Each release gets better! I have been using it consistenly now since I installed it and it has proven rock solid. In my 1.8 install not a single crash.
I have another feature suggestion: Make the smelter accept both the input and the catalyst from a hopper or hopper with a chest on top of it.
If you want to pipe/hopper gravel into the smelter, you'll need to pipe/hopper it in the side, not the top. I'll add gravel top support in the next release. Unfortunately, I'm still quite new to modding, particularly rendering, so I can't provide a full dynamic slot UI like Thermal Expansion or EnderIO do.

Just installed the mod to give it a go and noticed that when I was hitting stone with a flint axe, I received a message that I was using the wrong tool. The message then said that I needed to use a wood pick axe. Should that be changed to bone pick axe since there are no wooden tools in the mod?

Yep. That's because "WOOD" is the tier of pickaxe that flint and bone are at, which is what is necessary for the mod. I was planning on having localization support for that section of the mod, but sending chat messages to the user with localization support turns out the crash dedicated servers. For now it's hardcoded to en-US. Because no localization support like this was ever planned for 1.7.10, it is correctly implemented there. I will fix this in the next version.
Been using this mod for a few days now, and I'm loving it! But I've come across a few bugs while I've been playing. The only other mods installed are Optifine and More Player Models.
1) Twine, string, etc. can NOT be used in place of leather strips while crafting. This is my biggest issue so far. It more or less forces me to make a cow farm, or if I'm not near cows when I spawn, I'm screwed. I like the idea of hostile mob drops that you can get anywhere (like string/silk from spiders) being used as a less efficient alternative to passive mob drops, which you can't get just anywhere. I can't even remember how many times I could find a single sheep for beds in a game. Sometimes, I'd just end up making a bed out of spider string. Same deal with cows, sometimes you just can't find them. Even worse, shearing sheep lets you get wool without killing them, but you have to kill cows to get leather, thus making it harder each and every time to get leather, forcing players to build a cow farm.
2) Campfires don't seem to work. I've put coal into the campfire, and tried using both a fire bow and flint & steel on it, but it just wouldn't light. I went through eight or so fire bows before giving up. I went through ten uses of my flint and steel, too. Am I missing something?
3) Using a knife to turn leather into strips, string into twine, etc. uses up the knife entirely when doing so from the double crafting bench, rather than from your inventory. Instead of just taking a chunk of durability, the knife is used up completely. Not much else to say.
There's also a suggestion I have regarding campfires. I'd love to use them as lighting, like in a fireplace, but you have to constantly refuel them. Maybe crafting, say, a campfire with blaze powder or netherrack creates a campfire that never goes out? Campfires lose their use well before you get access to the Nether, but you could always make these everburning campfires not be able to cook food. Then again, that brings up the problem of being able to tell apart everburning campfires and normal campfires at a glance without making it jarringly obvious. Maybe put a small block of netherrack in the middle of the campfire sticks?
Anyway, again, just want to tell you how much fun I've been having with this mod. c: I absolutely love it, and it works well, despite being a WIP. The lack of an early game has been a big problem for me with Minecraft, and all other mods that claim to fix it stray a bit too far from Minecraft's original feel for my liking. This mod is the perfect solution, and I await every update with baited breath.

This is a planned feature for tools. It is already in place for the next release, in a config option that will default to true. However, I will not be adding this feature for armor, as only leather strips would be strong enough to hold them together. If you need armor and are down on leather, I suggest you search for rabbits, you can use their hide to make leather. In a future release I will be adding a mob transport item much like the Safari Net from MFR or the Golden Lasso from ExtraUtils.
Campfires only accept wood-based fuels. Coal and charcoal won't work. Don't forget that you also need to place your item to be cooked in the upper slot before you light the fire.
Well that's an interesting bug. Since all of my testing of the knife crafting recipes were in the 2x2 inventory crafting grid, I have never encountered this. I will look into it. Does this occur with the single workbench (BB, not vanilla)? Also, which version of the mod are you using, 1.8 or 1.7.10? Odds are, this is probably happening in both versions, but that info might help narrow it down.

1) That's reassuring. Still a bit bummed that leather is still mandatory for armor, but I suppose it makes sense, and I won't need nearly as much leather.
2) Ah, well, I think I just screwed up. I was thinking of it more like a light source than a furnace.
3) I haven't tried the single workbench, as I usually craft both my workbenches at the same time. I was using 1.8 at the time, but I just switched to 1.7 for completely unrelated reasons. Once I get the game up and running, I'll test it.

Some thoughts on the mod after some additional time with it.
1. Would it be possible to add a flint spear weapon? The recipe could be 2 sticks, twine and a piece of flint. This could be the early weapon. It could have 2 to 4 uses before breaking, but would be relatively cheap to make.
2. Add an item called firewood. Firewood would be used in the campfire and would burn similar to coal. it could be made from 4 sticks. The longer burn time would eliminate the need to constantly feed fuel to the camp fire.
3. To make the camp fire more useful, move all meat based recipes to it. All other food recipes would be handled by the brick oven. Remove the ability to cook meat in the kiln as that would be nasty.
4. I don't recall seeing an early game shovel tool. We have the flint knife for crafting, the flint axe for wood chopping, the bone pickaxe for early mining, but nothing for dirt, gravel and sand? I'll look again tonight as I was only using my hands to dig dirt, so i could be mistaken here.
5. If leather is an issue, simply move it back and make it a requirement for the better tools. If this were done, then the early tools would need to wear out a bit faster to prevent them from being overpowered.
6. Is thread a requirement for leather armor? If not, I would add it to give thread another use. It could also be a requirement for the bed as well.
7. Change the kiln recipe to require 3 cobblestone slabs like the brick oven does with the clay bricks. The smelter could require 3 stone slabs as well. This will make your recipes consistent and give an additional use for the slabs. The advanced versions should use the appropriate slabs as well.
8. Add iron nuggets as a requirement for doors. They would be the "hinges".

That's all I have for now. Keep up the good work.
1. I think this might be a good addition, serving as a replacement for the Wood Sword.
2. Perhaps, but it should burn only half as long as coal, and only be usable in the Campfire, for balance.
3. The meat recipes for the campfire result in Charred Meat, which is supposed to be disgusting. However, with the right tools (a rotisserie or a pan), you can properly cook meat 'over' the campfire (rather than 'in' it).
4. You don't really need an early-game alternative to a shovel. Shovels are for being efficient in breaking soft materials, but efficiency is a luxury a starting player cannot afford.
5. This is a config option, or will be one in the next version (I've already coded it in).
6. Not specifically thread, any string will work I think. I like the bed idea.
7. The kiln recipe was intended to replace the vanilla furnace recipe. I think I recently changed the smelter recipe to use stone brick slabs where you said.
8. For wood doors, leather strips to hold them in place should be enough, since iron doors already require hinges. I want the player to be able to make doors without having to go mining for iron, giving them time to set up a farm and other things. I could make iron hinges for wood doors a config option though, if you want it to be tougher.
1. I think this might be a good addition, serving as a replacement for the Wood Sword. Cool, hope it makes it into the mod.
2. Perhaps, but it should burn only half as long as coal, and only be usable in the Campfire, for balance. My intent was just that. A campfire only type of fuel. Good catch.
3. The meat recipes for the campfire result in Charred Meat, which is supposed to be disgusting. However, with the right tools (a rotisserie or a pan), you can properly cook meat 'over' the campfire (rather than 'in' it). I was making the assumption that one would need some sort of rotisserie to properly cook meat. A revised campfire model with a rotisserie could be used or you could simply have the player make a "spit" and pretend that it will allow the meat to be cooked properly.
4. You don't really need an early-game alternative to a shovel. Shovels are for being efficient in breaking soft materials, but efficiency is a luxury a starting player cannot afford. I am a bit confused here. We have an early game axe and pickaxe which allow us to chop and mine, but no "tool' for digging dirt and sand? I feel like I am missing something here as having some sort of crude digging instrument seems like a natural fit for your mod. Perhaps a wooden digging tool might be considered. It's efficiency could be right between digging by hand and the wooden shovel. See the attached recipe below.
5. This is a config option, or will be one in the next version (I've already coded it in).
This will be a much added feature, because the cow leather drop seems really really low at the moment or I am getting some seriously bad RNG rolls.
6. Not specifically thread, any string will work I think. I like the bed idea.
Cool. Hope you implement it.
7. The kiln recipe was intended to replace the vanilla furnace recipe. I think I recently changed the smelter recipe to use stone brick slabs where you said.
Thanks for making the requested change.

I forgot about the iron doors. Leather will work just fine in this case.

Started using your mod, and I'm really enjoying it! It actually adds some effort to early gameplay (which is obviously the point), but you've used a method that isn't too overbearing, and nice to get into, unlike some others I've tried.
I have a question about the campfire, though. I'm using 1.8 and every time I light it, it takes two durability from the firebow (maybe firestarter is a better name to avoid weapon confusion?) or two durability from flint and steel. I was just wondering if that was intended? Since the firebow only has 8 durability, that means it's gone after only 4 uses.
As an aside, because I'm using mineralogy and craft++ in addition to your mod, the starting game is actually even harder for me, as stone doesn't occur naturally anymore (I have to combine one of the new stones with gravel to get cobblestone), dirt falls like sand (no more easy dirt hole house), and stone tools use smooth stone instead of cobblestone. Altogether it's making the early game challenging and fun again!
One more question, will you be implementing a way to have other mod tools also require leather strips, or other catalysts, etc? Like, look for the term "pickaxe" and require x amount of leather strips, for example.

3. Again, there is a pan and "spit" (now called rotisserie) in the mod, that allows for these.
5. The reason for the lack of any bottom-tier shovel is for two reasons. First, the cost of a very early-game shovel far outweighs any slight bonus in speed it provides. For this reason I never find myself building wooden shovels in vanilla. Once you have stone, you can have a shovel that is fairly cheap and provides a decent bonus to to digging. Second, you simply won't be digging a whole lot in the early game; you'll be looking for food, gravel, and ways to beat your first skeleton. If you are at the point within the game where you have a need for a shovel for a lot of digging, you probably have access to stone.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your new releases!
I've done quite a bit of testing with the campfire, and I've never encountered that bug. Is there another mod that's trying to look for Flint & Steel uses?
I have plans for modpack makers to be able to add their own recipes to BB.
Is this compatible with general mods? Like through progression with tech and magic mods, will it work out? I love the concept of this and would love it to use with other mods.

Yes it is. It works with pretty much all Forge mods, but some extra compatibility features are still on the way for the upcoming 1.0 version.

I also noticed that some tools like the drill from IC2 Classic do not seem to mine right, and if you disable the Better Beginnings block breaking module, the crash no longer happens but the quarry and the tools from some mods drop nothing when used on most ore like blocks and stone.
I'll guess it occurs on a dedicated server, but it's not clear whether this happens on single-player. As this isn't the first bug report like this, I think I'll have to redo all my block-breaking code yet again.

This was in single player. I hope its not to much work for you to fix, its a really cool mod, I love the idea of a mod that makes the start of minecraft a little more then punch a tree, win the game xD
Just a few ideas that I thought of and I feel would fit in your mod:

Thinking about learning to code and then making this an add-on if that's okay. My main question is: Would you be okay with me making an addon?
I go by AquaBuzzardHR on my YouTube Channel. Link here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyrxj072mhHlrhiv6RoZcWw
It is a channel about building and being creative, currently playing on the Lake Laogai SMP.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to your new releases!
I've done quite a bit of testing with the campfire, and I've never encountered that bug. Is there another mod that's trying to look for Flint & Steel uses?
I have plans for modpack makers to be able to add their own recipes to BB.
Fair enough regarding the digging tool. I missed the rotisserie
Is this compatible with general mods? Like through progression with tech and magic mods, will it work out? I love the concept of this and would love it to use with other mods.
Yes it is. It works with pretty much all Forge mods, but some extra compatibility features are still on the way for the upcoming 1.0 version.
Planning on installing this after school
