is donating specifically towards tall worlds development an option? I would hate to see such an amazing project die.
Sure. I'd totally work on Tall Worlds full time if I could raise enough money to cover my living expenses. As things are now though, I need to spend my time doing other things to keep from getting evicted.
Financial support for full-time work on Tall Worlds ends up being quite a lot of money, so it hasn't happened via the usual donation channels yet. =P Short of some kind of corporate sponsorship, there's no reason why all the money has to come from one place though. If the costs were split over a big group of people (say 1000 or so), it would only cost each person about $5/mo.
On the other hand, how does someone even get a corporate sponsorship kind of deal for modding? I've never heard of anyone doing that before. I'd be curious if anyone had any ideas on how to make that happen.
I have gotten some commissions to work on the mod for a few hours here and there though. Small contract-type work doesn't guarantee that the whole project will get into a working state any time soon, but it does tick the progress bar a bit. So that's also an option.
This project, regardless of Cuchaz's involvement, certainly won't die if there is a somewhat persistent effort among even just a handful of modders working on this on their spare time. The only way this will die is if people just plain forget about it and the Minecraft modding community dies down, which won't happen anytime soon. There will always be people who will play the game and wonder if anyone has tried mucking around with world-height, and this mod will likely come up in any search on the matter. It may hibernate for a while, but it won't die.
Anyway, perhaps what would help is if Cuchaz or, perhaps more appropriately given Cuchaz has his attentions elsewhere, some other intrepid modder(s) began compiling a list of major and minor fixes that need to occur, and eventually develop a rough roadmap of what it would take to get the mod fully(or mostly) functional.
Then this could be posted on an independent thread on this forum and the forum on Cuchaz's site so that people can organize their thoughts and efforts and jump on board, as well as update the list and roadmap as bugs/problems get fixed and/or discovered! In this way it could become an active project with a chance of success. It would also make the task seem much less overwhelming.
Although Tall Worlds is ambitious, there is ample precedent demonstrating such an ambitious project could indeed be successful through contributions made by the online community. OpenXcom is a stellar example of this.
And short of raising enough money to allow me to keep working on the project (and keep the lights on at the same time), you can try to find people willing to donate code instead of money. Everything's open source and permissively licensed, so fork away. The trouble is, there aren't many people out there with the programming experience necessary for this kind of project. Those that do have that kind of experience tend to have cushy high-paying jobs already and not a whole lot of free time. =(
I think everybody should (if possible, and if it is legal) put a banner on your signature saying 'Support Cuchaz creating mods on Patreon'.
You might receive a bit more money. =)
I hope.
If you create such a banner, I could put it on mine, that's the least I can do (I have no income yet).

Way to go getting in the news on the forum for your Ships mod, Cuchaz! Hopefully this will draw a bit of attention to your other mods such as this one!!!

It's certainly legal, and I'd welcome the advertisement. I know many players appreciate my mods, but don't have any money to donate. That's all fine of course. My mods are free.
But if players want to help find those who do have money to donate, that's another way you can help me out. =)

Maybe if I have some time today I'll create a banner or something.
For now, I have math waiting on the to-do list. Haha.

So even though this would create more of a cubical, or spherical render distance around you, shadows will still appear in that distance even if the blocks causing those shadows could be thousands of blocks high? Thats a pain in the neck, maybe something can be changed with shadows and sunlight?
Btw, this would be really cool if it were compatible with tools like worldpainter or terraincontrol.

please read what other people are saying. cuchaz does not have the time to work on this anymore and its been asked too much about world edit or any other mod..

I fully understand what is going on with this mod. I was simply making a statement

It's intentional to preserve how light currently works in Minecraft. This way you can know something is above you. Ignoring it would have been easier, but is bad if you have stuff like really tall caves in your world. (Sun goes on, sun goes off.)

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
well this feels dead.. welp. people its time to give up hope. the years of waiting for a playable version of this have been wasted. we must look twords other things since this has turned out to be a fruitless venture. This will either be remembered as a failure throughout the modding community or forgotten to the sands of time.
-It may even be time to lock the thread since there is nothing left but error reports that will go unsolved.

The M3L CubicChunks implementation will probably never be updated, but the mod isn't dead. Some time ago I forked this project and ported it to Forge 1.8. I already got everything that worked with M3L working with forge, but it's still nowhere near beta release.
I'm currently stuck on solving lighting issues (again, there were some mistakes in Cuchaz's implementation). My source code is available here

Now please don't expect any of this to be speedy but I'm looking into the issues regarding multiplayer in M3L and afterwards plan on building a script to transform existing worlds (definitely only vanilla at first) into unbound/cubic chunk worlds as an interface to allow existing biome generators to work in the cubic scheme (simply generating within the existing bounds, and placing air and lava above and below being respectively).
Background, so I came to the forums with a mod idea I wanted to implement that requires cubic chunks and lo and behold someone has already tackled that challenge! =) So far I have everything building and am working through the source code as well as this thread. The latter has proven significantly more dense than I initially thought. I expected the forum to be mostly feature requests, update announcements, and people asking for ETAs but unexpectedly the devs seem to have used the forums for technical discussions as well which have been absolute gems.
So I don't have my PhD yet (just finished my masters), have never worked on minecraft before (code is code right?), and somehow unwittingly picked one of the more technically daunting minecraft mods to take up maintenance on (should be fun) - let's see how this goes!

Thank you so much but one question will this work with World Edit?
Nope. It literally works with nothing. Not any one other thing.

I tried this and I had only 3fps when I usually have 140, So, how do I get It higher?
Tried it? What Minecraft version?
I tried playing with this mod installed, but nothing shows up when I click 'Play' on the Minecraft launcher. What am I doing wrong?
Say a prayer for all the REQs who still remember...
