We are thing of the same comment, and from what I see, Not a "Beta", but a "One of a kind weird terrain beta" I would love the terrain the pics showed
That would be more of an "Alpha" release, at least in terms of Minecraft versioning. It's interesting to think that Minecraft's only true alpha stage was the very first days of coding the physics, which can be seen in the video of the infinite cobblestone caves on Minecraft's home page.
will the cubic chunks with nothing but air in them be loaded? the reason I'm asking is it seems a bit ridiculous to load empty chunks.
Yes, cubes that are all air are loaded in our new engine. Don't worry though, we've added plenty of optimizations to make this an essentially free operation.

Hello. Is there a excepted date for the public beta? Based off of the recent updates and visual progress of the mod, I'd say it's almost ready for that. However, there could be a lot more "under the hood" work that needs to be done first that I obviously wouldn't be aware of.

This would all be a whole lot better if Mojang actually implemented this into Vanilla Minecraft.

Paper is there for words to be written on it. Rules are there to be broken. Laws are there to be followed....to the letter of course! Please help my dragons!
Here's a related question I have: Does Minecraft at the present moment mark individual sub-chunks that are empty as "empty" when loading a chunk, or does it load the full 16x16x256 volume unless that's completely empty?

if the colors in my posts don't make sense don't worry about it

correct me if im wrong.
Sub-chunks don't exist in default minecraft, cubic-chunks adds the "sub-chunks" that is what makes it work! So yes it loads everything unless it is compleatly empty, which isent possible in a default world (any one noticed how much less laggy skyblocks is? Thats what cubic chunks will do!

At current, Minecraft can actually process "sub-chunks." Because of how the anvil format works, chunks are divided into 16x16x16 cubes. However, the game processes and stores chunks in their entirety for most calculations. The only situation in which the cubic format come into play are when they are made completely of air, at which point the game flags the area as "empty" for future lighting updates and such.
The most notable way to see these sub-chunks at play visually is to build a large object up to the build limit. The bottom (or closest area to you) will load first, and areas further up or down the object will load later. There is an Obsidian tower on a certain server I play on that takes several minutes to load from bottom to top due to its sheer size.

I don't do release dates for my hobby projects. I can't accurately predict when they'll be done because I can't work on them at a constant rate. You'll just have to be patient. =)
We're working on world generation right now. When that's done, we'll be closer to a beta release. Then, there are several under-the-hood things that need to happen, particularly with the new mod loader.

Vanilla Minecraft does have a concept of "sub-chunks." Empty "sub-chunks" (ie, all air) are not loaded or processed.
Regarding empty chunks, if you create a Void world (Superflat preset 2;0;0, or 3;minecraft:air;0 in 14w21b; note that it automatically appends ;village but using 0 (ocean) prevents them from generating) you'll end up with several megabytes of region files, comparable to a normal world - despite there being nothing at all in the world; in other words, the game actually DOES save empty chunks, or something; if I compress a file it compresses to around 2% of its initial size, far less than a normal region file:
(it is also odd that the files are as large as they are because the game already compresses data; the average chunk is around 3-4 KB in size, less than the uncompressed size of a single chunk section/cubic chunk, which has 4 KB of block data alone, as seen here).

Chunks that are completely air aren't even loaded in Vanilla. It would be rather pointless to implement an inefficient behavior for no good reason.
I've never heard of a chunk in vanilla that's all air. xD
Not a regular survival world but it counts.

Not to mention that after anvil update, the game skips calculations on large regions of air.
I believe in the Invisible Pink Unicorn, bless her Invisible Pinkness.
Ah, good point, thanks.

Maybe it would. I don't think they'll do it though. Thankfully for everyone, they don't have to.

But... The End is more or less Skyblock.
So it is actually also in regular survival worlds. Kinda.
There are definitely a lot of empty chunks in there
Well, as has been stated above, sub-chunks that are empty will not be loaded, so there's that.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
