By chrome he meant metallic, nothing to do with shaders. And even though its liquid at room temp, i think the should be an armour and tool set, since it is metal. If you smelt a bucket of mercury it would give you an ingot of mercury.

I think freezing it would work better
As for a real use, (Other than armor and tools, we don't need more of those) how about for growing zether plants? As a replacement for growing them in soil near water, soil near mercury
I really like the concept of this. Just promise you wont go adding crazy things like a new menu screen, party systems, or something like that. In my opinion, that's what kinda ruined the aether mod.
Don't think so. If we add it, it will be toggleable.I have a great idea for mercury. If someone falls in it, their screen will turn a transparent gray color, and it damages them like wither. So it is more severe than wither.

Heating liquid brings it closer to its BP which would probably mean it turns into gas and you get nothing.
I'd say mix it with some packed ice from the new 1.7.2 biomes but I just realised this is 1.6.4
When I say shaders I mean like water shaders, as chrome reflects all types of light and can form images which we see on its surface.
Shaders are however pretty intense on the systems.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.
This topic is getting nothing but support. In the suggestions, no topics ever get support, just hate.
Another idea. A very small biome that is made of a different kind of grass that restores health when stepped on and destroys monsters, and a village spawns here.
It would be called the purified zone, and this would be a rare biome.
keep in mind one of my ideas actually did get support.
What if you put the bucket of mercury in a crafting table with snow blocks to get the ingot? What if it "slowly" looses durability as long as it is in your inventory, becoming a "melted mercury ingot", or if you made a sword it would be melting mercury sword, etc. The tools/armour would be very good until it melts. You can either put hardened or melted mercury items into a furnace to get back the bucket of mercury, or put the item into the crafting table with snow balls or blocks. Blocks restore all durability, while snowballs only restore it somewhat.
My idea is that the fast melting time is made up for by the performance of the tools and armour. Maybe sword gives enemies wither, but only lasts for, say, 10 hits before it has to be restored. Maybe wearing any "melted mercury armour" will give you poison affect, and full set gives you wither.
I really don't like the usage of mercury as tools in general, considering that yes it is a fluid, but it would need to be very cold to stay in a solid state for long periods of time, and minecraft's ice is only around 32 degrees Fahrenheit; which wouldn't keep it cold for very long. Even if you do say "well this is minecraft, realism doesn't matter" Realism does matter to some players, or at least a little bit of it. Mercury seems more like the thing as fuel for a new machine block or ammunition for a type of cannon that can fire various fluids, and imposing their effects upon the hit target. It also being dangerous to be around/in is a valid suggestion.
And besides, the Zether already has its tool sets, and so many mods add various tool sets, we really don't need more tools. While you say that they decrease in capability the more they're used and for the longer they're used, it just seems tedious, dangerous for the player, and decreases the want for the player to use them.
Well in that case, in what way would it be used as a fuel? If you want to talk about the 'realism', liquid mercury itself would have to be heated as it is liquid at ROOM TEMPERATURE. And many people like new armour/tools/ores. And as you even mentioned, there are entire mods devoted to them! And you're worried about the, what, 3 sets this mod adds? And by the way, if i know anything from real life, hills of solid snow and ice are probably a bit colder than exactly the freezing point, don't you think?
Oh I have an idea. Maybe you can use mercury to make a block that is an alternative to a redstone lamp.
A cheaper version of a redstone lamp.
That works.
As for why it could be used as fuel? Chemical reactions can change things quite a bit. I like a slight realism in my minecraft, but i'll use those magic mods, as most of them are good. And wouldn't and iron-mercury alloy still be liquid? Also, yes there are full mods devoted to more tool sets, but usually they don't get very far, or there is a specific reason as to why that tool set is added. DRPG for example has a ridiculous number of tool sets, but those tool sets offer certain buffs that aren't available otherwise. Like the angelic set that provides flight, or the dravite set which add a small fortune effect. Metallurgy 3 also adds insane amounts of ore and tools, but most aren't nearly as strong as iron, and to get ones as strong/stronger than diamond, you need to do a lot of mining and alloy working; which is what the mod is about. From what you said mercury tools and armor would only be buffed for at max 75-100 uses before starting to hurt or bother the player, making them somewhat useless or pointless when a player could just wear diamond or Zether platinum. As for hills of solid ice, yes they're frozen nearly all year long, but only keep themselves cold mostly due to the ocean and lack of sunlight. And its only around (from what I know) -50, -60 ish degrees at night. The Zether seems like a painfully hot and humid place, ice serves no place here, and the mercury (if frozen) would melt somewhat fast, or break simply by being hit with a nice warm sword or arrow, and getting some (if talking realism) into the player's blood stream, slowly killing them. In my mind mercury tools were ruled out from the beginning, but you are welcome to your ideas/opinions. I personally don't want to see mercury tools, furnace fuel or cannon fodder I like, along with it being dangerous for the player to be around/submerged in.

Hm, perhaps it could be used as fuel in some sort of furnace like block?
Or used as ammo for a certain type of ranged weapon?
It would look like gold but just have a silver color
