To give a quick overview of the base mod, the Familiar API allows you to add a little follower to the game. The idea is to make single player more fun and less lonely by adding a companion that can't die on you, but each familiar also give you certain powers and perks. Some of them, particularly the more powerful ones, require experience levels to unlock. They are not mobs, they are more like a summoned pet. They cannot be targeted or interacted with, thus they cannot be attacked or ridden.
This thread is for an add-on pack to that mod containing characters from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Current Pre-Release(v0.5)
Contains all of the Mane 6 pets plus Philomeena and a non-canon familiar for Princess Luna, a bat named Zeustella based on the spectacled flying fox (google it, they're adorable). Remember to install Pitman-87's familiar API first according to his instructions, this pack won't work without it. To install this pack, just copy the zip file into your mods folder or drag the files from the zip into your minecraft jar. Screenshots:
Angel
As seen from first person.
And here he is from third person, note the particles from the potion effect.
v0.5 - Shrank the familiars by about half, making them larger than in first releases by a small measure. Added Zeustella. Gave Philomeena and Zeustella potion effects. Added optional class files to change potion and particle colors, instructions are in the readme.
v0.4 - Fixed issue with fall damage from Angel's jump height, made familiars render larger, added Philomeena.
v0.3 - Made the powers of all familiars stronger, added Owloysius, Tank, and Winona.
v0.2 - Revised Angel's powers, added Gummy and Opal.
v0.1r1 - Fixed bug where higher jump causes fall damage when you land.
v0.1 - Initial pre-release with Angel.
Current Familiars and Their Powers
These are the ones I'm currently working on adding. The item that unlocks them is supposed to relate to the character they belong to in some way, see spoiler for the logic. An important note about this is you have to pick the item up off the ground, crafting it or using an inventory editor don't work. You have to make the item (or give it to yourself), drop it, then pick it up. After you have picked up the item, you can spend the experience to unlock it. Each familiar adds a potion effect from the game, but the ones used by Philomeena and Zeustella don't currently do anything but spawn particles. I tried to match effects to familiars as best I could, see logic below. The pets for the princesses are the only ones with attacks, and they also have increased brightness that makes them more visible in the dark. Don't ask about making them give off light, I can't do it the way the game is coded right now. People who do ask will be ignored or laughed at for not reading the OP.
Angel Bunny (Fluttershy) Higher jump (you can get to the top of 4 full blocks). Fluttershy can't fly too well, but she can at least get that extra height.
Unlocked by picking up mushroom soup and one XP level. Soup makes everyone feel better.
Gummy (Pinkie Pie) Underwater breathing. Okay, Pinkie can't breathe underwater, but nothing else really seemed to fit. Unlocked by picking up a cookie and one XP level. Pinkie loves sweets!
Opalescence (Rarity) Increased melee attack power (in my testing zombies are one-hit kills on all difficulties). Sort of a punny way of commenting on how she attacks her orders. Unlocked by picking up shears and one XP level. Shears are the tool for cutting wool in game, what better for the fashionista's pet?
Owloysius (Twilight Sparkle) Reduces all incoming damage (reduces damage by at least half a heart).Twilight's spells are a good defense. Unlocked by picking up a book. Because Twilight couldn't live without them.
Philomeena (Princess Celestia) Small fireball attack (note this is the fire attack Blazes use, not Ghasts) and replenishes your health (heals you to full health whenever you take damage). Phoenixes self-renew and defend themselves with fire attacks. Unlocked by picking up a compass and five XP levels. Because Princess Celestia guides all Equestria.
Tank (Rainbow Dash) Increased movement speed (walking and sprinting).C'mon, it's Rainbow Dash! Unlocked by picking up an arrow and one XP level. Because Minecraft doesn't have speeding bullets.
Winona (Applejack) Tools swing faster and blocks break more easily. Because you can always count on Applejack to get it done fast. Unlocked by picking up a golden apple and one XP level. Because red apples would be too easy.
Zeustella (best I could come up with for Luna since owls were taken) Lightning attack and replenishes your hunger. Lightning is great for Nightmare Night pranks, and the candy is great for filling your hunger. Unlocked by picking up a clock and five XP levels. The clock is so she knows when the night starts.
Suggestions are welcome and will be credited if they are used, but please keep them reasonable. I'm new to modding so a lot of the more complicated stuff is beyond me right now.
Potion Files
Included in the zip file is a folder containing class files. These class files change the colors of the potion liquids and the particles they generate when active. They are ENTIRELY OPTIONAL and WILL CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER MOD THAT EDITS THESE CLASSES. To install them, pick the one you want and rename it aad.class and put it in your minecraft jar. INSTALL ONLY ONE, trying to install more than one will cause conflicts. The file has to be renamed in order to work, so just dragging the one you want into the jar without renaming it won't do anything. Again, they change the colors of the particles AND the potions, so keep that in mind. These instructions are also included in a readme txt in the zip. If you post to the forum about getting crashes caused by not following the above instructions, I will laugh at you and tell you to read the instructions. Looks nice! I think for getting the familiars, you should have to get certain achievements first. Maybe it's tied into Minecraft's achievements, or you create achievements for the mod. Then after you meet the requirements for a familiar, it will then spawn somewhere (not that far away from where you would be currently).
Edit: I just noticed the thing about experience xD
Yeah, the more powerful the familiar is the more experience levels you need to unlock it. At least one will be available from the beginning, but most will need to be unlocked. Keep in mind I'm not making the mod itself, this is an add-on for an existing mod that is mad to accept new packs like this one.

The main mod itself has regular vanilla-based mobs as familiars, so that may be more up your alley. Someone else has also done a familiar pack that adds elemental dragons (linked on the main mod's page). As I'm doing the MLP familiars, I'm also working on adding a bat (a cute one, not dark), a tree frog, and maybe a snake if I can get poison attacks to work. Those will be separate from the MLP familiars so if you don't want those you don't have to have them. I'm also considering doing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the four turtles plus Splinter) but that will be after I get this done.
You don't need XP only, you can unlock them everything, if you get achievemnts or picup items, whatever.
Honestly, I prefer the experience system as right now it's easy for me to mess with. Eventually, I may have them unlocked with achievements or pick-up items (like a baby ender dragon you get for picking up an ender dragon egg) but it's going to be a bit before I'm skilled enough with coding to do that.
You're right, I do not have to. But I want to, I kinda like the MLP:FIM show and I will be looking forward to this release. =)
I like the idea I do hope to see your TMNT Familiar's soon~ It be nice if we can see Some Final Fantasy Summons as Familiars, only their attacks are colosall and high damaging, they come around for a short time and have a cool down till used agained. course it would cost absurd amount of exp just to unlock one.
Maybe summons from FFx or From FF12 like Belias. But thats off topic. Moving on
Anyway I suggested those as is, is cause that is how I see them to be honest.

The unfortunate part is that I'm not a very good coder, I'm pretty much learning as I go here so a lot of the really cool stuff is beyond me at the moment. I really like your ideas though, so once I get better at this I'll certainly give it a shot. After I get the MLP and TMNT familiars done, I might try to make mini-FF summons. The only two FF games I really know well are VII and VIII, so they'd probably come first. Of course, there's always chocobos and moogles as options to start with. Speaking of chocobos, if you like FF you might want to check out Chococraft. This mod adds tamable and breedable chocobos to the game. Yes, they come in different colors, and yes the different colors have different (and very appropriate) abilities.

Hehe. Ill try it sometime, And well, as for your learning. Take your time.
People these days expect people to hurry while recieving the same quality, only to have it come out poorly and in huge quantities. Even if its just a simple mod to alot of people, its a fine work of art to the creator, and takes time to perfect.
Cant make a diamond just by swinging the carver at it wildly. takes patience, experience and time~
So perfect your coding, perfect your art. I am in no hurry and I am patient. If it never comes to fruition, then thats what I got to deal with =)

In other news, here's a status update:
- Angel Bunny is done, but as the only testing I've done has been in MCP in just the src folder the texture doesn't work. I will post pics once I have him testing in the regular client. His texture sucks, but that's mostly due to the fact I made his model so small it's hard to do a decent texture. If people don't like it I may scale him up but, well, he's a bunny. I felt he was supposed to be small. I may scale him up anyway so I can do an alternative version as well. (google search "mlp cartman angel bunny" to see what I have in mind, it's the first pic that comes up)
- Elizabeak is almost done. I still need to do the texture and get the physical attack to work, but I may skip that for now. The physical attack is proving more challenging than I had anticipated. Most of the mobs just use an AI for it and it won't work for the familiars (unless I'm doing it wrong, which is very possible). I'm not giving up on it, I'm just moving on for the time being so I can get the rest done.
- I've got the code for Gummy's powers done, just need to make his model and texture. Depending on how difficult his regular model is, I may do a couple other versions with him wearing a party hat or the tux and monocle.
Depending on what other powers I can manage to get to work, Cartman Angel Bunny and Posh and/or Party Gummy may be separate familiars from the regular versions. They'd have extra powers and be harder to unlock (sort of like the post-burn version of Philomeena). I may make how they're unlocked a secret that you have to discover for yourself.

Yes, I like bats. No, I'm not emo. And I don't like vampires (except Nikola Tesla). I just like bats.
It's not possible to make a physical attack like zombies, because they deal damage to the player when they collide with them, but the familiars don't collide with other entities ( I disabled it because of glitching).
To solve it, just deal them damage like your bat, just without a projectile. For example an IronGolem threw up mobs while colliding, but my familiargolem just threw them up if they are in range.
Texture:
You can double the size of the texture and you are able to add more details. But just do it with ImageEditor (e.g. Gimp) and not with techne (it just resize the texture so you have more space for the textureoffset and you can add more model-boxes).
There are several ways to see a texture while you are coding with eclipse.
Put your texture in bin/minecraft-folder or eclipse-folder or into the minecraft.jar inside the jars/bin-folder or in your original minecraft.jar.
Hope it helps
Actually, I was looking at using the cactus code applied to the player while the familiar is active, but that works too.

Status Update
- Angel Bunny, Gummy, and Elizabeak are done as far as coding is concerned. I've run into an issue with the models for Angel and Gummy as I made them too small. When I tried to get pics of them in game they were really hard to see. This shouldn't be a major delay as all I have to do is scale the models up then tweak the textures I have done to fit the new maps. I should still be able to make my goal of a weekend release since I'm using the wolf and ocelot models for Winona and Opal respectively, which makes their textures a simple recolor of the defaults. Tank's model is pretty straight-forward, as is Owloysius'. Their textures might be slightly more time-consuming to get the details right but not terribly so.
I would like to know what people think of having two versions of some familiars. The way I anticipate this working is that they would have a basic version that would be unlocked using experience levels, plus a second version. The alternative would have a secret unlock using something other than experience (using googie214's idea of achievements or item pick-ups), a different appearance, and either have an extra ability or it's abilities would be made stronger. Here are some examples:
Angel Bunny
Movement speed would be slightly increased at all times in addition to other powers; would be dressed as Cartman from South Park
Gummy
Unlimited air rather than just extended; would be wearing a party hat or in posh outfit
Opal
Physical attack would do more damage; would be wearing the sweater from "Sisterhooves Social"
Owloysius
More orbs per kill; might have him wearing a wizard hat and/or carrying a scroll, scroll would probably be easier.
Tank
Would add no fall damage: would have propeller and goggles.
Winona
Might give her some sort of knockback "herding" ability; not sure what to do about her appearance, might give her a cowboy hat.
While I am planning/working on other creatures from the show, my focus is on the Mane 6 pets since they tend to show up more. This means that a lot of the other familiars may not have alternative versions, but with the Mane 6 pets there's enough fan art and cameo appearances to give me more to go on.

Well... I do like the idea. Pet's that have a stronger form from being unlocked? Or one that may have a different behavior? Hm... Thats does seem nice but it would be best to make them separate summons for some types, but I think that actually works. Perhaps enemies that get to close when Tank is equipped causes them to suddenly slow down? Just a thought.

Otherwise im rooting you on, Ms. Rain ^^
That's actually the idea. Both versions would be entirely separate. The more basic version would be easier to unlock and you'll be told in the guide how it is unlocked. The alternative with better abilities and special appearance will be unlocked through getting an achievement (one of the vanilla ones, I don't plan to add any) or picking up certain items, but you won't know which achievement or item you need to get to unlock each one. I figure that way it's more of a challenge to get the better ones while still allowing you to have the basic versions until you get the better ones. I don't know though. It may end up being that I tell you which achievements/items you need to get but have them be harder to get (like picking up a certain number of diamonds to unlock the alternative Opal, or a large number of apples to get the alt Winona)

Ah, Then it will work. Perhaps Philomena should get a 3rd form that will spontaneously set foes on fire?
Perhaps Winowa has another form that increases the pickup range of items, orbs etc? So you can procure them from further away?
Not sure if I could manage the pick-up thing any time soon, but I'll keep it in mind when I get the stuff I'm working on done. As for a third form for Philomeena, I'm not sure if I would do that. What I could do instead is add Peewee, Spike's phoenix hatchling from the episode "Dragon Quest".

2). I am going to try this mod. Im no brony buts definitely alot better when what we have today...
Im hoping for more Familiar's, since people have not made summons without rather dark or excessive conditions. Heh.
No worries, been there, done that.
If it never comes to fruition, then thats what I got to deal with =)
I still cheer you on my friend.
Thanks for the support, it is much appreciated.
Actually, I was looking at using the cactus code applied to the player while the familiar is active, but that works too.
Ooooo~
Im cheering you the whole way, Mr. Rain ^^
Um, dude, it's Ms. Rain. But thanks
Ah, My apologies M'lady~ ^^
You're welcome~
Very possible, I'll add it to the list.
What I could do instead is add Peewee, Spike's phoenix hatchling from the episode "Dragon Quest".
...You know. Its too bad there isnt a way for a Familiar to actually teleport you by mouse point, rather then the familiar Herobrine with the ability to Teleport without damage by using a Endermen Pearl.
