Wherever you spawn, you spawn with your crashed ship. In this particular scenario, the player crash landed in a mountainous region filled with strange trees.
And this is you. Welcome to a hostile alien world :]
Yep, you're screwed.
Did some editing here to show what kind of possible landscapes there might be. I wish there was an easier way to edit maps; these overhanging plateaus are supposed to be huge. But this is good enough.

The world might possibly be more foggy to give it a spore-like atmosphere. Never mind those weird artifacts on the trees, I couldn't get rid of them.
At night, the flora glows. The weird thing is that these blocks are not torches or glowstones. They seem to glow no matter what.
Some more strange plants and a closer look at the overhang plateaus.
More flora.
In deep caverns and ravines, there are all sorts of strange flora that live off the heat from lava. They are vital for crafting. Though they are common, many more will be extremely rare subterranean plants.
In a later part of the mod, you will discover these rare ravines inhabited by a bacteria that slowly eats stone and forms these large spherical dwellings from their excretions. They glow neon green and are often a wonder to behold. These bacterias also make their home inside holes in stone, where you can extract them. They are a rare but vital resource for advanced weaponry.
Unfortunately, they are high up.
Lastly, you may or may never encounter these extremely rare plants that live in small aquifers deep underground. Often, they are accompanied by a small colony of the neon bacteria.
Bestiary Concepts

Stalker: The stalker mob is a small reptilian creature that is silent until it attacks. It stalks its prey silently and then strikes quickly. It has 6 spherical eyes and has a bioluminescent mouth that aides in dissolving food. Stalkers are uncommon low-level mobs.
Stone Crawler: Stone crawlers are small arthropods that feed off the nutrients from stone. They are neutral creatures, but will scurry if attacked.
Seeker: The seeker mob is a large reptile that is constantly searching for food. They do not stand idle, or rest; they are constantly on the move. They are mid-level mobs that have a strong attack.
Devourer: Devourers are large beasts that do not have any bioluminescent characteristics. They wander in the night, and devour whatever prey they find. Their large and gruesome claws are fearsome and powerful. One swipe can kill an unprepared player. They are mid-high level mobs.
Strider: Striders are large peaceful creatures that graze on tall trees and berry vines on the sides of cliffs. The small figure next to it is to show the scale between the player and the Strider. They are hard to kill and will stomp back after a few hits.
Mine Bulb: This small plant will explode if their needles are touched. They like to grow in dark shade or underneath larger plants. They camouflage with shrubs and grass.
Needler: The Needler is a hostile plant that will shoot needles if you get too close. They are a valuable plant for crafting purposes.
Fume Sprout: The Fume Sprout plant appears harmless and rather pretty with its glowing petals, but it releases a disorienting gas that spreads about 2-3 blocks away. Walking into the almost invisible gas will disorient you-not good if there are creatures chasing you. The shell-root of the sprout is rather valuable as a crafting item.
These are a few concepts for mobs. More will come soon.

We are looking for mob coding and animating. We are also looking for 3 Testers. Tester applicants, please fill out your info, and simply write TESTER in the Resume section. Please Apply below:
We have quite a large team that is working very hard on the mod. We do not really need any more people with the exception of a mob coder/animator. Think you are talented? Then apply, and we'll review you.
About Using My Creature Concepts and Ideas for Your Mod
I've been asked whether modders can use my concepts for their own mods, and so I think it's important to make it clear on my permissions about my work. Otherworld is probably going to be developed into an actual indie game (therefore becoming intellectual property), and then I will resume the Otherworld mod based on the game. The concepts for the mod will be developed and used for the actual game, so unfortunately, I give permission to anyone to use my concepts or ideas for their mods.
I do suggest, however, to go to www.cghub.com and explore a lot of the cool concept art there, and form some ideas from people's sketches and concepts. Don't copy the concepts because then that is plagiarism, but you can take bits and pieces from various different concepts to form a new concept. I highly encourage everyone to do that, instead of copying or incorporating other's concepts. Trust me, people will appreciate a mod more when a modder designs or formulates their own concepts, rather than taking other's concepts.
In short: I do not give permission for anyone to use my concepts or ideas for their mods, because Otherworld might become an actual intellectual property in the near future.
Christianity in a nutshell: We have all sinned, so we deserve eternity in hell. But God (God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit) loved us so much he sent His Son to die for us, to take the punishment meant for us. All we need to do is accept it, and we have heaven headed our way.
Sure MrJudo, go right ahead! If you need any of the textures I can provide them. I'll probably make a few designs for creatures later on when I get settled over the summer.
Unofficially, you may work on the mod, but until I find a coding director, this mod will stay in pre-production. Then I will officially cast the team.
Sweet, i'm working on the dimension right now, i got one mob already. Started yesterday in case u said yes. Btw i could use any help i can get this will take a while.
Awesome! What kind of help do you need? I unfortunately do not know how to code or write script. I can do textures and ideas and world creation stuff like what I did in the images.
Now that I've played the newest snapshot, I think you might want to wait to start coding. The SP is identical to a server, the only difference being you're the only one on. That's seriously the only difference. This probably has messed up a lot of code, and 1.3 may change everything code wise....

Forgive me, but I'm not sure what you meant by "played the newest snapshot". I figured you probably wrote your post for another thread but wrote it here accidentally.
EDIT: wait never mind I forgot about the snapshots! I know what you mean now.
I'm sorry to crush you're dreams guys, but to make the mod for 1.2.5 and then have 1.3 come out the next day wouldn't be fun.

Um, no not that I know of. I may or may not have be too stoked over MCX360 to remember even there was a release date.....
But yes, we should think over the content. Let's start with entering the otherworld. How could we get there? A portal just seems rather odd if we arrive in a spaceship. I think a 'space elevator' to a space station above our planet where our spaceship awaits might be good.

I think a space station is an interesting idea. It can act like a hub that you can explore; within the station is the "air lock" to the rocket. But this air lock is technically the portal, just that it doesn't appear like a portal. It looks like a lit air lock or docking tube.
Or perhaps you can enter in your spacecraft from the space station, and in order to enter Otherworld, one must "sit" on the captain's chair. When you step over the chair(which is the portal), you are taken to Otherworld. Here's two concepts I quickly made up for a spaceship chair. the blue "cushion" is the portal. It doesn't have to be blue, it's blue so it's easier to see.
From there, it would be assumed that we crashed. Perhaps during the loading screen it would say something like "Jumping to X planet " or "Arriving at X in a few seconds". Once you spawn on Otherworld, the screen darkens and text appears explaining that you just awoke from a crash landing, and it appears you are the only survivor (sort of like how Tale of Kingdoms mod begins when you spawn). Along with the text is a button saying "Explore", or "Okay" so you can move on.
The only way to initiate the quest is to explore the crash landing for a some sort of communications device where you are contacted by your superior. I was thinking that instead of a superior, you are contacted with some AI but that sounds too Halo-ish.
I like the airlock idea better. I was actually thinking of the space elevator being the portal itself, but the airlock does sound easier. I think that 'Jumping to planet X' 'Arriving at planet X' should be followed by 'Jump succesful. Running diagnostics....' *loading bar* 'Main generator damaged. Attempting damage assessment...' *loading bar* 'Red alert! Engines: Offline. Shielding: Offline.' and then the letters before ':Offline' start bugging out randomly, and the loading finishes and the explosion sound plays, spawning the player in the wreck of their spaceship. Which, in my opinion, should be one of several templates so the crash site isn't always the same.

Yes, that sounds good. Yea the wreck itself won't always be the same looking craft, and it can spawn in a different biome. I will be adding these details to the first post. I'm gonna start playing around with airlock designs and possibly what the space station and elevator will look like.
The only problem I see is where will the space station be? In the overworld? The sky will be blue and it won't appear to be in space. The only remedy to that is if the space elevator only works at night, so when you get to the station high above it's black and there's stars. The other option would be having the station above the Otherworld, but then the player won't experience the loading screen thing.
As for the space elevator; it will require some hefty crafting. For example: you will have to craft the base flooring of the elevator, the elevator controls, maybe some sort of small engine, etc. Finally, you gather all those pieces and craft the elevator. But, you cannot ride up if you are not suited up. You must also craft a space helmet, an oxygen tank suit, leggings, and boots that are fit for space traveling.
Hmmmmm.... *lightbulb* We're already making one dimension.... why can't we make two and give the station a world to itself?
I think the elevator only working at night would be a good idea, but I have a sneaking suspicion that there isn't a 'Night' variable in the MC code. Maybe we could use light level instead?
And yes, I do think the space elevator should require some major effort. Wait..... how about a teleporter instead, Star Trek style? "Beam me up Scotty!" We could use a portal, maybe made of a new block crafted with iron blocks, obsidian, and some redstone?
