You are so right, mods are not build with public servers in mind. It wasn't even until minecraft 1.3 that it was required some form of muiltiplayer support, and a large portion of the mods are only SMP because it has to be. And a side affect of this is that a lot of the mods don't even take into account the possibility of it running on a server. I have at least tried to make this mod so that it would work better on servers, so when a player goes offline his dragon goes with him to keep down random killing of his dragon when hes gone, Also to keep from having 40 dragons sitting around wasting server power while there riders are offline. While this is a great idea it still needs work because its brought a ton of bugs.
Brilliant. I'm sure many people are so thankful that their dragons are safe when they are off-line. Me personally, as long as they can defend themselves I wouldn't care. It would just require players to be cleaver about dragon parking. Though I plan on using (the bukkit plugin) GriefPrevention to protect give players a form of land, but it also protects any non-hostile mobs.
Correct me if im wrong but Forge doesn't have a Permission systems(built in) like bukkit, and not many people are that interested in creating one for a handful of Servers that might run the mod. Ill write more later but i have to go to class right now.
Your right, standard Forge doesn't have permission's built in, but MCPC+ is a Forge/Bukkit hybrid (made by one of Mo'Creature's developers), so it has permission support. I've been using it and imagine it is as close as we have to what the Pluggin API will be like.

Im not sure if grief prevention would protect your dragons, working between a bukkit plugin and mod is not a straight forward thing. Plus on basic forge servers bukkit plugins would not work so thats why i programed that peice. More so I don't claim support for MCPC+, While I could work perfectly fine I have not at this point tested with it. However I may do some testing on it when I can get a vanilla version that is stable. In any case I definitely will take into account a lot of things you brought up when starting the redesign of the code(should happen after next release).
Those of you looking for a protection system and trying to get away from bukkit and MCPC+ should check out Forge Essentials. I'm planning on running it on the server I'm getting going.
And its a great relief to hear I won't have to choose between this mod and everything else down the line!
For the record I'm all for adding lore, adventure, etc. Looking forward to seeing how this mod develops!
By the way, I haven't suggested this earlier because it kind of goes against the Eragon lore, but if your considering dropping the "official" Eragon link I might as well suggest it. Your dragon dies if you do... wouldn't the other way around also be fair? If your dragon dies so do you?

I love Grief Prevention it's so easy to use as a player or admin. Any non-hostile mob, even those from mods like Mo'creatures in a player's protected area is protected from other players and hostile mobs. I'm not sure how much you have diverged from Dragon Mount, but I know my dragons from Dragon Mount are, as I've tested it using MCPC+ on my test/playground server I'm using to set things up for the final release.
As for MCPC+, you shouldn't have too much issue with the mod being run on it, as it is Forge, but with Bukkit (well Spigot really) peppered in. I have yet to run into a problem with a mod when running it, plugins, on the other hand, are a different story, but those are few and far between. Like I've said my only problem getting set up is that mods aren't built like plugins so admins have to either take them as is or be really sneaky about how to implement them and fit the their server. As an example, anyone can tame a raccoon in Mo'Creatures, so I'm using a plugin that can restrict players from right clicking one with food. It was a pain-in-the-backside, but I got it working. It's fine and dandy for me, I'm willing to go that extra step to customize my server, but as things move forward with Mojang's API (if/when it comes out) I hope mods will move more closer to plugins with servers in mind (like with your de-spawning of off-line player's dragons). But as the saying goes, 'wish for the best, and prepare for the worst.'
Alright, so the team and I got to some talking today about something major and that will definitely change the mod's future and possibilities going forward. However, before doing this, I want your guys' opinions. If you like the idea, say so. We'll do it then. If not, say so. Things will stay as they are.
We want to change the mod. We want to entirely drop the Eragon theme.
Here's why.
As it is now, the theme of Shur'tugal very severely restricts us in what we can/can't add. As it is right now, we're already breaking lore enough as it is. We had to institute the statement that our story takes place hundreds of years after the Inheritance Series just so we can implement the dragon temples and have it be okay.
If we drop the theme of Eragon, but keep our main theme (Dragons, dragons, exploration, and more dragons) we can pull off some really great content we wouldn't have been able to otherwise. If we keep Eragon, there will eventually be a point to where the mod is done, we can add nothing more, and that's because of how limited we are.
If we become an independent mod, we can do whatever we want. We can add what we want, and we can do a lot more. The next few planned updates will stay exactly what they were intended to be. They will be about Magic, Dragons, and Civilizations, but none will be about Eragon's universe. We'll still throw in nods and references here and there, but they won't be "canon." Just fun little references. However, once these major updates are out, we can continue with many, many more updates to come.
However, this is all up to you guys. We do not make this mod FOR you, we make it WITH you.
Will I be disappointed if you say you want to keep the Eragon theme? Yes.
Will I be disappointed if you want to get rid of it? Yes.
We the team have talked this over for a majority of the day, and the idea has been going around in my head for awhile. It wasn't until one of our coders brought this up to me that I actually decided to talk to the team about it, and we're okay with changing it. We're okay with not changing it. That's why we're bringing this to you.
A simple yes or no will do, HOWEVER, I would like a nice, thought out argument that supports your thought. That will give me a consensus of what you guys really feel more than a bunch of one word responses.

I don't know how many of you are actually die hard Eragon fans, but I am one. I honestly believe that this is the right idea, just don't change the name. I love the name. Change everything else and all that, but don't change the name. I loved it when I would go on my Minecraft and go down my mods list and see "Shurtugal Mod". So I am all for dropping the theme, but if the name goes as well, then don't drop the theme. I know this sounds like a petty reason, but it's my reason. Lol . Feedback is welcome.

The Shur'tugal Mod sounds a lot better than The Dragon Rider Mod

That's the thing though. I love the name too. I believe it was either Celicam or I who picked it when the mod first started.... But if we keep it, then that will bring people here thinking "Oh, is this an Eragon mod? Oh. No. No it isn't. It just has dragons. Disappointed face."
So a rename is likely, but I promise we're going to be creative and not just call it the Dragon Rider Mod.
So, I think the general consensus is that we are all for change? Very well then.

As long as its pronounceable I'm good with it. Easy to remember is good too.

From the perspective of someone who's only seen the movie I don't see any problem with keeping the name Shur'tugal.
Was that name used in the books or something? I don't remember it from the movie?
Shur'tugal means "Dragon Rider" in the ancient language. It has been used in the books in several places. The movie was a poor representation of the actual story. They didn't even get most of the personalities right.
Hmmm. Well I guess that's a good point about the name being tied to Eragon then. Personally I like the "sound" of the name. And you have some name recognition for it already. But I see Taklok's point about possible disappointment. Mmmm. Decisions decisions...

Aren't decisions just so much fun? It doesn't matter much to me about the name, but I have grown on to 'Shur'tugal'. I think I will keep calling it The Shur'tugal Mod between myself and I for awhile to come.
a long as theres elvesand magicare the dragon hearts going to give you extra magic in this?you hould either be able to eat the heart or have them in your inventory to get the more magic
I think it would be pretty hard to eat a dragons heart that is made out of a substance that is most likely harder than diamond
Actually, quite to the contrary, the books describe them as glass-like and frigile. There are also a few instances mentioned in which they are shattered easily on the ground...

Shur'tugal is "Dragon Rider" in the Ancient Language which is the language of magic in the books, So Shur'tugal is pretty tied to Eragon.
