could you make the dragon partially transparent when your crosshair is on it, and more and moreso when you look more and more down, to make landing on a helipad-type thing a little bit easier.
You can look down:
A: You see the helipad: You are not directly over it
B: You don't see the helipad: You are directly over it
FOV on max helps as it gives you 160° view field or so
I have another suggestion, it'd be a small touch, but I think it would be really neat if, after dismounting your dragon, the dragon would do different idle animations periodically (like sitting down, stretching, yawning, etc) and then would eventually lay down and sleep until you come back and wake him/her up. It's just a few simple touches that adds a LOT of realism to the mod as a whole, and it'd be really cool.
Alternately, if you're unwilling to take the time of adding the extra animations, I personally am quite good at animation and would do it for you; all you'd need to do is add the script to randomize the animations and space them out, and have him sleep after x number of ticks.
I'll send a PM (if new users are allowed to?) to discuss this further.
Could you possibly post a picture showing the way you have the enderdragon texture organized compared to the Minecraft texture? Something like this, maybe:
After much research, I present a set of templates for skinning mobs. I was doing research on these for creating papercraft generators. I realized that these would be helpful making skins for texture packs. I have the same information in PHP files too, if anybody wants them.
Since I have not updated some of the older mobs, here is my test texture pack with all of the mobs and most of the items in the items directory as PDN files. I think some of the skins are only partially showing (like not all cubes of the golem are visible because I was checking on a couple of stray sections that the skin file has, but are not used.) At least that has all of the files in one nice zip file.
Pigman, Pig zombie and Zombie all follow the standard character template.
Ghast_fire is just the ghast template when the ghast is firing.
Spider_eyes is an overlay onto the spider template when spiders are hostile. It glows when spiders are hostile. It is also applied to the cave spiders.
Saddle is just the pig template the saddle surrounds the entire pig. Alas, including a set of reigns will not help control them.
Villager skins are in the villager folder with different professions as file names.
For those looking to change the armor in their texture packs, the armor skin basics are covered by the various character templates. I recommend SkinEdit. Or if you want a really fancy skin editor.
The helmet is the head and hat sections of the template in the "1" files.
The tunic is the torso and arm sections of the "1" files.
The pants are the leg and torso sections of the "2" files.
The boots are the leg section of the "1" files.
Notes:
The helmet box is slightly larger than the hat box on the character.
The helmet's hat box is slightly larger than that, it surrounds the normal helmet box.
The tunic's torso and arm boxes are slightly larger than the body torso and arm boxes.
The boots' boxes are slightly larger than the leg boxes
EDIT 2011-01-15: Added Charlotte and Squid (maintained alphabetical order.) EDIT 2011-04-06: Added Wolf (maintained alphabetical order.) Also 640x320 templates for SkinEdit here, 1280x640 templates here and PHP data here. EDIT 2011-09-12: Added Enderman and Silverfish. EDIT 2011-09-16: Added notes on armor files. EDIT 2011-09-24: Added Villager. EDIT 2011-09-25: Added Lava. Added link to Villager PDN file for Paint.net. EDIT 2011-09-27: Added Fire. Added a few other notes. Topic moved from Modding Discussion to Texture Discussion (Thanks to the moderators.) EDIT 2011-10-17: Added Enderdragon. EDIT 2011-11-20: Added more notes on the Enderdragon parts (in the spoiler.) EDIT 2012-02-27: Added Ocelot and Iron Golem.
The templates follow the same naming convention, 640 is 10 times skin actual resolution, 1280 is 20 times. The neck and tail use the same textures (Spine Segment and Spine Plate.) They are rotated for the tail, the left sides of the boxes become the right sides of the boxes on the tail and the fronts of the boxes become the backs of the boxes for the tail.
The body is made up of animated fire until it uses its 3 shots then it is smoke until it recharges. Has head and 12 "rods" orbiting it, 2 groups of 4 in an upper orbit and 1 group of 4 in a lower orbit.
The body is made up of "slice" boxes. The slices overlap in the texture file, the bottom texture of the bottom slice is mostly made of the left side of the texture, the top texture of the bottom slice is mostly made up of the front texture.

You could open the PSD file in the source code package if you have Photoshop, I organized most layers by their associated body part.
ugh, i realized a LONG time ago that asking for so many things at once is a bad idea. People asking for coloured dragons, Why doesn't barracuda just make a red dragon mod? A mod that adds the red dragons that notch was gong to add. Its quite easy, the code is all there, Just make the model ender dragon like, make it walk and fly and be hostile on its own and voila.

I see, the Eragon front is becoming bigger and bigger.
erm the new model in 0.7.1 i think thats the version the dragon looks more fat than on 0.70 can you undo that and also add the animations taht the guy said then this will be perfect!

I attempted to use one of the dragon skins from Painterly as my dragon skin...
and got this. What have I done wrong, and can someone help me?
This dragon and the Enderdragon do not have the same models, so if you want to change this dragon's skin, you'll have to make it yourself unfortunately.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the tip. Can anyone who is good with pixels make the Eldritch abomination I have created less Eldritch-y? I am awful at image editing.

Put it into the mob folder in the minecraft.jar
Hope you like it! :>
That's really nice! I could combine it with another red skin for the red dragons that someone else send me some time ago.

I have Gimp, soooo....
