If someone made a cracked copy of the game compatible with Futurecraft, I don't think there's a lot we could do to stop them. I'm not sure how much emphasis we will want to put into security. I certainly have no experience with it.

I would blast the crap outta any cracked player I come across if they breach the Futurecraft security
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.
That would work great! Until they use their hacked assault ship to destroy you. I think the Universe Administrators should have the ability to spawn ships (not God-mode) to police servers.
Maybe a special copy of Futurecraft for devs to spawn blocks, spawn ships, and have god mode. The best way to police the Universeand to create an all superior dictatorship that rules all of the galaxy, *trollface*
Oh we'll probably have access to some pretty sweet stuff (officially for bug and balance testing, but doesn't stop us from taking it for a joy ride now and then). But it will most likely be done with direct access to the ship database, which we can manipulate more readily and is more secure.

Cool, cool, But first everyone should be worrying about when this mod is going to be finished. Speaking of special copies for devs and people, how might one get one of these? =3

being awesome?
Also, what are your plans for the ultimate Futurecraft server? The galaxy will just be one big server wont it?
Ive been watching this thread since november and ive gotta say that this mod looks like itll be the best mod since the aether. Keep up the good work yall. And if yall need help with anything I can help :biggrin.gif:

By knowing the correct string of alphanumeric characters which, when passed through a salted md5 hashing algorithm produces a very specific string of bytes corresponding to a value stored on a secure server. Obviously.
A single server? No. One persistent universe? Yes.
Which is not to say there cannot be other universes. Just that there will be an official one which 3rd party servers will link to.
Yes, but how does this universe exist? It either has to be stored in bits on all the servers of futurecraft (taking up a lot of space). Or you can have it on mega server which is the main universe.
We won't know how expensive it will be to run a server instance until we do it, but my feeling is a single server wouldn't cut it. The universe itself will consist of multiple servers, some owned by us, some donated, some rented out.
I've considered archiving solar systems to be used by other servers, but I don't have plans for developing it yet. That will be pursued only as the need presents itself.

OH ****, I nearly dropped chips on my laptop. Never eat chips by laptop :sad.gif:

I am at a loss here. I thought the Universe didn't require space as a server (or group) but each server that has Futurecraft will run its planet, the rest of its solar system, and the space within it.
Space can be considered a world like any other. Just one that consists entirely of Copernicus entities and has no chunk-based grid. The space server would, besides keeping track of everything in space, simulate the subworlds of whatever ships and other space objects happen to be in the region. Even with a lot of ships, it should be cheaper than a planet in both memory consumption and calculations per tick.
It's unfortunate that the term "server" has multiple meanings, as it confuses the discussion. So when I try to talk about it, I'll try to specify either a server machine or a server instance, the former being the server hardware itself and the latter being an instance of minecraft_server.jar. One instance can run one planet or one star system (excluding planets). A single machine can run multiple instances, and it is likely this configuration will be the norm for all but the highest-population areas.
I am expecting with all the freedom of movement, most star systems will have relatively low resident populations. That could change depending on how many servers are in the galaxy, how we deal with trade, and how worlds are utilized by players.

This mod becomes more MMO-like by the day. It's starting to remind me of Planetside.
That is of course if you will be able to code a persistent world consisting of multiple servers.
Just makes this mod all the more incredible and innovative.
The plan for it to be MMO-like has been around for some time. We just don't talk about it much outside of our own forums (first post). I looked up a little about Planetside. Some of the similarities are uncanny. We might want to borrow some of its game mechanics.
No, it is not out yet. And it probably shall not be released in full for quite a while.
However, I am pretty sure that one of the mod developers said that there may soon be an early alpha version.
And when there is, my server will crush the others like a bug!!!!!!!

I'll teach those 6 year old's a lesson!
