Maybe there could be a machine that automatically places blocks in a straight line between two points (providing you have supplied it with the desired materials). For example if there is a large flat area on a ship you are building you could use the machine to fill the area with the desired blocks, and then go and add the aesthetic touches after it has finished.
I was thinking something like buildcraft schematics but with a holographic preview and the ability to move the structure around before placing it, then having it assembled by robot arms or lasers or something. At least for the guts of the ship.

I want to join:
My IGN is minecraft_nick.
reason 1:Can I build ships and redstone stuff if theres redstone but I will build ships and I want to do textures as-well.
reason 2:Im building a adventure map actually two adventure maps now and Im pretty good at building as well.
reason 3:I can start now but not the school days but that dosent mean I can work at the hoildays.
reason 4:I want to do the ships and textures, I have paint.net to do the textures.
also my age if you want it. My age is 10

With the size of survival ships anyway, there won't be much work in constructing it, the hardest part will be mining it. And besides, there will be too many flying cubes anyway. I like it when people try to put curves in their ships.
It comes to mind that in terrain generation, you should make the hull material as rare as diamond, but found in batches of 100+ so that when you do find it, there could be a sudden wave construction of the ship, rather than a few blocks at a time. This would help decrease boredom. If you could process those materials further, it would be very good for making ships.
For instance. You find a huge batch of Crocite (I know it won't be in the final game), you can use an Iron ore processor to double it, gold processor to triple, diamond to quadruple, etc. This method would allow players to build large ships without having to spend too much time mining a world.

The server is open to most people as I haven't seen anyone specifically turned down if they asked. (some have been ignored however)
On the server, there are a few people who use redstone, but not many and the server is around building ships. You can build redstone, but be careful about building on land, as there is a constant need for more space for the ships, and we clear land regularly.
Although, the modding team doesn't need anyone besides programmers (if that) Mackeroth is doing textures and they have all of the other bases covered.
You are still free to submit textures, but you should ask for which things need texturing otherwise your work will be in vain.
Sounds awesome. Inter-server travel would be amazing.
I really think that for inter-server travel you should use a portal however. You go into space, and you need to build a large portal up there before you can travel to other servers. If the server you travel to has no portal, a rift in space or something is created for 10 min (meaning if you take more then 10 min to complete what you're doing, you're stuck (unless you die, then you'd respawn in the server containing your bed/spawn point)).
Rather then being "in space", I think you should just be very high above the clouds. That way you can still see the ground rather then having to create something to represent the planet.
For the portal you enter the coordinates of the server you're traveling to (you just enter the IP address :tongue.gif:).
Something like that. But I really think portals/wormholes(/Stargates :tongue.gif:) would work a lot better then physically traveling to the server and then having some sort of thing to represent it in space.
Man it's been a while since I checked this thread.... I also wish to join this "Server" as it's called. IGN is Fenwaydraven. I don't see why I shouldn't be here... I need my own personal dreadnought too!
Um, Yes! If I may post some ideas:
Idea #1: Corvettes, ships that are about the size of dropships, can do hyperspace. They would not hold troops, but they would have better weapon stats.
Idea#2: carriers, about the size of assault ships, but carry a lot of flying attack robots and fighters. Could possibly hold troops.
Idea#3: Artillary cruisers, large ships that cannot hold troops but can fire at longer range than the assault ships
Idea#4: constructers and space stations, you can guess what these are, likely with a way to dock with them.
Idea#5: autopilot, let's you have an armada with not as many people as ships
Idea#6: other planets, likely without aliens but with a possibly alien vessels, both evil and benign
Idea#7: constructible ship weapons, ones that are too big to be crafted, like a railgun, or tesla caster
Idea#8: space mines, guess what these do. :tongue.gif:
Idea#9: explosions of all kinds should do vehicle damage, like ghasts, creepers, and TNT.
Idea#10: Handheld rocket launcher, meant to destroy ships.
Idea#11: asteroids, and mining stations, to get precious resources
Idea#12: shipyards, to make and repair ships in space. 'nuff said
Idea#13: space tugboats, to move stations and shipyards out to space.

First Thoughts:
Idea 1: Ship Classes have been decided on (check the OP) and nearly all ships will be able to transfer between servers if they have the right engine
Idea 2: There will be ships that can land, and there will be fighters, however the dropship and carrier probably won't be the same ship.
Idea 3: Battleships are a given, but there probably won't be a limit on what type of a ship it can be other then the size. There will be plenty of Star Destroyer type ships that are both battleships, troop transports, and carriers
Idea 4: Constructors probably won't be necessary, and space stations will be as simple as building a large ship without engines designed to stay in one place
Idea 5: while not a feature to be part of the mod for a while because of its complexity, would be interesting for NPC's to command smaller ships, but this is supposed to be a multiplayer mod with singleplayer. NPC's have been discussed as being crewmen, but no one has suggested that they fly for us. Other players could fill roles as pilots.
Idea 6: Other planets to travel to while being on the same server is a possibility, but it is mainly discussed as being a feature mainly for the singleplayer version where the player could still travel without having to be with other people.
Idea 7: While a possiblity, the first weapons will surely be crafted rather than built because of difficulty to program an entity for a turret out of blocks on an entity (ship) Still a cool idea for later versions as it will allow players to customize the turrets to match their ship.
Idea 8: Ship weapons haven't been discussed extensively yet, but they would be a cool addition for smaller ships to use and they would be easy to program (just take a missile and get rid of the propulsion) They would however only be effective against large ships which will take a while to build on any survival server.
Idea 9: That is a given
Idea 10: There is already a weapon like that, but it is more of an anti-vehicle gun look for the bolter near the bottom of the OP at least it used to create an explosion where it was shooting at. It may have changed since then. However I think that infantry should not be able to take out ships (at least large ones) alone and should require some sort of AD turret to take out larger ships.
Idea 11: I like this Idea because it keeps higher tier materials in later game while still keeping them plentiful for ships.
Idea 12: A structure for construction and repair isn't necessary won't look cool, but might be a cool way to limit ship development into tiers by requiring ships to be built in a shipyard and the shipyard would require certain materials to be built.
Idea 13: Unnecessary; anything in space that needed to be moved would either have a pair of engines, or could be jurry rigged to have engines. having a ship designated to moving immobile ships would be unnecessary.
Overall: you have some good Ideas, and others that could be clarified by reading the OP and other forums.
my minecraft world is gonna get moab, fleet assaulted and colonized by the first person to show up on my door step thanx to this mod and the worst part is i wont care as long as i can get this mod! This the most creative and innovative mod I have ever seen I wish you the best of luck in this and hope you don't get stuck in development hell again. Also I saw another future craft mod but it is about farming or something
I was thinking something like buildcraft schematics but with a holographic preview and the ability to move the structure around before placing it, then having it assembled by robot arms or lasers or something. At least for the guts of the ship.
I originally though of something similar, but I forgot to consider instant mining blocks (hologram blocks) for the design. Kudos for improving on my suggestion. :smile.gif:
Also, why have my posts about being white listed been ignored?
Oh dear, another one. There is also a texture pack called futurecraft. That's what happens when you have such a generic name. In any case, we don't really have a better claim to the title as the other guy actually has deliverables. In any case, not worth worrying about just yet.

Umm.... About that...
I may have worried...
Also, thanks for those people who provided me with pictures from the server. I see a few excellent ships, some good ones, and unfortunately; a lot of not-so-good ones.
Starrider, what you said in response to I'm-just-a-random-person was, well, I couldn't of said it better myself.
Wow, we really have been getting a lot of posts lately: this morning we didn't have a page 16, know we're half way through it...
