What's the point of adding something that already exists, but in a different colour? If someone wanted a red pickaxe, couldn't they just alter the image within the default texture pack...?

Well I suppose if it's your first mod, and you're practising programming skills, then yeah, go for it. And after I posted, I did realise that redstone is a lot more common than diamond, so yes it would be more useful.
