I get to test coz I gave him ideas for blocks and items. I am what we call a contributor. Although he is letting anyone test I think so this is pointless...

You... you really tweeted this to Jeb?
(OT) Man I wish I was in San Fransico... I want one of those Steve heads sooooooooooooo badly.
You do realize this isn't out yet? You pretty much just told Jeb exactly what I'm doing. That's all. He's not going to be able to come on and be like "Oh look, Minecraft Revamped source code! And it has everything that it says it has in one week!" Now I'll probably get a ton of spammers being like "Wher is da link? I wants to trie it out!"
So, don't go tweeting him until I actually have it working...
on the off chance that you complete this, then notch should hire you into mojang if that happens. ****, if you completed this, you would know about as much of the minecraft code as any of the guys working at mojang do, including notch.

For a second there i thought you bored me to death.
another idea why dont you make a half block for sand, grass, and dirt that generate with the map to make smother hills and sand dunes :biggrin.gif:
As nice as this would be, it would mean that those hills would be double the distance as normal hills of the same height would be.

Yeah, I've already thought of that. I doubt I would get hired, especially since I'm only 15, but you never know.
Understand that if you do not deliver, then you will be hated by everyone.
Of course, given that you said that you are 15, I think you actually will make it... because if you didn't, you wouldn't have said that.
But can we just have the vertical chunks and weather, and nothing else? I have this other hunger mod (Xie's Hunger Mod), and thirst really fails.
Oh, about continents: Someone said something about having the probability that the next chunk is continent should decrease? Wrong.
If you keep it the same, then there is probability 0 that a continent will extend to infinity. If the probability is the same, then the average size of the continent is 1/probOfCont. Similarily for Ocean.
This is also a bookmarking post.
PS. Do deliver. If you fail... I will send creepers. And Ghasts. And more creepers. And skeletons. And more creepers. And Ghasts. And more Ghasts. And some Spider Jockeys. And some more creepers. And creepers riding spiders. And angry Zombie Pigmen. And Pigmen. And Herobrine. And...
If you add in new mobs, be sure to add in Herobrine, as well as Giants and Dragons and such. Also, would the map generator generate floating islands in vertical chunks, or would it simply allow infinite vertical space and the vertical extension of mountains?
Floating islands would be cool, but they would pose a problem in that it would be hard to draw the shadows for them on chunks below.
If you are to implement gravity to affect all blocks, perhaps you could add in a block that floats (Floatstone?), and then have them be on the bottom of floating islands, so you can both implement gravity and have floating structures. As long as we're on the topic of moving blocks, how feasible do you think it would be to modify existing code to allow blocks to move in all three dimensions? If that were implemented along with gravity, there could be truly interesting outcomes, in the form of large(r) moving vehicles and retractable roofs. Have you read Phillip Reeve's Mortal Engines Chronicles? Giant moving cities in Minecraft would absolutely blow me away (and may earn you a job at Mojang).
Also, if there really are going to be massive mountains, giant forests and infinite vertical space, then there need to be more ways to travel through the air, as well as the addition of more flying mobs. I think Pterodactyls, Dragons and Pegasi would be epic! It shouldn't be too hard to code, as there already exists coding for flying mobs in Ghasts (and they probably have already been done before).
Furthermore, there would need to be more methods of attacking airborne enemies than just the current standard bow, perhaps a Crossbow, and throwing weapons(like knives and that thing that I can't name right now, it consists of two iron balls connected by a length of rope and is used to snare the legs of animals), as well as possibly siege weaponry for base defense.
All of this is moot, however, if you don't follow through, OP. The vertical map generator alone is going to be a major project, not to mention some of the other things you mentioned in your post. For some of this, you can incorporate existing mods, but the bulk will have to be done by you. If you can pull this off, you'll be a god amongst Minecraft fans.

The thing used to snare legs are called grapeshots, well the old ship combat one was. That one was used to destroy the masts.

I I am the darkest shadow, the brightest light, the most dangerous advesary and the best ally. Choose your words wisely, for they may be your last.
This sounds like its going to be awesome. I just started playing minecraft and i still almost cried. Anything you need help with i hope all of us supporters can supply you with. Ideas incoming. after this even the will
<33333 you.
Pffft, 5 to 9 hours a day? Unless you have summer school or a job, there's no excuse whatsoever for not going 12+ hours, considering an 8 hour sleep period in a 24 hour day (leaving 16 hours of awake-time, and cutting out a few of those for food, drink, restroom breaks, and showers).
I do commend the 2-4 hours a day on school days (I assume it's school, given that a summer break/vacation was implied), though.
Kid, I have to say that you have some SERIOUS guts announcing this massive project so ahead of time. A lot of people are saying it and I agree
The outcome of this mod will forever determine your credibility to Minecraft fans, you either complete even 50% of the mod and you will be forever praised as king of Minecraft modders AND could earn you a job at Mojang (Yes kid, I know you're 15, but it is very possible if you're as good as you say you are.)
However, fail to even finish the terrain generator and it's over. The fans will not be able to trust you if you announce another mod ahead of time and it would require a HUGE comeback in order to even be SLIGHTLY liked anymore.
HOWEVER! Just remember this one simple fact... there is no pressure. No pressure at all, let loose and do not get stressed. You have no set dead-line for this mod, just hope and speculation. Take your time and do not get frustrated. Everyone may be watching you, but it is out of both patience and curiosity.
I'll pray for you kid. Prove to these people that you are a modder that anybody can look at and say, "It may have looked like he promised too much, but he certainly delivered in every way."
But PLEASE don't promise what you can't deliver, if you want an example of somebody who has lost his credibility because of broken promises to his fans, look at Peter Molyneux, who at this point in his career, is SEVERELY hated because of the choices he went with for his games. He made them into HIS games, not OUR games, now think about that and remember, when you make something that you like, remember that if you are truly sure that people will like it, confirm it by asking questions and take criticism with respect.
I'm sorry, I might sound like I'm pandering now, so I hope you took my words to heart and maybe it helped you remember what being a true gamer is all about. I will bookmark this topic and continue to watch you.
But know this, if you do not deliver on this mod... I will understand and I will not be mad at you. Give them hell kid. Give them hell... no seriously, give them hell, I want the Nether to be useful, damn it! XD
My 2 cents on this, about floating island and possibilities an infinite vertical world open:
Since the vertically generated world will be infinite, could you add floating rare islands, somewhere very high in the sky, with rare stuff inside? Hard to find, hard to reach (could be 200-300+ block above sea level).
I also have a concern with the nether and underground stuff: will there be a limit in digging? if there won't be, what are you gonna take for reference for resources generations? (as of now, for exemple, diamond is generated in the 10 lowest levels above bedrock, but if in your mod there's no bedrock, what are you gonna do?) Will you revamp the nether as well? Since it's a cave a limited vertical generation seems appropriate, but what with the portal? I mean, if I go 2000+ blocks above ground, the game won't be able to teleport me in the Nether. At the very least, it will make the Nether inappropriate for fast vertical travel, and with an infinite vertical world, that's a huge loss in the new dimension this will give to the game.
Last thing, but I think you thought about this anyways: FLYING MOBS
Oxygen levels? As in, you can't stay in a cave deep down forever, since you would use up all the oxygen there. Unless you brought oxygen tanks :tongue.gif:. Same goes for being up to high in the sky.
Also, how long would you expect this to take?
