The pulsing-stone thing should require four diamond blocks, instead of four diamonds. That way it's really endgame.
Oh, and of course each time you collect an artifact the spawnrate of monsters should be increased.
(They should also be loaded in special dungeons, with multiple spawners.)
Um, no neither would be good, not all minecraftians are fighters, some are builders, and some are miners [hence the name MINEcraft...]
Ya, if ya play on anything other than peaceful, your bound to do SOME fighting, but forcing a player to do so would be wrong, Notch added peaceful, there was a reason for it, not everyone wants to fight, and notch made a way for the people who don't want to fight to still enjoy the game, i myself play on easy during building/mining, normal all other times, but that doesn't mean a different person, who loves to building and explore, would do the same. ya, maybe make collecting artifacts spawn more, or different creatures, but only if you not playing on peaceful (All ya would have to do is make them aggresive, and problem solved, they won't spawn on peaceful) and putting them in a double dungeon? i mean seriously, maybe have one creature spawn, a bit stronger than normal for SOME of the artifacts, ya i agree, those who like fighting should be able to fight, of course. eh, time to start decompiling ALL of the .classes, as i have no clue which one deals with map gen....
EDIT: But i DO agree with you completely on the four blocks of diamonds for the Artifact Radar Pulser-Thingy. [Maybe Artifact Pulsar?]
Okay i am going to update my previous post with the Artifact items, and ideas, anyone who likes this mod, let me know your opinion, as i will try to get a mod for this going, no promises, but i will try.

Did you even read the quote in the image he posted? He's aiming for something Nethack-esque, where actually beating the game is a long and difficult task that takes ages and is brutally difficult. Something very few people will accomplish.
(Also, it's pretty obvious monsters would still not spawn on Peaceful even after collecting 9 artifacts. You would be a pansy, though.)
Furthermore, why the hell would you not guard the artifact with a buttload of mobs?
I think rather than making the divining stone simply harder to make it should be turned into a sort of block that was not recoverable upon destruction (thus making it immovable).
You would have to place your divining stones in locations as you go searching and their pulse frequency could indicate how closely placed they are to an artifact in a sonar type way. You would then be more careful about constructing them and choosing good placement to help triangulate a local artifact.
As it is it's roughly as easy to make a divining stone as it is to make a pair of diamond boots. Once you had it you could just run around with it on your bar while looking for artifacts. The idea of making it a placeable block makes it a little more long-term of a quest AND solves the potential problem of making the recipe too difficult. If the recipe is too difficult the game becomes a grind while you search for 36 diamonds before you can even start looking for artifacts.
If it's a placeable block then you can start looking for the artifact while searching for more diamonds to make a new divining stone that will bring you closer to your artifact. Killing two bird with one stone helps keep the pacing up.

And it still will be long and hard, but it beating a game it never something that few people accomplish, great games are not so brutally hard that only a few manage to beat it, Minecraft is a sandbox, and should remain as such, Artifacts would just be 'final milestone' of sorts, something that is long, takes alot of effort, and would only be accomplished by those who actually in a sense 'beat the game' in the sense that they know how to find diamonds, they traversed the nether, and have at least fought mobs, but it shouldn't be something only fighters will be able to obtain, ya i agree there should be fighting involved in getting the artifacts, just not how you invision giant bosses, that are superior to all but the best, ya they should be hard, but the number of artifacts should be higher, you shouldn't have to get all of them, only a large number, and bosses although should appear in most, not all of them, please read my post on the previous page, and suggest some changes to it, that is what i am going to be going by when i figure out the .class that need to be altered/modified.
My main points: Yes, artifacts should be very hard to obtain, but no, they shouldn't so gruelingly hard that very few people, out of the millions of Minecraft players, every manage to obtain, maybe only 30%, heck, maybe even a bit less, but not in the 10's and 20's, nor even in the 100's, there should be multiple ways of getting the artifacts once you find them, maybe that boss is too hard, okay, find a way around the boss, get the artifact, and either take care of the boss later, now, or just leave it be. yes, there should be mob spawners in some of them, not all, and not when there is also a boss mob.
-Yes it should be long, but you shouldn't have to explore every inch of the map to find those last 1 or 2 artifacts, just to get a message saying you beat the game, in a sandbox, there is no 'end' yes, you may have retrieved all the artifacts, built a castle made of diamond blocks, killed thousands of mobs, ate so much roasted pork, your a medical miracle, ghasts have become your gunpowder farmers, the nether is your playground, but still, there is always something new you can do, always something else you can build, and always a new adventure once you hit 'new world' Sandbox games are not meant to have ends, they have endgame content for sure, but that is, in effect, just another option you give to the player, heck, some people may not even use the mod, doesn't mean they don't deserve to beat the game. my point is, yes it should be long and hard, but not to the point is is near impossible, i personally don't fight oftne, i am not even a good fighter in minecraft, personally, i think a gang of skeletons and spiders are harder then a gang of ghasts, but eh, you can reflect fireballs, but not arrows, and spiders are annoying as heck, not really hard, but mainly annoying when ya have arrows flying at ya, skeletons are pretty accurate... but now i am getting off post...

Well you could have the normal Divining Stone, that only pulses when you are within 2 chunks of an artifact, and a Divining totem, telling direction, and it may change color depending on distance, giving it more of a use as a tool for triangulating the position. Maybe, it would have a blue, green, or red arrow pointing the direction to the artifact, either north, south east or west, and the color would depend on distance, green would be within 16 blocks horizontal, blue would be in between 16 blocks, and 4 chunks, and red would be farther then 4 chunks away. and if it is a pulsing green, it means it is within 4 blocks horizontal. they would be noncollectable, require a lightstone block, 4 diamond blocks, and 2 obsidian, and 2 redstone. the divining stone may require 6 diamonds, 2 lightstone dust, and a obsidian block.
EDIT: My ideas are on page three, about halfway down.
Unlocking monsters/tech levels/crafting
It would also be interesting if each artifact unlocked something, like bosses starting to spawn during night, or more powerful monsters, perhaps ghasts in the normal world..
Each artifact could have the power to convert blocks into a new type of blocks, unlocking more crafting recipes or building materials. This way the artifact enhances your 'tech level' which makes them actually useful in a gameplay sense too..
This is a very good idea, tech levels is in my ideas near the end on page 3, along with a similar concept of the crafting, and i have been trying to think of a way to introduce other mobs that spawn, depending on the number of artifact you found, i am think maybe, when you enter into the artifact dungeon, as my ideas suggest, that it would count that artifact as 'found' even if you die trying to get it, you still found it. although with your idea of crafting monuments, although it does seem very intriguing, i am worried about the ease of coding it, and also, the vagueness of your suggestion, could you please expand on that idea?
Make it so that you would be able to make each of those armor pieces, so like you need 2 stickas and 3 artifacts for picaxe, 2 artifacts 1 stick for weapon, etc... make it possible to get all of the epic pieces besides just being able to make one in your world.

Not sure how to clarify what I mean with monuments..
You place an artifact somewhere outside, and "holographic blocks" appears in a certain shape around it, and you have to fill those "holoblocks" with actual blocks for the artifact to become active.
There would be pre-defined structures that are random for each artifact.
Where are these holographic blocks? near the artifact, above ground directly above the artifact? also, if it was implemented exactly how you said, then people would do this: find a holographic monument in the shape of a cross, it is 5 blocks long, 1 block wide, and 10 blocks high, they would build a wall 5x10x1, as in, they wouldn't build the cross, they would just fill every one of those blocks, and also every block under those blocks, at least that is what i would do, easy as pie. maybe make it so the shape/monument has to also be surrounded by air blocks? as in, nothing but the monument, no scaffolding remaining or anything....
I really like the idea presented in the first post. I don't like some of the ideas presented in the thread, though. Some of us mostly play on peaceful mode, and I think there should be a way for us to complete the game as well without having to fight some stupid ultra-boss with eye lasers and flying abilities and such. I like the idea of it being focused on exploration, as there needs to be more incentive to do that.
However, it would be better if there were some way to move your spawn point first. It's not as big a deal when playing on peaceful, but on any other mode it would suck to be all the way back at your original spawn point after dying, particularly when this focuses on exploration.
That is a amazing idea, i love it. I really wish knew how to code java and i would do this but i am still learning vb. This a good idea though, im bookmarking this

A diamond block, and a Notch block would have sufficed for a reward 0.o
Oh, and of course each time you collect an artifact the spawnrate of monsters should be increased.

Mod Archive
Hmm. Would it have to a consistent 15 chunks or could we add a randomizer that does one every 15-50 chunks?
I make the Artifact mod.

Heaven is not a place, or a time, it is perfection.
So, when YOU start touching perfection, you will start to emerge in heaven.
(please dont hurt MR.Creeper, he only wants t-SSSSS-boom! uhh...give you hugs!)
IM DECIETFUL!
Perfect idea!
The artifacts shouldn't just be that easy there should be a boss guarding them!
