We'll be adding little progress updates on the blog.
I might come back to this thread on occasion to answer a question or two, but mostly I will be focusing on the mod. I've made a few big key changes over the past few months, including one that I'm very happy about that gives me even more freedom to create more epic Temples to house Artifact Armor.
You may be pleased to see that I have updated the design document image, to include all of the features I had designed before Choam left.
-Kirb
Caveats to keep in mind:
-This is a very old thread, back in january when I posted my original image. The mod is significantly different, so if you really, really want to read the thread, I would just read the last 20 pages or so.
Artifact Orbs are now known as Keystones. This is to prevent confusion between the orbs and the armor/tools.
-Just to clarify, this mod is definitely not going to be released before 1.8, as it would be silly to code aspects and features that Notch is already putting in the game. (NPCs, new mob properties, combat changes, etc)
Release time is when it's done, but I'd like to shoot for around when Minecraft officially releases.
-Thieves have a very low spawn chance, 2% max, and you can easily get back any stolen Keystones by killing the next one you see.
-Once inside a Temple, you will be restricted from placing blocks or items, unless a specific one is specified in that particular temple. Temples exist within their own dimension.
-Keystones and Artifact-related items are indestructible in one way or another. They will always be recoverable.
-Currently, if you accidentally destroy your artifact items, they will respawn in the Labyrinths where you found them. If you die while in a Labyrinth, you will respawn with them still in your inventory.
-In case you're wondering, the White Labyrinth can use any combination of the colors, minus black, as white is a combination of all primary colors.
-The White Labyrinth is not the final Labyrinth. There are 6 regular labyrinths, and one final labyrinth.
-This mod is for single player only, for the time being.
-The Divining Stone pulses faster the closer you are to the artifact.
-You can convert Keystones from one color to another using Orichalcum.
-You won't be able to turn thieves off.
-It says right on the image, but Artifacts only spawn within a reasonable (but large) radius around your initial spawn point.
-The image didn't have to be this big, but I did it anyway.
-There are several undisclosed details and features that weren't in the preview, because we are coding them and don't want to promise something and then end up not doing it.

I LOVE IT! Great idea! I like in some ways how single player never ends, which allows you limitless time to build things, but I also think that having a goal rather than "SURVIVE!" would be a great implementation. It's a good idea of course, but shouldn't there be more to it than just collecting them? Like finding a secret place like an altar that you place them in, like a chest, or maybe making it 9 of the yellow artifacts that you collect and craft together to make a bigger artifact that will then help you in your journey to find a FINAL artifact. So basically, the 9 yellow things craft together to make that blinker, that then helps you find the tenth artifact which you take to the shrine and place to win the game? Also, this would be more of a side-quest because people mostly build. I love the idea though, good work on thinking it up :biggrin.gif: !
Yah, I guess they should have some use besides ending the game....but people, if you ask, "What do you get from this?" it's the END OF THE GAME! Gawrsh...
Normally, I hate any idea that has anything to do with putting a goal into Minecraft, but I think this idea is really good. I think:
-It should not be normal in single-player, but players have the option of downloading a mod from the site that lets them have this in the game.
-It could be a new game mode for SMP in which players race to find the artifacts. It can also have the option of turning dead players into "ghosts", and the player who finds the most artifacts before dying wins. (if players are tied, then whoever collected that number first wins; if all players are dead except for one, then the last player has to beat the person in first place within a specified amount of time to win)
I was actually thinking about making it so all the artifacts could be used to create something cool, but...
No reward=no reason to go get them=pointless.
In all honesty, to me personally, reaching the end of the game is the reward.
Simply having a goal instead of a sandbox makes the game 100% more fun to me, as it gives me actual reasons to build instead of 'I'm bored of this place, time to build a new one.'
The point of the Endgame is evident in the name: it's the end of the game.
But by the time you actually collect them, what could you want that you didn't already have? I'm open to suggestions that make sense. Maybe an unbreakable pickaxe? Or armor that doesn't take damage? Maybe building a rune or a portal with the artifacts gives them to you? Etc.
In any case, I hope a coder likes the idea and will pick it up.
You would have to encode ONLY "10" ( or whatever final number would be decided) to generate randomly in the biomes. If you could create a separate biome where the artifact generates, that would make more sense, but I don't think people can create biomes.
instead of a reward, after you collect all the artifacts AND has passed a day after you got the last one, you will find some kind of final boss (Even a giant slime could work) and when you kill the boss, it drops the reward (It could be something like a unbreakable material which you could use to make any of the avaible tools in the game, but just one, like, you make a pickaxe with it and you will never find this material, ever.
tl;dr: Find the 10 artifacts, fight final boss, get perfect material and choose a perfect tool.
My first idea was to make the moon to crash or a aseroid of some tipe in som part of the map and then recollect all the space materials (Obiously the explosion radius would be HUGE, so I don't think that's a goo idea, it could crash right next to you base...)
The artifacts should give you the power over creation and/or destruction.
Creation: right click to place new life extremely rapidly (trees, mobs, dirt, raise mountains, temples, etc, essentially giving you power over a smart terrain generator of some sort.)
Destruction: point and 'splode. Or something cooler... you may mind-control enemy mobs, and turn them to your side. your DARK ARMY will follow you around and attack any non-possessed mobs and other players.
But you must prove your worth against the Goddess Of Life And Death to gain her power. She is not an easy foe to beat, and she WILL summon mobs and modify terrain in order to kill you. It would be wise to prepare an arena in which it would be advantageous to fight her.

this sounds hard to program but if anyone can do this I would sacrifice all my diamonds and all more that I find this would be awesome
EPIC! i was thinking as a read the multiplayer part, what if you could choose to have a pvp server or a co-op server. if it was co-op then you had too find the artifacts together. if it was pvp you had to fight for them, and there were only 10 artifacts. so you had to kill each other for the persons artifacts. it would be awesome if that was added or made a mod.

"Happy Hunger Games and may the odds be ever in your favor!"
Why does she always say that???
no really, a boss(or multiple bosses) would be amazing.
YES
I propose that on peaceful there is no guardians or the artifacts, Easy there is a minor guardian per artifact (stronger then normal mobs) Normal there is multiple minor OR one even more powerful guardian
and on Hard there is a BOSS per artifact.
Combine this, with battle towers. make the battle towers drop the artifacts until finally they lead to the artifact tower. Made of lightstone with with the Nethergolem at the top.
Oh, and the Lighttower is in the Nether. Have fun being attacked by ghasts, killing the hardest monster in the game. AND GET THE POWER OVER LIFE AND DEATH.
