The players vision slowly adapts in dark environments to improve night vision at the cost of color vision. Sudden changes from dark to bright will blind the player. The night vision potion drastically reduces the time it takes to adapt.
Requirements
Iris shader compatibility
Background
I love playing at night. In my opinion it's a shame we sleep through almost every night because of mob spawning. For that reason I play with a mod that prevents hostile mobs from spawning on the surface, except on a full moon. This removes the hassle to run to the bed every ~10 minutes and enriches the experience by providing night scenery where setting up lights on the surface is more a decorative task instead of preventing mob spawning. (also I have a reason to track the moon phases.)
I've noticed a handheld light source with shaders dynamic light is nice, but your vision range is greatly impacted. I would like to have a trade off between lighting up everything vs keeping it dark and letting your natural vision adapt.
I have a background in programming, but don't have the time to actually look into this myself. I hope some people find this idea interesting.
