One thing that I thing could go along way that would help out the 'forced exploration', or 'adventure' aspect of Minecraft that seems to have been lost over the years, that is in keeping with a very vanilla feel of Minecraft would be that of changing up ore generation so that it is tied to the biome that it generates in.
A quick 'n dirty way of doing this would be to halve all current generation rates. Then, depending on the biome, some could then be half of that, regular (half of vanilla), then double rates or more. A quick 'list version' would look like this.
Deserts- double Diamond
Jungles- double Coal
Mountains- double Gold
Plains- double Iron and half coal
I have yet to find something that simply does this, and have mulled it over for years now. I'll eventually make it myself, but with a family now it's not in the near future. I just feel that it would go a long way to increase the motivation to travel and or have a base, or at least a mine, in other areas/biomes. It would also just make each biome have more of a 'point' I feel. Deserts may not exactly be lush, but that is where you go to mine diamonds (and sand for your glass creations).
