In vanilla Minecraft, when extending a platform over the void, one holds shift, faces towards the the existing platform and clicks on in the faces of the platform which face towards the void.
This idea is for a tool where a person can extend a platform by facing towards the platform's edge, and clicking on the top surface near the edge.
The tool will need to raytrace _through_ the clicked-on block to the next air block, and replace that air block with a block from the player's inventory.
