This is a mod idea i had for awhile, and tried to code it, but failed miserably :/
Magic is the power of influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces. A being that practices magic is a mage, magician, witch, warlock, or wizard.
This mod is about gathering the elements around you and using them to your advantage - for both good and bad. Miracles can happen, or nightmares.
Getting Started
First there are 4 elemental crystals you can get. These are fire, earth, water, and air. They all have a 25% chance of dropping from one ore, so let’s call it Manaesium. Manaesium Requires a diamond or gold pick to mine, and spawns very rarely in all biomes, layers 128 to 0. It comes in veins 10-20, making it an okay ore to get. When broken, the ore has a 10% chance of spawning a elemental guardian, a silverfish that can change color. It has the same stats as a silverfish, too. Manaesium can be used for a few things, the first thing being infusion.
(The ore should change color)
The other ore you can find is arcanite. It spawns from layers 64 to 0, and drops an arcanic crystal. This ore requires a iron pick to mine, however. It spawns in all biomes and is as common as lapiz, but only come sin veins of 1-2. It should look like nether quartz but purple and in stone.
Infusion
Infusion is a must if you want to master this mod. To make things fuse, you must create a multiblock. There are three different tiers of the multiblock, the first being weak and practically useless, the last being the best. To make the first level of the infusion altar you have to have an enchanting table, 17 rune blocks, and four runic framed glowstone, which is made with one glowstone and one runic block (and it gives you 1). Now how do you get runes? You find them in dungeon chests (usually a lot in the chests, 5 dungeons should let you have enough) and you can also make them later down the road, along with hostile mobs dropping them rarely (only mobs that have hands though, like skeletons and creepers).
Now what you want to do is make Infusion wand. This will help you start off with the main magic part of this mod, as it is used for recipes. To do this, you need to infuse several items with the infusion altar. But before you can infuse anything, you have to supply mana to the enchanting table. What’s mana you ask? The next section will explain.
Mana
Mana is like the RF of this mod, because its magical energy. To get mana, you can use several different ways, but to start off you have to use the least efficient way. You simply have to brew down a mix of all 4 gems (just throw them together in a crafting table) to get bottles of mana, and right click any interface that supports mana to insert it (about 20-25 mana points per bottle, it vaires). You can also drink bottles of mana, but we will get to that later. now that we have MP (Mana points) in the table, we can go back to infusion.
Infusion Cont.
To make an infusion wand, you’ll need 250 MP in the infusion altar. First, get some logs, and throw them at the infusion altar. Rainbow particles will shoot out of the pillars, and a whoosh sound effect will occur. You have gotten 1 mana wood! You can make blocks and other things with this stuff to. With 2 mana wood, you can make a mana stick in a crafting table. Then with your 150 MP remaining, make 1 rune (4 runes can be combined to make a rune block.), which is throwing stone on the table instead of wood. Then throw 2 gold, a mana stick, 1 rune, and all 4 elemental gems onto onto the table. Poof! You got you wand. now you can infuse way more things, but you’ll need way more mana and other things to get all of the OP stuff. (Plus with the infusion wand you get more yield with mana wood and stone.) Infusion wands are also used for more mechanics, too.
(The gem on the wand changes color)
Now with loads of new stuff at your fingertips, you have to get more mana, and save as much as possible. The next section will show you the rest of the ways to get mana and how to save a bit. It also will show you how to transport it!
Mana Cont.
You can do several things to save on mana, and get more. Here is a list of what you can do.
Magical Furnace: A furnace that melts down any item into MP, since all items have MP. The amount of MP varies per item, per say, dirt has 1 MP while a diamond has 500. You can use a mob farm system using hoppers and the furnace, which is a easy way for having a decent amount of mana. The furnace also has a buffer of 5000 MP, which is decent. However the furnace requires blaze powder as fuel.
Mana Flowers: Most flowers in the overworld generate small amounts of mana indefinitely. Here are the exact values:
Blue Orchids generate 5 mana per tick when near water.
Azure Bluets generate 2 mana per tick when in high places
Sunflowers generate 5 mana per tick when in the sunlight
Poppies generate 10 mana per tick when near lava, but despawn after 10 minecraft days near the substance.
Alliums generate 15 mana passively, making them a sought out for flower.
Nightshades are new flowers that only generate 5 mana per tick at night. This is a reference to terraria.
Creepers and TNT:When they blow up, they generate 50 mana. Using certain mods you can have a creeper spawner and some reinforced blocks, and potentially make a farm out of it.
Mana Reactor: This is a endgame way of generating mana is a 5x5x5 multiblock using certain materials that I will talk about later. You always have to monitor it so it doesn't overheat and explode, but it is well worth it because it generates 500 mana per tick and has a 100000 MP buffer. It runs of off blaze rods, and to cool it down, you need to supply it with liquid mana.
Now that you know what generates mana, you’ll be wondering how to transport it. This involves a new “pipe”, called an aura node. Aura nodes are made by mixing the 4 elements with 4 wool and 1 diamond on an infusion altar. But it won't work! You have to make different elemental rune blocks. This next section will tell you about runes.
Runes
You simply infuse 1 elemental gem of each kind to a blank rune (it will take 75 MP each). There is the fire, earth, water, and air runes. Craft 4 off each kind together, and you get the 4 elemental runic blocks. The more different elemental blocks you have (there are 16, but i'll get to that later.) the more stuff you can make. simply replace the blocks in the structure with whatever runes and you’ll be able to craft more stuff. Here is a list of different runes and how to make them.
First-Tier Runes
Runes of Fire: Made by infusing 1 fire crystal and a blank rune. Costs 100 MP.
Runes of Air: Made by infusing 1 air crystal and a blank rune. Costs 100 MP.
Runes of Water: Made by infusing 1 water crystal and a blank rune. Costs 100 MP.
Runes of Earth: Made by infusing 1 earth crystal and a blank rune. Costs 100 MP.
Second-Tier Runes (Requires a tier 2 altar)
Rune of Lava: Made by infusing a fire rune and 1 earth rune. Costs 460 MP.
Rune of Mud: Made by infusing a water rune with a earth rune. Costs 460 MP.
Rune of Mist: Made by infusing a water rune and a air rune. Costs 460 MP.
Rune of Smoke: Made by infusing a fire rune and an air rune. Costs 460 MP.
Rune of Steam: Made by infusing a fire rune and an air rune. Costs 460 MP.
Rune of Dust: Made by infusing a earth rune and an air rune. Costs 460 MP.
(Third tier runes need more practice in the knowledge of magic!)
You need the 4 elemental runes. Now you can make the aura nodes you so desire!
Nodes
This costs 200 MP, so you’ll still have to use the mana bottle method. Make sure you have the four elemental runes in your structure. Right click with a wand, and whoosh! You get a node, which you can do several things with. To see how much MP a node has, simply right click with an infusion wand. A node can hold 500 MP at a time.
Mana Transport: You can connect nodes with shift right clicking one node, and then another. You can also connect nodes to blocks that need mana or generate it, like the altar or flowers. However, they only travel in 6 directions. (When you wear the goggles seen below you can see rainbow particles going to one node to the next one that is connected the the original node.) So you got mana transport! How ever nodes lose mana the father they have to connect to each other. You can also color code nodes so you can know which one connects to which.
Now that you have nodes, you have almost mastered the movement and uses of mana. There are 2 things left to learn.
Mana can be condensed into liquids, by throwing three mana bottles into a bucket. The mana is infinite like water, but not infinite when putting it in the the mana reactor. You can potentially pipe it into the mana reactor using other mods, but if you can you can make the mana to thick and slow to travel through certain modded pipes.
You can actually lessen the amount of mana usage by 10% by wearing magic robes, however, only have 2 bars of protection and 100 durability. Magic robes are created by throwing in leather armor and some other materials. Here is the list:
1) Magic Hood: 1 Gold, 2 Glass, and 4 leather. (With this on you can see the mana flowing through nodes). It has a mana discount of 2% and it costs 1000 MP. You'll need a rune of air for this.
2) Magic Chest Piece: 1 Gold, 4 Elemental Crystals (1 type of each), and 8 leather. It has a mana discount of 3% and it costs 1500 MP. You'll need a rune of fire for this.
3) Magic Leggings: 7 leather and 1 wool (for softness). It has a mana discount of 3% and it costs 1500 MP. You'll need a rune of water for this.
4) Magic Boots: 2 Gold and 4 leather. It has a mana discount of 2% and it costs 1000 MP. You'll need a rune of earth for this.
Altar Upgrades
Know that you know a lot of stuff you want to learn more. To do this you need to upgrade your altar. add 1 level to the altar base, make the runic framed glowstone 1 higher, and add 3 block tall pillars with the 4 elemental runes on the top. (The runes can be in any order.)
Now you have a tier two altar and can get into more fun things, like more runes, blocks, and even spells! You may have to stay on this level of altar for a while, because a tier 3 altar is endgame. Let start with the new material you can get with this new altar.
Manalachite
Manalachite is a material only made by infusing pure mana and gold plus having the 4 elemental runes on the altar. You can use mana sticks and manalacite to make tools and armor. It has the same stats as iron, except you can infuse it with mana to repair it. You need 500 MP to make it and how ever many MP to restore it based on its durability.
Spells
The spell system is a large one, and can have endless possible recipes and spells. However, fusion isn't needed on this one. Finally :P. To start off you need some spell parchment, which is make with 2 sticks and 1 paper in a diagonal pattern.
Then you can make a scribing table. in a helmet shape, but 4 elemental bark at the sides and one parchment and quill, which is the same thing as a book and quill but with a parchment, in the center. When you place the table down, is two blocks long and has books, paper, and an ink jar on it. When you open its gui, it has paper on the left side (in the background) and 2 slots on the right, and a 9 slot line in the bottom left. Now you can make spells!
But before you do, you need mana in your system. To do this, you need another multiblock, let's just call it a mana imburer. This is a simple multi block, however. you need 2 arcane empowerment tables, made with the 4 elemental runes in a boot template (in any order), 2 mana wood in between them, as well as 2 light blue wool above each set of runes, and a mana bottle in the center. Then you’ll need 2 aura nodes, and then supply the nodes with mana and right click the 2 empowerment tables with a wand. Itll take 5000 mana to activate, so you’ll need a lot. Itll take 50 mana a minute to keep it up and running, and when it runs out of MP, you’ll need 5000 more. The structure will be 2 empowerment tables next to each other (make it so the top changes color) and the aura nodes 1 block left and right to the the tables and then 3 blocks up. Connect the nodes to the tables, and your done!
Then you can right click it to open the gui. you will see a single button, and a text bar under it. To level up your mana, you have to transfuse your xp to mana. The first level requires 1 level of exp, the second requires 2 levels of exp, etc. the mana bar can be seen above your hunger bar, and when underwater, the bubbles now shows up above the mana bar. Every time you level up, you gain 100 mana. To refill your mana, drink mana potions or stand on the infusion altar and right click with a wand. Now you may notice refilling on the go may be tedious, so there are upgraded versions of mana bottles that you can make. The one you know is the lesser bottle of mana, and is blue. The upgraded version can be made by adding arcane ash to your potion, which you can get from the arcanite ore. This can restore 100 MP and is know as the regular mana potion, being a bright pink. Then you have to make a magic compound to upgrade the regular mana potion, which is made by infusing glowstone, arcane ash, and slimeballs. It costs 700 MP, however, restores 750 MP. There is also a creative bottle which restores 9001 mana.
Now that you have a decent amount of mana flowing through your veins, hook up the scribing table to a aura node. Place spell paper in the top right slot, and ink below it. Then a new gui bubble appears, and there are some spells on them. The more spells scrolls you find from dungeon chests, and the more runes you make, the more spells are available to you. There can be endless opportunities and choices! However once you make your spells you have to go through a puzzle to unlock them. Each spell costs a random amount of runes, of any kind at one type. One spell could cost 9 runes of different types at once! Each spell costs 1000 MP to make, however. Some examples of spells are:
Fireball
Heal
Freeze
Arcane Bolt
Dig
Speed
Water Breathing
And Much More!
Endgame
You have to go to the end to advance to the final stages of this mod. Once you kill the dragon, you get 2 dragon hearts. You make 1 dragon heart into 64 dragon heart string, and keep one for later. With diamonds and 4 heart sting, you can make draconic gems which you can make blocks and later tools and armor out of. But first you need to upgrade your altar. Simply add the 4 draconic gem blocks above the tier 2 elemental runes, and have all tier 1 and tier 2 runes present in the build.
Now you can infuse the “unstable” draconic gem with a more stable diamond to get the stable draconic gem, and reinforced mana sticks (mana sticks surrounded by iron) you can make tools and armor. The tools are 2x better than diamond in every way, making them op. You can charge them up by shift clicking, and they gain magic powers. The pick and shovel can mine a 3x3 area and the axe can cut town whole trees. The sword can increase its attack range and damage by 6, but all at the cost of mana from your MP bar. The armor provides full protection, like diamond, and has 2x the durability. With the cost of mana, you can even fly with the wings on the chestpiece for 1 minute at a time. You've become OP!
Final Words
The other things you can do are to make even more runes for more powerful spells, summon mobs, and grow new crops. Explore to find new exciting structures, dimensions, and bosses. Add upgraded nodes. But it is up to you. You decide what you do with the mana reactor, You decide what you do with the mod! I only gave you a guideline. You can make more. Be your own person and make this the best mod ever! PS. Don’t make it bad either
Sorry for the wall of text, i couldn't get pictures to work
The necessary ores seem a little to rare to get started, and I don't think many players would like an ore that has a large chance of dropping nothing at all when mined, I'd suggest having them be somewhere closer to iron in rarity, and guarantee at least one resource drop per ore.
I think that the starting runes should also be more accessible, perhaps as an uncommon mob drop in addition to being found as dungeon loot.
The main problems I see with this concept is the scarcity of resources required. If your mod's lowest tier mechanics are harder to acquire than emeralds, then you need to reconsider accessibility.

Actually, Manaesium drops one of the four elements always, but has a 25% of dropping one specific element each time you mine it. Fore example:
Manaesium Ore - 25% Air Shard
25% Water Shard
25% Fire Shard
25% Earth Shard
That's also true, runes should be found in and easier method. I may add that some zombies and other skeletons hold runes, too.
This mod is supposed to be late game, but i get your point. Ill make the mining level required gold pickaxes and diamond picks, and the ore be way more accessible.
I recognize many elements from thaumcraft and botania.
I would like to assist in developing this mod, although I'm not that skilled, but I can learn.
thanks. This mod does have some aspects of all the other mods, but i want a universal magic mod so people don't have to install 30 something mods to get what they are looking for. If you want to help, contact Shuetox, cause I think he's coding the mod for 1.8.

My patience wears thin on strawmen and lies.
Unfortunately, animated textures are a little beyond my ability at the moment.

Cool Idea
Wow! That's really cool! Can you make the arcanite darker? wait, i have a texture: (Just download the images to see them closer up.)
Thank you! I tried my best, and it took me a week.
The mods sounds good.
If you want to help, contact Shuetox, cause I think he's coding the mod for 1.8.
hows the mod going Shuetox?
are you even working on it?
I realize this is still a very good idea and is very well rounded. i wish to see people working on this, so bump i guess. (Sorry for necro)

Unfortunately I don't think he is working on the mod anymore, ad that is why i wanted to bump this thread.
