I seem to remember from playing back in 1.4 one of the mods had a recipe for glowstone that had gold and redstone in it, so that the materials were interchangeable. It also explained how the pigmen were able to collect a good quantity of gold for their vanilla swords.
How strange, half of my last post has evaporated, I must have mis-clicked something, it was about about how certain features of TFC would be good to have in other forms of modded minecraft, especially with the high demands of gold in many tech mods.
I like this idea, very original. You could start with a simple pan that you would dip into the water.. Then you could move onto a box that you could either bucket or pump water in to wash dirt/gravel. Maybe add a hose you could spray against a river bank to loosen up metals.

TerraFirmaCraft, a mod that revamps Survival Mode, comes with a gold-panning feature. This is one of the two ways to get metals early in the game if you don't have the necessities for mining, smelting and smithing yet. (The other way involves looking for metal nuggets lying on the ground.) It would be nice if there's a mod that adds only the gold-panning.
As for mod compatibility, you could use MineTweaker to make it work with other mods. It's what I used to make TerraFirmaCraft work with the other mods in my mod pack.
