even though the code is shared, it is still illegal because the mod owner has to say in a post that he/she gives permission for people to modify the code. Without that, no one can modify the code in any way, even for personal use
I checked his github and the licence there is the MIT Licence which does permit modifications. However, since it is his mod you should seek his permission before attempting to update it.
