The concept of the mod is pretty simple. When a "wooden" block burns (Although it could be any burnable block, configs man...) then there is a 90% chance of the burnt block turning into ash. It's a greyish block with gravity, looks a bit like sand, and turns into 3-5 ash dust. 4 ash dust in a square makes an ash block, and 9 ash in a square makes a charcoal. That's the whole mod.
Here are some images for inspiration:
The reason for this is because I was watching videos of people houses getting burned down and while entertaining, there is something really empty about a raging inferno that leaves no trace. A real burned object leaves behind a blackened husk. I would love to see some sort of version of that in Minecraft.
Do you know how many uses ash has? It's more common uses range from insulation to fertilizer. Having ashes in Minecraft could actually add much more than just some junk to clutter the inventory. Heck, ashes stay warm for hours after a fire! That's why firemens continue to water a fire zone until there is no more risk of having another blaze on their hands.
That could a possible use, if slightly annoying. Maybe you could also use it in a crafting recipe to make uncraftable dirt blocks like myecelium & podzol. As Soriel suggested, it's a good fertiliser, so maybe even use it to craft farmland which won't revert back to dirt. Good for maintaining farms
Also, if you're going for an aesthetic mod, I suggest having the block appear as a partial block (like slabs, carpet etc), and render as a pile of ash rather than a cube. This could emit smoke particles to give it more realism, and be a good addition to epic builds with a "destroyed city/ruins" vibe.

I really enjoy this concept. I mean currently the developer for "GrumpysMod", which is basically a bunch of random stuff that I wanted to code. Is this a standalone mod that is already in development, or could I add this to my mod?
I beg to differ here. Ashes does not make charcoal. Charcoal is wood hypersaturated with carbon, thus why we have a furnace recipe in minecraft to make charcoal. Ashes are devoid of carbon, but is rich in other components, which is why ashes is a good fertiliser.

I was trying to keep the mod simple. I am aware that ash in real life does not make charcoal, but to keep a use for the ash I figured turning it into charcoal was the best thing, since the rate of exchange was quite fair. If you want it so that the ash acts as bonemeal instead that'd be cool, but it would also make bonemeal expensive in comparison.

I am going to be developing this mod, thank you for the suggestions, if you have more, let me know. The base version is going to be just the main stuff. I am developino this for 1.7.10.
This does sound pretty cool, I can just picture those rare lava pools on the surface of the world around a lot of trees and instead of just the trees burning away it turns the area into an ashy tiny wastelandish place. Would be pretty cool xD even more so if it was to happen in a jungle!
I like the idea of the ash causing you damage to as if it got into your lungs if there was a lot, and maybe even causing some level of blindness as tho it got into your eyes.

Let me rename your mod idea, which I believe was never suggested before, into Fire Traces mod.

What would ash be used for? If it has no purpose other than to look good then it would just clutter the world/inventories

How bout the ashes could have a chance to start a fire again.

Did you even read the post? Ash makes charcoal.

and when you get too close to it you take damage because it gets into your lungs

These differences can be handled through configs. E.get "Coal can be crafted from Ash?"
As you are the original poster, do I have your permission to develop this concept into my mod?
I'd rather it was a separate mod.
I just don't really see this as enough changes to be a full standalone mod, but I will attempt it.
I came here full in doubt that someone wanted another realism mod. I like this idea.
Maybe it could act like soul sand when walking over it?
Maybe it could be found naturally in The Nether?
Maybe Wither Skeletons could drop it, like they do with coal?
Maybe nerf it with the charcoal, make it 9 ash blocks.
Maybe add config options for hard crafting! (Adding one ash to things like, Blaze Powder, Flint and Steel and Fire charge.)
Maybe in said config add options to disable parts of the mod? (like maybe you don't want Withers to drop ash)
Those were just suggestions for the guy who said it would be inventory clutter.
Besides Flint has like, 3 uses. Arrows, Flint and Steel and probably something else I should know.
