Ok, so it has been very long since this mod was last updated. The thread was locked, the author said he permanently quit, and it is stuck in modloader 1.3.somethin. So, please, someone make a forge 1.7.10 version.
Essentially, using this and lockdown mod would allow the designing of a sidescroller modpack, my every intention. Please help, please update. Also, the mod is not copyrighted and I think he would be happy if someone updated it for him.
Edit: So here's the scoop. In a pm thejackimonster (former creator) has told me he permits anyone to update it by any means possible, he just wants to see it updated. So you CAN profit, and imagine just how much you will if you update it. Although you would have to make it free for modpacks because of it's nature. So we have its sources and its permission now all we need is a modder to make it happen.
Here's the source:

Here's the (rather long) conversation I had in a PM with the original creator:

OK, it has literally been years since this mod was even a thing. 2D Craft, to my understanding, was a mod you created long ago not for forge. I have used 2D Craft in the past, and it was by far my favorite mod. I have read the thread extensively and realized you have abandoned it to create a standalone game. I also realize I should not ask a mod creator to update a mod. But I have to say, in the modding community, a forge version of 2D craft for the latest version would be legendary. And I mean, like, LEGENDARY. Seriously, if you updated this mod for forge, think of its potential and capabilities. It would be extremely popular, perfect with the wall jump mod, and essentially be used to create some of the best maps ever. So I basically had a vision, a revelation. There is this mod called lockdown which allows you to lock maps when creating a new world, and a vanilla option to lock resource packs within those worlds. What am I getting at? You could seriously make an entire sidescroller game out of Minecraft. Plus there is a Terraria items/mobs mod. Need I say more?
Please understand, I am not demanding you update your mod, just asking politely. I know you as well as many other modders have a lot on their plates. So do I as a modpack manager, resource packer, mapper, occasional skinner, and an idea generating machine (if that even makes sense....). But this is a pretty big deal, just inventing this mod. This is quite possibly better then a mod IChun could make, or mechanics Sethbling could break. If you do choose to update Minecraft will be complete. And, I do not know how difficult updating a mod is, probably stressful and a ton of work. If you decide not to, that is fine too. You have probably never considered updating after moving on to a new game. But please at least consider.
That is all I can say.
So how I came to writing this long pm? I basically saw your sword art online ui mod, and was like "Holy cow, isn't that the guy who made 2D Craft?" Of course, the mod is up to date and pretty much the best UI mod since damage indicators. By the way, just have to inquire, sorry if this takes away my credibility, what is your modpack policy on that mod? Of course, if I were to include it into a modpack, I would credit you and not recieve any profit.
Anyways, I am just asking 3 questions:
1. Will you update 2D Craft?
2. Are you considering updating 2D craft?
3. What is your policy on modpacks?

First: I thank you for your enthusiasm about this mod, but just to make one thing clear, it wouldn't be just updating.. it would be recreating because I have lost the source and the structure of minecraft changed a lot and modding with forge has a few advantages and disadvantages for making this mod...
So, I thought about reviving this mod many times, but it's a very different situation than a few years ago. Minecraft changed.. I learned professional developing and I don't want to make a game like Minecraft, Terraria or Starbound... again..
There are so many possibilities to play so many different games and I want to make something really new.. with a new concept, maybe a new genre or something like that..
..And I'm sorry about that, but it seems to me that modding games like Minecraft stops me doing this, because it comsumes time ( a lot more than just coding.. answering questions, updating the mod many times again.. adding features.. fixing many bugs )
Just to make sure:
1. I will not update 2D Craft.
2. Maybe.. If I've got nothing better to do.. I'm sorry..
3. I think modpacks are for the players really cool, because they bring them mods they hadn't downloaded theirselves ( So they get new experiences.. )... but if you mean "for developers": It's very difficult to work well together with other guys ( there can arise many communication-problems... )
PS: If you have sent this message, because you've seen that I developed a new mod, then I have to add: I just made this, cause I was bored and I like the anime.. ^^

Thank you for responding, I was just curious if you had given up on the mod.
However, I was referring to your policy of including your (SAO) mod in modpacks, whether that sort of distribution was encouraged or prohibited. Like, a "Can I use this in a modpack" question. Some authors such as the creator of Mutant Creatures completely and wholly say, "No, you may not," while other notable modders say "go ahaid" or "please do."
I completely understand you would rather veer away from Minecraft and create your own game, innovation is a great thing. Some people get tired of staring at blocks their whole lives. Not even shaders or nocubes could fix that, if you know what either of those are. XD
It is good to see variety.
Lastly, there have been some mod makers such as grim and gotolinks who have spent their time updating dead mods. I felt it would be wrong to just ask if they could perhaps remake 2D Craft for 1.7.10 without asking you first, so would you allow anyone to update it, just hypothetically?
Again, thanks for reading. I hope I am not bothering you. And good luck with any game you are working on.

Sure.. if they would do that, they can update it. I've no problem with it.. I think, if they would do this, I also would play with this mod. ^^
Oh, it turns out this is neither modloader nor forge. Meh. Java code is Java code and converting it ought to be the same process anyway.
BTW, you would not be doing it for free necesarrily, you could use an adfly link for money. You know, as long as you have a fair modpack policy, because this is really essential for a modpack. So, envision this:
The Sonic The Hedgehog mod, which has working springs, from a sideways perspective and 2D Controls.
The megaman battle network mod well has a mega buster and the wall jump to parkour.
Mario Mod, anyone?
I mean, imagine this with the WALL JUMP mod. It would be legendary.
Plus, you (and the original author) would get all the credit.
HECK, you don't even have to work off of this code, just make a 2D mod that is forge compatible and not a game by itself.
I Really want someone to make a 1.7.10 version of this mod i have loved this mod forever the first person i watched play minecraft used this and its the guy with the creeper mask up there but yeah i went to get it a few weeks ago and it didn't work because i have a different launcher and everything i want someone to make it for forge 1.7.10 Please someone do this!

And reverting the launcher doesn't even work, because you would have to revert Java also, so this mod really needs updating.
Shoot me a PM if you need help fleshing out ideas. Even though this post is hella old, I have to correct it...
If by which you mean it was a base-edit mod, then no it isn't easy to convert to a loader without rewriting the entire thing. With base edits, you have the freedom to do what you want in the way you like with the code; you're editing the code of the game, at the trade-off of compatibility and ease-of-management. With a loader, you can do what you want but it has to do things the way the loader intended; hence much greater compatibility and it's easy to manage, at the cost of potentially not being able to do certain things without base edits or very hacky workarounds.
Converting a base-edit mod means you need to work out which hooks the loader you use provides best suit your current code, then you need to do the same with the code itself (work out how to translate your old base-edit code to a cleaner new section of code that utilises the hooks the loader provides). Sometimes this is easy, most of the time it can be very tedious and time consuming, and in some cases it's honestly better off to rewrite the mod.

I have realized that it would be difficult a bit after that old post, but knowing the mod author, he wouldn't mind the profit.
Getting back to the difficulty part, I now agree a rewrite for forge would be a better idea. I added the forge part because it has insane modpacking potential. Also, I hope that someone who would hypothetically do this would keep it a world generation option.
Thanks for clearing that up.
Even with the rewrite, it would be a difficult task. But if someone succeeded, the results would be great!
Oh, yeah, and about those earlier posts about Terraria being better than Minecraft, you cannot compare a 2D and 3D sandbox. They are neither better nor worse, just different. But I think with this mod's potential update, Minecraft can finally be compared, possibly.

So those are two off the bat who do it for free. (from modloader 1.2.5+ to 1.6.4/1.7.10 forge)
Edit: And please, be more respectful here.

Terraria is 2D Minecraft.
Coded better, more mobs and blocks. I personally prefer minecraft, but you might want to check it out.
Other then that, it would be better to code a custom game then to make 2D minecraft time wise
Try Diamond-Lang, it's Ruby (the programming language) for One Command Creations.
2 words. FORGE and COMPATIBILITY.
We want Minecraft in its full blown glory for identical blocks, mechanics, and modpack/resource pack support.
You can make a game 10000x more awesome than Minecraft, but it is not the same.
In simpler terms, this is a world gen mod. A 2D new game is a different story.
So I would prefer this:
Over this:
Ok. Try cutting a chuck out with MCEdit and using f5 mode?
Try Diamond-Lang, it's Ruby (the programming language) for One Command Creations.
There is no such camera angle, and each chunk would theoretically have to be pried individually.

Don't know if this would be easier for a modder but ... couldn't you just add a new f5 camera angle and use mcedit like described above?
Check out my mod that I will make. I'll try to update it with more ideas every week or so. I am going to go to a program soon where I'll learn code more in depth and hope for the idea to be fully thought out by then > http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/requests-ideas-for-mods/2370328-gold-mining-mod-suggestion
