Sounds more like a postproc shader might be better... I don't know if the two brightness extremes are good enough to make a good effect.
That is, if I was to do this, I would want to do it properly; moody and bright settings = not good enough for say, blinding light when stepping out of a dark cave, pitch darkness when looking into a dark space, etc.
I will look into it.
