Most everyone knows about or at least has heard about Tinker's Construct, an awesome mod introduced in Hexxit and used a lot in the Yogscast's Moonquest for building custom weapons, but everyone also knows that in the real world forging weapons is only a fraction of actual weapon creation. Forging a weapon from a cast is only half of the battle, the real deal begins when you take out the hammer and start molding the blade...
The Blacksmith Mod's a concept that can act as a nice inclusion as a side-mod to Tinker's Construct, to add a level of variety to modpacks with Tinker's already included, or to act on its own accord. Essentially it is a weapon customization mod, allowing players to make their own custom weapons from a variety of different metals and materials and forging them into awesome blades.
The mod includes a number of different weapons, blocks, and enchantments, though the big thing it adds is more weapon variety. One can even take an existing weapon of their such as an enchanted diamond sword and reforge it into a more effective and epic weapon with better enchantments.
The Key Items:
Smith's Hammer - a small tool, similar to a Flint and Steel or a pair of Shears, easily made item that has several tiers starting with stone. A Smith's Hammer is used both as a tool and as a crafting item used for making some of the basic blocks of the game used to make good weapons. The following hammers can be made:
Stone Hammer - Gold Hammer - Iron Hammer - Diamond Hammer - Brass Hammer - Bronze Hammer - Titanium Hammer - Platinum Hammer
Smith's Chisel - a small tool like the Smith's Hammer, used for carving items. Specifically used in the Smith's Grinder and the Smith's Crafting Ledge. Same number of tiers for the Chisel as there are in the hammer.
Blacksmith's Anvil - A block used similarly to a crafting table, made combining an Anvil, two crafting tables, a furnace, and a stone hammer. This anvil is used to make the base weapons of the mod, such as stone. Can be upgraded to an iron, diamond, and platinum version for better weapons, and a gold one for decoration purposes. A universal godly anvil can be made in creative mode to allow instant access to weapon making for adventure maps and other functions. Requires an appropriately tiered Smith's Hammer to be equipped in order to use.
Blacksmith's Grinder - A 2x1x2 block used to apply certain enchantments to weapon blades. Can be built using a pair of enhanced crafting tables, a wheel of any tier, an anvil, and a hammer and chisel equivalent to the wheel in use. Can apply enchantments and shape weapon blades, allowing for enhanced customization. Comes in the same tiers as the Blacksmith's Anvil.
Blacksmith's Crafting Ledge - A 2x1x1 block that can be attacked to a wall, used to carve into weapon pieces to apply modifier materials for future enchantments or other uses, as well as other specific items. Requires a pair of crafting tables, a furnace, an Item Shelf, and both a pair of shears and a chisel of any description. Requires a chisel whose tier is appropriate to the weapon piece being modified.
Waterwheel - A modifier item that can be attached to a wall with running liquid underneath that can increase the speed of a Grinder, thus increasing grind time and quality. Can be either wood or iron, with wood requiring water and iron usable in either water or lava. The speed of the liquid flow does not determine the speed of the Waterwheel.
Enhanced crafting table - A crafting table that is enhanced and is used primarily as a building material. It can also be used to apply lesser sockets to pre-built weapons, and acts similar to a Tool Bench in Tinker's Construct, essentially holding whatever you place there on the table instead of dropping it like in normal Minecraft, allowing you to get back to it without making a mess. Requires wood logs and iron ingots surrounding a crafting table.
All weapon-making and tool-making in this mod is done similar to Tinker's Construct in that it is done by applying an item, such as a heated ingot or two pieces of cobblestone, to the surface of the block and using the tool in your hand to apply an effect to that item. In the case of the Blacksmith's Anvil, one can place an ingot of any kind into the furnace slot on the bottom of the gui to turn it into a heated ingot, which can be taken out and placed on the top of the anvil, leaving it heated for a few seconds for use. Simply placing a heated ingot and wacking it with a hammer will mold it into a shaped ingot, which in turn can be shaped further into a blade type. Depending on how and when it is placed in the anvil, grinder, ledge, or if it is rinsed and repeated, will in turn create a different blade type. Different blade types can be used for different weapon applications, such as a saber, scimitar, sickle, axe head, spear head, etc. While it would be amazing to actually affect the blade's shape in a minigame environment, thus determining what it will look like based on where the ingot is hammered, it likely will take too long to implement that into the game.
Certain blade types will be available or unavailable to this mod depending, specifically due to the fact that it is to be made as a potential sister mod to Tinker's Construct, so that in modpacks it can provide a different means of crafting certain items that Tinker's Construct currently cannot craft. This can provide quite a bit of variety to modpacks, and also help make the mod stand out on its own without directly competing with Tinker's Construct (which is itself an amazing mod).
Other tools can potentially be made with this mod, but the primary focus is in what is available in a blacksmithing environment that doesn't include a forge and/or crucible (similar to what Tinker's Construct does) and provides just the anvil. Primarily the tools made in a blacksmith are weapon blades, armor, tool blades (like sickles, shears, and fire stokers), and horseshoes (though a lot more can be done in a blacksmith environment than just that).
All tool items can be modified through use of one of the three tool blocks.
The following tool options could potentially be implemented in this mod:
Broadsword - The most basic and easiest sword, made by either forging a shaped ingot and putting it through the grinder once, or by merging two pieces of stone together to make a basic stone blade (stone refers to any kind of stone item, such as cobblestone, cooked stone, netherrack, sandstone, and lapis blocks). Essentially it is an equivalent to creating an actual sword in Minecraft, except it can be built with modifiable materials. Pieces needed - Broadsword Blade (Shaped Ingot put through the Grinder once), basic guard, basic hilt.
Saber - Made by putting a Shaped Ingot back into the Anvil a second time, turning it into a Refined Ingot, and putting that in turn into the grinder, which in turn makes a dueling blade. Has a faster attack speed and slightly longer reach and can allow a person to leap backward a short way when they right-click. Requires a dueling blade, any guard, and a basic hilt.
Scimitar - Made by putting a shape ingot into the grinder, making a Broadsword Blade, and putting that back into the Grinder, creating a Curved Blade. Increases speed and cutting edge of the weapon, thus increasing damage. Requires a Curved blade, any guard, and a basic hilt
Spear - Made by taking any ingot and placing it first into the grinder, creating a Spear head. This is attached to a wood shaft, which is made by taking two wood logs onto a Smith's Crafting Ledge similar to sticks (though it only makes 2 of them). Spears have an extended range but less knockback, and can be thrown. Requires a Spear Head and a Wood Shaft
Javelin - Made by taking any wood shaft and placing it into the crafting ledge and applying a chisel of any quality tier. Can be thrown like a spear but has much less durability.
Glaive - Made by taking a broadsword blade and putting it through the furnace in a Blacksmith's anvil, creating a heat-treated blade, which in turn can be tossed in a cauldron allowing it to cool, creating a Refined Blade. Two of these are put together on a hilt to create a double-blade weapon. Players can leap long-distances with this weapon by pressing right-click (equivalent of Tinker's Construct's Longsword). Requires two Refined Blades and any hilt
Claymore - Made by taking a Refined blade and attaching it to an Enhanced Hilt, creating a large, slow blade that can cause mobs to drop their heads when killed (Equivalent of Tinker's Construct's Cleaver). Requires a Refined Blade, a Wide Guard, and an Enhanced Hilt
Poleaxe - Made by taking a Refined blade and putting it through a grinder, turning it into a Refined Edged Blade, and attaching it to a wood shaft with a spear blade. Has an extended reach and better knockback but attacks slowly. Requires a Refined Edge Blade, a Wood Shaft, and a Spear Blade.
That's pretty much the gist of it for now. Again, this mod concept is essentially a sister-mod to Tinker's Construct and is not meant to directly compete with it, but rather provide a good alternative and potentially a nice bit of variety when put into modpacks alongside TC. Lemme know what you guys think! I really hope this becomes a thing!
