Uh, was something wrong with my English? I speak English most of the time and grew up using mandarin, Cantonese, and, little later, spanish. And French from school. But looking at my post now, I guess there are a few (quite a lot actually) mistakes that i left unattended. (like: time(s)).
Anyways, it is pretty ironic that you ended up not having enough time to edit a long post you spent hours into, and yet the effort was to shorten it. haha.
Why are you splitting sticks into twigs and sticks? Shouldn't they be the same? What is the difference between them?

Little bits here and there that give me the impression that you're not a native speaker, that's all. I've spent so much of my life studying languages that these tend to jump out at me. You were reasonably understandable, so it's more of an interesting quirk than a problem.
...you ended up not having enough time to edit a long post you spent hours into, and yet the effort was to shorten it.
It's certainly funny, but it doesn't take me hours to write these posts. I write (and think) pretty quickly, on the whole. It's just that if I stop to go back over the post and edit it down to a shorter, pithier version, it takes me a lot longer (and yes, I can spend hours on the shortening process).
Why are you splitting sticks into twigs and sticks?
Well, for one, I want to have a bunch of burnable wood bits, but not a lot of usable sticks that lead to tools. It's a tech barrier, making sure that it's not too easy to gather tons of torches, tools, fences, ladders, and the like.
For two, I want to see a distinction between the three major components of fire, which are Tinder, Kindling, and Fuel. Sticks work for Kindling and planks (or a Firewood item) work for fuel, but for Tinder I can't think of anything already in the game that's easy to get and is a tiny thing that burns. So I decided to add Twigs.

...all of a sudden I'm wanting to have to chop wood into firewood (or planks) by hand. Like, putting a single Log block down (unconnected to any other Log blocks) and then chopping it is the only way to get firewood (or planks, whichever).
I have no idea if this is a really bad idea or a decent one, but it's interesting to me.

To Kilyle:
Haha, someone else(BreakinDragon) had requested that before, and I've been working on that for while now. I am just stuck in the "evolution" of the player's "technology."
How it works currently:
1. Punch logs.
2. Gather sticks from leaves(and Leaf Litter too as a separate mod)
3. Find some flint(from gravel or grass block, not dirt because it can be abused)
4. Craft flint tools
5. Get some food(from animals or berries)
6. Craft firepit(probably renamed to Campfire, because I have another request for a larger one) and start your fire
7. Next day
8. Gather more logs (used to burn, no other use yet), food, etc.
There is where what is currently implemented ends. My thoughts were to build a saw and start cutting your logs into planks. Then you can craft your crafting table(What do you think of requiring leather on top?) and then normal Minecraft begins (stone tools, beds, and the like). However, you could probably build your saw in the first day, and skip that entire section of forcing you to build a campfire to avoid the hostiles at night and use flint tools (because you can just craft better ones). Due to the limited crafting space, it is hard coming up with logical crafting recipes that fit both the space, progress curve, and available resources.

Kilyle, I'd be happy to take on the ideas of Roughing It, is that ok with you?
I'm never stingy with my ideas, which means that if you want to take these ideas and run with them on your own, then go ahead and try, and if you come up with something usable, post a link on this thread.
If you want to "join the team" as it were, then coordinate with andykuo1 here. At present it's a little up in the air as to who's in charge of the code; outcastjack got a certain ways into it (that's a working model; I forget which Minecraft it goes with, but it was back when modifying the Jar was the norm... ETA: this one seems more current) and seems to be still around (that's better than 80% of my other mod ideas, sigh), but Andy seems to be the go-to guy right now. That might make him Chief Coder, working from outcastjack's old stuff.
Actually, if you want to join the team, let me know, and I'll stick you on the PM discussion thread I had going with outcastjack some time ago. It's got lots of back-and-forth about the details of the mod and some installation info.
andykuo1, I'll be adding you to that PM thread as soon as I finish this post.
c_hay77, I'm not sure what's left undone, but I'd be glad to have a decent spriter/texture artist on this project. Could you make some pics of Macadamia Nuts, Porridge, and, um, a Roasted Egg? Let's see what you're capable of.
I am just stuck in the "evolution" of the player's "technology."
The vanilla "start by punching logs" is explicitly the mechanic I'm trying to get rid of.
That's why I want tools you can craft by picking up fallen sticks (or breaking them off of foliage) and finding bits of flint in gravel, clay, or (at a lower drop rate) grass, and make in your 2x2 inventory crafting grid. (I've thought about adding a string or bark requirement to tie the flint to the wood, but I think wedging it into a bit of a hole probably works well enough for my purposes. They're meant to be tools that break pretty quickly anyway.)
Don't suppose you could come up with a Bamboo Hammock? I just saw a guy make a real-life hammock out of bamboo on Dual Survival, which was an eye-opener; I had no idea you could do that. But you could attach it to two surfaces a bit off the ground, and sleep in it. And if you have a campfire going, no mobs should bother you.
You know, the more I think about adding stages to the wood-chopping stuff, the more I think it's an idea that would work with your other requester's ideas more than mine. I've tried to visualize my use of it and I don't really want to have saws or anything more complex than the vanilla toolset plus flint tools. (Though I'd like to see something like Hardened Flint replace the current cobblestone tools. Apparently in real life, cooking flint really does create a superior type of flint that holds a sharper edge. Who knew?) Disable wooden tools entirely, and change the crafting recipe for stone tools so you can't make them out of cobblestone (this method creates the least fuss, as we don't need to create new Hardened Flint tools, just call them Stone Axe etc. like normal but have them crafted differently).
As far as the crafting table: I shy away from requiring leather for anything, because I tend to do Vegan runs where I don't deliberately kill any animals. (I'm not a Vegan IRL, I just find that if I can kill animals for food, staying fed is trivially easy.) I'd say it should be made from wooden slabs instead of wooden blocks ("planks"), but unfortunately you have to use the crafting bench to make wooden slabs in the first place.
Though... let's see. Since we managed (in one of outcastjack's builds) to get the process of chopping pieces off a trunk instead of getting the trunk all at once, then if the pieces you get with a Flint Hatchet or Stone Axe are wooden slabs instead of blocks, you could easily make the crafting bench out of slabs. And then you only start getting wooden blocks once you get an Iron Axe... or if there's a way to use pitch to stick slabs together to make blocks. That ensures that it's still not easy (at the start) to get blocks you can make a house out of.
Due to the limited crafting space, it is hard coming up with logical crafting recipes that fit both the space, progress curve, and available resources.
Yes, this seems to be the limitation we'd most need to work at.
The first thought that comes to mind is having two crafting benches, one that makes low-tech items and the other that makes higher-tech items, where the second one requires something like iron or... sandpaper? or something that makes for a better surface. Perhaps the grid for the lower-tech crafting bench would be 2x3 (or 3x2, whichever) instead of 3x3, but that means you can't make a pickaxe... unless we change the pickaxe recipe? And if the 2x3 grid is horizontal instead of vertical, we'd have to ensure that the recipes for all tools can easily be made in a flipped variant.
I don't know if this is a good idea or not. It seems to add complexity and I question its usefulness. But it's the first thing I came up with.

I like the idea of this mod, but it seems extremely challenging to make a few of these things (bark off trees, dynamic insta-smelting, sleeping near a campfire based on the cusor, etc) but it will probably be really cool once it's done. The only thing I don't like is the bamboo ideas, it seems really out of place. Good ideas though, I'd like to see this available soon
The bark-off-trees bit actually worked quite well in the pre-release versions outcastjack made for me. I liked how it felt to be chopping the trunk smaller and smaller and getting bits instead of a whole block. Plus being able to make a thin wall out of bark was kinda neat.
The bamboo things allow you to use existing vanilla resources for survival purposes, in ways that exist in real life... albeit the Japanese feel of the tatami mats and the walls does feel a bit odd, doesn't it? But being able to turn bamboo into walls of some sort allows for you to start on an island without any trees and still be able to make a house, as you would in real life if you had sufficient bamboo. Note that bamboo grows readily enough that it should require large amounts of bamboo to craft items, in comparison to small amounts of wood, and the stuff you can craft with bamboo should be a bit more limited than with wood.
I, too, am hoping to see a working model from my new coder soon. But we'll see. I am patiently impatient

Just dropping by to note that not this coming week, but the week after, I shall be heading off for an unknown number of weeks to a place with no internet access, to babysit my brother's kids. I hope I'll return to see more progress made on this mod. If questions need to be answered before progress can be made, now's the time to ask them.

Just skimming through this, and there actually seems to be a fair deal of content that either overlaps with, or would compliment what I'm trying to get done. For instance, a campfire to cook meats as an early alternative to the Brick Oven I have planned would work well (Especially if it burnt out and had to be replaced, hmm?). I wonder if we can get our respective modders talking, and either have cross-compatibility, or combine things into one mod.

I love these ideas. If there are any sprites left I would like to try.
Give me your best shot at a Macadamia Nut, Acorn, Dirt Ball, and Arrowhead.
So hey... update! andykuo1 is hard at work getting the dev version together, and I've been beta testing it a bit tonight. Still got some crashes over easy stuff, so not ready for release, but parts of it are working quite well and I thought I'd treat you guys to some screenshots. Let's see if this works:
You should be able to see how the bark panels are working (and how different bark panels connect seamlessly), plus the different sizes of wood for the tree core once the bark has been cut off. Right now when I cut the bark off a pine/spruce tree, it has oak wood inside, so we're still ironing out some bugs, but otherwise it's looking pretty exciting!

Now I'm wondering if anyone ever told me to check out TerraFirmaCraft. I swear I ran across that mod before (because the name is quite familiar), but either I can't have looked too hard at it, or it wasn't much up to date at the time, or maybe there was something about it that really turned me off... maybe my desire for a more complex beginning wasn't so strong a few years back... but TerraFirmaCraft is looking a lot like what I'm hoping for out of Roughin' It.
It's more complex, and I'd prefer something a bit simpler. But it's also got plenty of stuff that I'm hoping to see, already implemented from what I can tell.
I plan to try it soon, and see how it feels.

It's one that I've looked at in the past. I'd even say that it's pretty fun. The main disadvantage I've found is that it's basically a Total Conversion. Most of the Vanilla resources don't even exist in TFC, so many mods won't even work alongside it without extensive adjustments with Minetweaker or the like. Some mods are just outright incompatible. One of the things that got me looking for people to make my idea of a mod, initially, was actually just how many difficulty mods out there that did the kinds of things that interest me, like TFC, MITE, and BTW, all have huge incompatibility issues with most or all of the other mods out there. Even in Mine Fantasy, which is a little better than most, from what I've seen, there's still issues (aside from it just having poor documentation).

I wonder if a list could be made of those things that require alterations of the basics, and which could be handled just fine using regular Forge mods and proper compatibilities. Then the coder could split the code into the compatible side and the incompatible side, and players could choose whether or not to use the incompatible side.
I do like some of the things that I'm sure require more tinkering than the average Forge mod. Like messing with how many hearts I have to start (and gain over time, through experience or quest rewards) or how I move or something.

Changing hearts is actually quite easy. I've made a mod that levels hearts with your exp some time ago in my MC+ Mod Pack. It's called MC+ BattleHearts.

Huh. I could've sworn I replied to this already. Looks like the forum ate it.
Dealing with multiple mod teams whose progress ground to a halt and then disappeared entirely has left me with a zen-like ability to detach myself from the desire to see mods finished with any speed.
Yeah right. Still, it's given me an idea of patience, so no worries.
I like your BattleHearts mod. Any chance you could eventually do one about hunger bars as well?

I want to give you some ideas other mods have already done and Im not sure if they have already been submitted but I like you am looking for the same immersion.
1) Enviromine: I ****ing love this mod! I cannot get enough of it, this is a core mod for all my playthroughs. Adds Thirst, Temperature, Sanity and Air Quality as well as block physics.
2) Somnia: A more realistic sleeping mod. Allowing mobs to spawn and despawn and farms to grow through the night.
3) Spice Of Life: Eating the same foods over time gives less hunger.
4) Better Beginnings: Uses flint tools in a way I think your looking for, but I may be wrong. Also just punching a tree hurts you lol, stating you have durability as a tool would.
As before after reading your first post I skimmed a little, so please don't be offended or angry. Im merely trying to help out, thanks. Also Ive tried Better Than Wolves and to tell the truth I was not happy with it at all, just my opinion but its severely lacking in something that I cant even place a finger on...(Maybe fun idk).

Let's do some math.
1/3 = 0.333...
1/3 * 3 = 1
0.333... * 3 = 0.999...
1 = 0.999...
1 - 0.999... = 0.999... - 0.999...
0.0...1 = 0
0.0...1 * 10... = 0 * 10...
1 = 0

If it improves your proposal then it's all to the good
Ilcj20, please coordinate with andykuo1, who's currently in charge of the project. I have not heard how well it's going. If you can't get in touch with him in a timely manner, let me know.
My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!

Thanks and it looks very good.

Oh! And hello! I know I've been absent for some time, but this is not a "coming-back-to-full-modding-mode" message. I am just following up on the happenin's and the updates.
Satchels, Quivers, Turtles, Looms, Turnips, QuartzTools, and the list goes on...
