So lately I've been thinking about alternatives to the standard dynamic of fighting and killing monsters in games. It might be interesting if someone were to develop a mod for minecraft which would involve placating or charming mobs into leaving you alone or walking away for a set amount of time.
It would be nice if there was somewhat of a challenge to it still. You would still have to confront the mobs but instead of bashing them with a sword or shooting them with a bow... perhaps you could have a heart-shaped wand or a lovely little musical instrument that would fire out some kind of projectile magic or tune. After a certain number of hits on the mob hearts could appear above them and they would be placated.
Either that or perhaps even something more simple like a kind of food/bait you could set down to distract the mobs for a set amount of time while you explore around.
All in all it would be nice to see more alternative methods of dealing with monsters come about in games like Minecraft and the like. Just going for a tactic of killing everything that moves is something in games that is getting a little tired, I feel.
I don't really make mods nor would I ever see myself having time to do something like that, still... I thought perhaps I'd put this idea out there.
So, what you are suggesting is beastmaster magical girls. Not really the best idea, could see some improvement by takingout the Magical Grils part and just stay with Beastmaster.
So you object just based off the fact that the heart-wand idea reminds you too much of the "magical girl" genre? I honestly don't see what's wrong with that myself. I mean, not all of us want to be manly-tough-super-rugged-man-men in our games. Sometimes it's nice to frolic through fields of flowers and hearts lulling all the spiders and zombies into a dreamy love trance as you prance on by! hee hee!
Edit: Oh and yeah... I'm NOT really looking for a "BeastMaster" type of mod here. There seem to already be mods where you tame the mobs to be your servants. This is more of an idea of having non-violent/non-lethal means of getting out of conflict with the mobs... but leaving them still autonomous creatures who don't suddenly become some kind of "captured Pokemon" for you to own.
I was more thinking of something similar to the Monster Collection manga. The main character is a mage and a Beastmaster/Summoner. While violence is still present, she has a great friendship with her monsters. And they are autonomous creatures. Read it, you will see what I meant.
I haven't read it, perhaps I will at some point (since I do enjoy reading comics, yes) but it's still not really what I'm getting at in suggesting this mod idea.
Like I said, this isn't about gaining companionship with the monsters as much as just having a method of placating them. I just feel it would be nice to have a mod that gives you a method for turning aggressive mobs into passive ones... although, while I noted before that there were mods where you could tame monsters... apparently the one I was thinking of (Vilecraft) is long out of date.
On the note of making mobs passive though... I did discover recently that you could placate spiders every now and again by placing down tons of torches (asides from the obvious tactic of waiting till sunrise).
Oh, and here... since you like comics, I quickly drew something graphically representing my "vision" for this mod request... lol...
Hello! Saying hi to this forum thread 10 years later to tell you that I absolutely LOVE this mod idea!
It's exactly what I've been looking for in so many games: make enemies friendly without making them your mindless slaves. I've always tried being a pacifist in games which is why I love Undertale/Deltarune so much. I'm also getting into DND recently and I've been playing bards 24/7; the idea of bringing a guitar to a battlefield and choosing to use your quick wits and charisma as an alternative to combat is SO fascinating and fun to me.
I think a game that almost perfectly satisfies my craving is Rain World, you play as this little slugcat in a rich and diverse ecosystem that doesn't care about you specifically. There's reputation systems and such and my favorite thing to do is give hostile lizards food and watch them carry it off to their own little "safe dens". If you feed it enough times it will follow you at times but it will ABSOLUTELY run off to do its own thing sometimes and recognize you when you run into them. If you're friendly to enough lizards and don't kill them they won't attack you anymore unless threatened.
Listen, I am NOT a very good coder but I am an artist and a dreamer. You give some very solid ideas, so I'll give you mine:
You can "pacify" hostile mobs in many different ways: Deception, Distraction, Persuasion, Exhaustion, Hypnosis, Assistance (feel free to add on to this)
Deception is maybe by wearing disguises that make you look or seem like a mob or another mob they're allied with, to counteract this have some mobs have a chance to spawn with the ability to see through disguises.
Distraction is from your idea of using bait, maybe have mobs that only target you specifically be fooled by a decoy of the player; and have the others seek their own food sources. This would probably only work on low-intelligence creatures, but you can bait them into walking into deadly traps or just ones meant to capture which leads to....
Persuasion, let them know you mean no harm by either letting them go, unequipping weapons, or giving them a truce gift.
Exhaustion after draining all their energy into attacking you. This is mainly for minibosses with heavy attacks and other exhausting abilities. If they use it enough times and realize the player is just dodging all of them they might just sit down to see what else you do. This is a good time to Persuade or do other things as well.
Hypnosis, use magic to charm monsters. This might be the heart-wand idea but one that uses energy/resources or the musical projectile that requires skill/rhythmic precision. Maybe it also just puts the monster to sleep instead of fully-pacifying them, Would be interesting to have you do something like trapping them while they're still unconscious. And finally:
Assistance by helping, perhaps by healing them or helping get rid of or also pacifying an enemy they're facing.
I would also like to add the idea that maybe some mobs have a VERY rare chance of spawning docile. I'm also thinking of how this mod could be compatible with other mods, since they also introduce new monsters I sincerely want to be friends with.

UPDATE: I just started a mod (currently in Alpha) that lets you pacify ANY mob from any MOD using a lute. I plan to add everything I said here but in the meantime it only makes them friendly unless you attack them
