I'm sure many of you are familiar with the ever popular Zeppelin Mod. Unfortunately, the topic has been locked because it's creator (Blakmajik) has let it become defunct. He's been busy with real life stuff and hasn't updated in quite a long time. He was having trouble coding it with the new single player server functions. As far as we can tell he hasn't worked on it since the thread was locked. That's been quite a long time now.
We can't blame him for being busy with real life stuff; what we *can* do is try to find an alternative. There's nothing quite like it out there. So we need a volunteer to work on a replacement. My goal for this thread is to raise enough awareness/support that we can get a talented modder to work on the issue and get a new one running.
Suggested Features:
*Flying, Floating, Submersible, and hopefully movement along the ground
*Allow the player to build the craft, any size that their pc can handle
*Easy to use controls
*Some kind of collision detection
*Entity damage for the ship so that it can be broken
*Redstone current and items functional on ships
*Players move relative to the ship, not the world when they move
*Ship doesn't need to be aligned to grid to fly
*HerrGohlem: Allow ships to transport chests while saving their states (and allowing access in flight)
*Weegeemang: A way to dock two ships
*Pbtenchi: An engine control block requiring materials that balance the mod for those playing survival
*Nerdboy64: Number of engine blocks determine ships power
Please, if you have any suggestions for the mod post them- I'll add them to this post. If you support this idea and want to see this functionality in the game again *please* post to keep this thread alive. The only way this will happen is if we keep awareness up and find someone.

I just learned that the code for Ships and Boats is available for people to work on as well (see their thread on these forums). This would be an acceptable alternative to the Zeppelin Mod if anyone would rather take over that.
I have a suggestion: piston docking. When an outstretched piston (sticky or normal) in a Zeppelin craft collides with another Zeppelin craft, the smaller craft will connect to the other craft, effectively "docking" with the bigger ship. Retracting the pistons will undock the smaller ship and allow it to fly away. This idea would let people have docking bays in their big-bad-ships, but would also let tinier ships (such as shuttles or escape pods) depart from larger ships.
Maybe a good place to start would be to contact Blakmajik if nobody has yet. Maybe he would be willing to relinquish the mod to someone with time to work on it. Just a thought.

Good ideas all, adding some to my post. Ships and Boats was a *very* cool mod, and in some ways much more impressive than Zeppelin Mod. Unfortunately, it, too is now defunct. Sir Entropy hasn't posted on these forums since November. If anyone wants to take over THAT code instead of starting from scratch, they have a code repository that anyone can work on (link to it on their forum post).

I would like to see this as well. I used to love the Zeppelin mod and was sad to see it die. While I am a modder, I don't have anything NEAR the skill required to recreate Blakmajik's work.
One idea for balancing the mod: Have "engine" blocks that can move a certain number of other blocks in a vessel. If you don't have enough engines, your craft won't move. If you have more than enough, you can get more speed out of it. For example, let's say your ship is made of a total of 500 blocks, and each engine can handle 100 blocks. Five engines will get you minimum velocity, six or more will make it faster.

I too would like to see the zeppelin mod taken up by someone. At tye current moment i am learning to code and it will be a while before i'm able to code at blakmajik's level. I would be more than willing to take it up but i would need source code so i'm able to see how it was made. When i learn to code in java, i will see if i can update it.

Indeed, it was an awesome mod and truly brought a lot to Minecraft. To be entirely honest, I think the devs could grab this idea and run with it and *vastly* improve MC.
Maybe you should try posting something in the mod requests forum so modders that are looking for a project can jump on top of this one, because it would be quite nice to see a zeppelin mod like this for 1.4.7

Well I can tell you this, it won't be ready by 1.4.7. General gets a lot more interest than the mod request forum (one of the deadest sub-forums on this site) but it's possible we might have more luck finding a modder there. The unfortunate truth is that the Mod Request sub-forum is full of juveniles with silly niche ideas for mods that makes modders so sick they'd rather die than visit it.
Well submerisble isn't really possible, because of the way water and entities work.
But yes, Zepplin was one of my very favorite mods, and i miss it quite a lot.
Figured I'd mention this real quick. Submersibles aren't impossible, they just don't work without modifying some more extensive stuff. It probably won't be possible with plugins, but it is with a mod.

I was lucky enough to stumble onto Zeppelin Mod *just* as blakmajik let it die, so I've never gotten to use it. My girlfriend and I built this huuuuuge world full of ships and planes and we were gonna battle to the death in them when he updated it. And then the thread got locked. So now we're here.
