I often find myself restarting my worlds, just for the sake of redoing everything. In one day, I seem to go from no house and wooden tools to a mansion and diamond tools, or stacks of iron tools. It gets boring. This is usually how my crafting goes when starting:
Use my hand to get wood
Make a crafting table and a wooden pickaxe
Mine stone and get a stone pickaxe
Find iron and make an iron pickaxe
It's all too quick! The idea of this mod is to slow down the game, but also keep it exciting, and have goals to work towards. It adds a brand new skill to the game: crafting.
Crafting
The main principle of crafting is progress. You have to fulfill a certain requirement before being able to move on. To make matters easier, it would introduce tiers. To advance through the tiers, you would have to level up by making tools. For example, you have to make ten of all wooden items before being able to advance to stone tools.
Tiers
Tiers are levels of tools. Here is a list from worst to best in vanilla gameplay:
Wooden tools
Stone tools
Iron tools
Diamond tools
However, because of the immense gap between iron and diamond, and the few materials to use, it would introduce the following:
Bronze tools
Adamant tools
So, the improved list is:
Wooden tools (10)
Stone tools (8)
Bronze tools (7)
Iron tools (5)
Adamant tools (3)
Diamond tools (1)
The numbers represent how many of each tool you would need to make in order to progress to the next tier. So, for example, you would have to make ten wooden pickaxes, ten wooden axes, and ten wooden swords before being able to make stone tools. Swords don't count, as they get their own special abilities.
Swords
Swords now possess a special ability, and that is to be encrusted with jewels. However, there's no system that requires you to encrust a certain amount of swords before advancing tier. It depends on the level of sword you can make. Each jewel is specific to a tier. Encrusted swords also have special abilities, like the power to freeze mobs.
Jewels
Key: Corresponding tier - Jewel
Wooden - None
Stone - None
Bronze - None
Iron - Topaz
Adamant - Jade
Diamond - Emerald
Abilities
I need some suggestions for abilities. If you guys like the ideas so far, please help me out and comment below! Leave your thoughts!
I'd like it to where gems (Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald and Topaz) are very rare, at which only one is found in a deposit, but can be used as a sort of instant enchantment to provide Cold/Fire/Shock/Poison damage to certain mobs. It could be done on swords of all makes. The process would require:
1. 1 Sword (Wood up to Diamond)
2. 1 Gem
3. 1 Gold ingot for the faceting
As for the level between Iron and Diamond, I'd like to see Steel introduced, where you take the iron ore, and mix it with Coke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coke_(fuel)) after which you smelt to make Steel. Keep Bronze how you've got it.
Abilities (top of my head):
Double Jump
Cliff Climbing (Able to jump and climb up a two block high ledge)
Double Tap with Bow (Fires 2 arrows at once)
Actually, I'm all for mods that make Minecraft more RPGish.

Good idea for the gems. I was thinking about steel. Not sure how that could be smoothly incorporated into the game though.

Nice ability ideas also.
