Well hey! Looks like two coders are interested. I'm discussing this with them via PMs and we should have some news pretty soon about who'll be our new Chief Coder.
miniboz12 has officially left the project so he can concentrate on his college classes; we are sad to see him go but wish him the best, and thank him for his work in the early stages of this project.

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
That would actually be pretty nice. The coders seemed all interested but now there's just silence. Sigh.
Anyway, yeah, if we want to pause this until after your exams are done, that'd be fine.
Note: The new snapshot has added emeralds. This makes me glad that we're avoiding emeralds; there shouldn't be any overlap. It's also an indication that the vanilla game might eventually get a wider variety of gems and/or ores, which is very nice to think about.
Let me know if there's anything I should be doing to clarify the details of this project, or help solve problems, or something. I'm fairly busy with other projects (including making a greenhouse), but I'll see what I can do.

And again we appear to be on extended hiatus. I've had some encouraging remarks from TWell, a coder for one of my other mods, but I don't know if anything will come of that or not.
If anyone would like to pick this idea up and run with it, by all means do! I'm not stingy with my ideas. The important part is for the content to be created and released to the community in some fashion, so players can enjoy it

hey guys just an idea i was reading i don't intend to be helping just giving an idea that poped into me but you could possible make a gem plant or a new gem arrow. a gem plant could be created by mixing a few gems with wheat seeds. as for the arrow i know it's a generic idea no body uses but the arrow has been neglected lately so i was thinking you could make a new type of arrow.
remember i don't not want to be apart of the team just a few ideas i came up with.

Brainstorming is always a good thing, and I welcome it.
I recently found out that Obsidian is a really sharp substance than IRL has been used to make knives and arrowheads. It's actually used to make surgical scalpels in certain places because the blade is so much finer and less jagged than a metal blade! So now I'm rethinking my earlier reactions to "make tools out of Obsidian" threads.
But anyway, yeah, it'd be possible to make gems into arrowheads. I suppose. It does go quite in a direction I wasn't planning for, but if you did, you'd probably have a separate ability for each type of arrow. In a tabletop game I play, I can buy all sorts of arrows, from blunt ones (that do more damage to skellies) to whistling arrows (alert people that I'm in trouble or lost) to dye arrows (keep track of a bad guy) to tanglefoot arrows (trip the enemy). It might be possible to use gems in this fashion... albeit it gives them magical factors that I don't really want.
As for a gem plant, that's more of a mod thing; and while this is a mod, it's mostly supposed to stick to stuff that I think would fit in vanilla Minecraft. But I encourage you to bring this suggestion up to other modders who've been making gem mods, because I'm pretty sure it'd fit in a few I've seen, and it wouldn't be any crazier than stuff they're already doing.

I'm glad you think so! Are you offering your services or just stating a fact?

ok well i was only trying to help btw keep the mod going up seems good that there's hard working modders comming up with a big mod can't wait for you to finish it.
I don't mean to discourage you; if you have any other ideas then please bring them to the table.
I'd love to say this mod was busy being built, but that's not the case anymore. We're hoping to get another coder eventually (and my chief coder from the ZooCraftia mod is willing to try once we finish ZC - but that's a long time in coming). For right now, we're basically in limbo.
I'd love to see this mod actually get built, and I'd like to see some of the aspects adopted into Minecraft proper. I don't know how likely it is that we'll see either one.

Another possible gem could be gypsum (either clear or yellow). In addition to the normal crystal uses, you could cook it in a furnace to receive 2 plaster powder. Craft 4 plaster powders in to a block to receive a plaster block.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Gypsum would be a fine addition to a mining mod, but I wonder if we haven't got way too many white-ish decorative blocks already, what with nether quartz.
By the by, I've got a coder interested in at least part of this mod. Here's hoping something comes of it!
Anyone with more ideas, please do chime in

Hey! We've got a new coder and a new thread to match. Looks like we've got a working model (though I haven't had the chance to test it out yet).
Note that this is not the huge mod we brainstormed on this thread; it is just the gems part. Gems to dig up and craft into gem blocks, gem panels, gem "carpets," and possibly gem slabs and gem stairs. Probably also the functional corundum part.
The rest of the stuff we brainstormed will either wait for another mod, or be a module connected to this. Not sure yet. But hey, progress!
