It is important to know beforehand that this topic is still not finished if talking about the images. All the ideas are there, but I'm still working on the textures (I lost some because of a virus >.<). Thanks for your attention. :smile.gif: Also, the models are made with Google Skecthup!

Introduction
Hello, Minecraftforum browser.
This is a mod request for a mod that adds biome specific birds to the game. Wouldn't it be awesome to have several birds around us in the game? You might be thinking already: 'Mo'Creatures adds birds!'. True. But not the kind of birds I mean. I want birds that add a new unique atmosphere to every kind of biome. These birds could be of some use too of course. Taming will also be an important part of this mod request. Some may dislike this but I also want the birds to be like if as Mojang added them themselves. You will see what I mean with this in the texturing. Thanks for reading the introduction and I hope you like the ideas.

Taming
Taming one of these birds will be done by hatching the egg that you obtain as a possible drop from the birds.
Once hatched the bird will follow you when right-clicked (by walking) and not despawn naturally. They can still get killed though.
To hatch an egg I have come up with the following possibilities (so ONE of these will be a part of the mod):
- Putting the egg in an Incubator block just as in the Aether mod one that is powered by regular torches instead of Ambrosium Torches.
- Putting the egg in an Incubator block that checks if there is a source of heat nearby to start working (like torches, fire, lava).
- Putting the egg in a chest that now checks if there is a source of heat nearby to start working (like torches, fire, lava).
Once hatched the bird will come out and see you as it's mom/dad. It will follow you until right-clicked. To make it follow you again just right-click again. They will not despawn.
Keeping the birds has a price. You need to feed them seeds, fish or other meat to keep it satisfied or it will flee!
It will take 3 full Minecraft days without feeding for it to flee.
Feeding Table:
Seagull: (raw) Fish or other (raw) meat (except rotten flesh) Owl: Seeds or raw meat (except rotten flesh) Woodpecker: Seeds Crane: Seeds or raw fish Eagle: (raw) meat Vulture: (raw) meat Ostrich: Seeds or melon slices Penguin: raw Fish Dodo: Melon slices
Birds will only eat once every Minecraft day! So it won't accept any food when fed on the same day.
Because Eggs are a pain to obtain: All tamed birds will always drop the corresponding eggs when killed.
Tamed Bird Abilities
Once tamed all birds have a special ability that will aid you in survival or exploration. This makes them usefull besides giving some drops.
Seagull:Will randomly collect fish for you. This will then be placed into your inventory while it's following you. Owl:When fed it will cough up bones for you to collect. Woodpecker:Right click with a log in your hand on the bird and it will convert it into 12 sticks (so 4 additional ones!) Crane: Eagle:Right-click with a string* to ride it and fly around! Seeing it's very hard to get an egg, it's not overpowered IMO. Vulture:Farm animals drop a higher amount of meat when killed, when the bird is following you. Ostrich:Right-click with a string* to ride it and run around! Penguin:Right-click it in the water to hang on and swim very fast! Dodo:Will randomly collect fruit(apple, golden apple (rare), melon slices, melon block) and mushrooms for you. This will then be placed into your inventory while it's following you.
* I thought a saddle would be weird so I figured if you put a string around the bird's body to hang on to, that would make more sense.
Although I have to admit that some of these ideas are kinda cliché...I couldn't find any better uses. If you know any better abilities, please let me know.
Future Plans
- Images for all birds (most important atm).
- Make the OP less boring.
- Special eggs only obtainable through a certain progress.
- These special eggs could lead to 2 birds I wanted to add but didn't find a place for: Magpie and Hawk.
- Improvements suggested by the readers.
Thanks for reading this post and I hope you enjoyed it. I would love some feedback from you guys. Also, if you have some improvements or additional ideas, please let me know them :smile.gif:
If you are a modder and see potential in this being a mod, please PM me.
U fast bro. I know it's a mod request and all, but as I make these requests I never actually expect someone to make it. It's fun enough, making these models and textures. :smile.gif: Thanks for the response.
Edit: That doesn't mean I don't want it to be made though. That would defy the purpose.
The Seagull looks awesome. The concept sounds neat. And I like several of the bird types you chose. I hope you'll manage to get a full mod made (by you or others, either way).
Please try to make sure that, like with Mo' Creatures, you can set individual spawn rates. Someone might want one type of bird active but not others, or might dislike one certain type of bird.
Make Seagulls go after any food you drop on the ground. Some other birds might do likewise.
You could make bird nests, and the birds would do certain things if you got close to their nests (e.g., seagulls would attack you, whereas some birds would just try to lure you away). You should be able to find their eggs in their nests.
...would be kinda neat if this varied by season, but meh.
My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
This sounds great! I always wanted seagulls. But maybe instead of a Crane, it's a Heron instead? I think those are more commonly found in swamps.
Yeh i might change it, it was kinda hard to find a bird specific to the swamp...it has so much freaking birds! But as you are working on the swamp mod, I will take this request seriously :tongue.gif:
To the People that are considering making this (I got 2 people already): I just changed it in OP, but these models aren't made with Techne, but In Google Sketchup. So...you still have to make the model yourself. I do have the textures though :smile.gif:
Awaiting updates :smile.gif: the current models look neat and I'm looking forward to seeing more.
Note: Consider making the owl's head separate from its body, because owls are infamous for being able to turn their head at extreme angles. I don't think you could convincingly get a nearly-upside-down turn out of a cube, but you could at least make it look around behind itself.

I've been referring people from other threads to take a look at this one. I hope you haven't given up on it. I keep coming back hoping to see new pictures.

The other idea I have is when you somehow tame it. When you do, you can craft a blow whistle like this
And it flies nearby you, and when you blow your whistle, it comes and sits on your shoulders (or head if its impossible)
