Lucky for you, theres a mod like this! Pam's Mods (Includes things like Melon Spawn, Harvestcraft, Wee! Flowers and more!)
If you are directing that "lucky for you" my way, then thank you for thinking to spread the word (though you should always include a link when you do this), but I'm well aware of Pam's stuff. I think highly of her, I actually use HarvestCraft, I thoroughly recommend her, and I was humbled to make it on her list of forumites who can comment on her threads without driving her up a wall, but if her mod fully overlapped what I'd like to do with Moontown here (or if I'd managed to get that experience with a combination of her mod and another existing mod) then I'd've formally closed down this thread and just moved on.
So, clearly, it didn't. Doesn't.
When I talk about a mod that is based on Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, I really do mean specific to that game... or, well, with a few tweaks to make it more appealing to me personally (and with any luck to other players as well). I keep thinking about starting up a new game on BtN and what stops me in my tracks is a combination of factors, most of which would be eliminated by a conversion to Minecraft.
I have seen more than one mod based on other games in the Harvest Moon line; I have seen (and played) a custom map that copies the original SNES map almost perfectly (enough to make me squeee) and plans to add in maps from more HM games later; I have seen, played, and enjoyed a variety of mods that add in plants, animals, building materials, and even villagers.
So far, nothing has actually put the whole experience together for me. Hence, this mod. Even if it takes a long time to attract the talent I need to get it running, I'm going to keep hoping (while I run around doing other things and not think about it too much).
If I can get the crops, growth style, recipes and food, Harvest-Moon-style tools and ores, and appropriate farm animals put together, then the major work will be done with the first module. After that, even if we can't get decent villagers and a plot going, at least the basics will be done; I could move into a Minecraft village or, let's see, Minecraft Comes Alive or Millénaire. I'd even be okay with a mod that did 80% of the above and left out one or more things (e.g. the HM-style tools and ores). However, I have a strong aversion to mods that add the stuff I want plus five hundred other things I'm not looking for, which is why a mod like Mo' Creatures is not a solution for me (and Metallurgy just barely squeaks by... grudgingly).

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
Kilyle, have you heard of Stardew Valley? I occasionally check this thread because I too am a very big fan of HM:BtN, so I thought it proper to at least share the news of SV here. When I discovered it I got really excited, and I'm sure you will to.
The game was recently Greenlighted on Steam and isn't available to play yet, but when it does get released, it might be what you are looking for. Having said that, though, it's still a fundamentally different game than Minecraft so the merit in this possible mod may not be diminished.
Thank you for letting me know! I hadn't heard of this yet. It's in a style I enjoy (retro) and looks like it'll be fun. I hope you can save it more often than just daily.
Though you're right that it doesn't seem to have the remake-the-world feel of Minecraft, and therefore wouldn't scratch that itch I'm trying to scratch.

Not in any way a farming game, but the upcoming 7 Days to Die seems like an awesome fusion of Minecraft and Left 4 Dead. All the times my dad and I have commented that Minecraft should be more like L4D or L4D should be more like Minecraft, I think we were envisioning this game.
At any rate, I mostly dropped by to wish y'all a Merry Christmas and to hope that the new year finds you full of energy and optimism.
The new flowers are... interesting choices. I'm of mixed feelings. It does liven up the world a little (though the flower forest feels very like a mod, and not the sort of mod I'd choose to download, either). Higher grasses are nice, and the upgrade to fishing is a welcome addition. I'm hoping for more content additions soon, though.

Hello, I am a rather large Harvest Moon fan who would like to see this mod turn out! I don't think there is much I can help with, but if you have anything you need a hand with, I would love to help!
I my self am a big harvest moon fan. Though I have only played a few of the games. I my self would love to see a mod that brings harvest mood to minecraft. I did not know that you had a request for a harvest mood mod already so just last week I had put in my own request to have some one make a harvest moon mod. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2177041-request-looking-for-modders/
My idea was not to get so detailed about the harvest moon game but to bring a bit more to the farming aspect of minecraft with out going wild and adding a ton of things. I am just glad that there are others that have similar ideas as me. OH! while I am posting to one of your posts I though I would say I like your roughing it mod idea.

I am not a coder or texture maker. I am just your average minecrafter with my own ideas on how to improve my own minecraft experience and maybe others (if they like them) as well.
Thanks for the offer, Azoroth; let me know what talents you bring to the table. Then go enjoy your holidays, because I can't think of anything that needs doing before New Year... and until we get coders doing their thing again, the rest is kind of at a standstill.
Though if you've artistic talent, you could start making some of the textures/skins and maybe figure out how to get some screenshots (using texture packs to mock up what some of this could look like).
MrClayMinner, thanks for the support! I gave your thread a quick look but unfortunately I can't go over it more right now. You're right, a lot of it overlaps mine in spirit if not in implementation.
There are at least a couple Harvest Moon mods out there already; I would recommend you look up RuneCraftory for starters, and there's a Harvest Moon custom map that recreates the villages from more than one game. Can't think of the other HM-specific mods right now, but I got a fairly close approximation by using Pam's Harvestcraft and the Metallurgy mod. It's not quite scratching my itch, which is why I proposed this mod, but certainly if you want a more Harvest-Moony feel to Minecraft, go download Harvestcraft.

This looks really good! I just looked over the first page and then this one, so I might have missed something but is there some form of a release?
Unfortunately, no. This project has either gone on hiatus or died; I'm hoping the former but fearing the latter. I am very open to new coders coming in and giving it a go, in case anyone is interested. (We did get some graphics work done and a fair amount of pre-planning, some ideas on how the story could go and how the characters would work, so you wouldn't be starting from scratch.)
If you're after the Harvest Moon experience minus the characters and storyline, I recommend Pam's HarvestCraft and perhaps the Metallurgy mod. You can also find mods that increase the frequency of villages and/or put them in a wider variety of biomes with more interesting house shapes. And I know there's at least one mod out there, one I haven't tried, that allows you to interact with villagers and/or monsters in a talking sort of way, but I don't know what all has been done with that concept.

I'm interested in reviving this mod. I'm a new modder though and will probably take a while to get progress. I was curious though, where are all the sprites that were created for this stored? Hopefully I'll be back soon with progress.
It's been a while since I've thought about this mod, so I might just have forgotten, but I don't think we ever had a really centralized location for resources. Probably the best shot is to go back through this thread and find the pics posted by the texture artists (I recall Twanneh ripping a bunch of Harvest Moon item sprites for us, and Icalasari made some stuff).
If you really want to take this project on, you have a choice to make:
Take some of my ideas and run off and make your own project, separate from this proposal. I don't in any way mind you doing this; I am very free with my ideas, and like to see people create independent mods based on my ideas.
Try to follow my proposal as closely as you can, thus becoming the coder for the actual Moontown Mod (or whatever we eventually might change that name to). I'd be involved* but bear in mind that I don't have the time or the energy to be as active as I was when I started this thread. That might change but there's no guarantee.
*I forget which title I decided on, but Producer is the general idea. The person basically in charge of the mod, who sets the direction and the overall goals, to whom the Coder and the Artists answer to. I'm pretty easy-going and patient, but I tend to have strong ideas about what should and what should not be in the mod (because ideally I want to use the mod myself, too). But my job has traditionally been to sort through the ideas created by the team and the community (aka fans) and figure out the best way to realize them within the limitations of the mod itself.
Anyway, I'm not sure how much I'll be around (sometimes I'm on frequently, other times not for weeks), but I look forward to seeing your work

I could probably pitch in, I'm a pretty experienced developer, but don't really have the time to put in a full time effort. So I could maybe refactor some code here and there. Although I would be more than happy to try to help you learn Java, so you can go at it yourself. It seems like you've got a really strong vision for this so I think that'd probably be the best way to go.
Unfortunately I don't have the time to pick up a new language right now -- I'm busy with projects outside Minecraft, which is partly why I'm not as active on the forums lately. I also have a couple nephews to introduce to programming, so while it's conceivable that I might learn Java and pass it on to them at the same time, it's more likely I would choose a different programming language for their first go (having worked with them in GML a bit before, and considering Python (if I recall) if we end up getting the Raspberry Pi we were planning on getting... at their age I was already coding bits of games in GW-Basic and/or QBasic, but they don't yet have the patience to really learn text coding, let alone self-teach as I did, so it's slow going).
Looks like izzlefrizlle has dibs on being Main Coder, so if you want to contribute you can coordinate with him for right now. If you guys end up with any decent start or progress, post updates here (preferably with files attached, though notes alone would be acceptable), and if you need graphics just post what you're after and we'll see if we can get an artist involved again.
Like I said, I may not be very active in checking back on this project right now, but I'll see what I can do to help.

Just an idea, did you ever consider making a mod pack with map for this instead. It would require a lot less time and coding if you do so. Also I think that you could get pretty close to the main setup with TerraFirmaCraft as a base mod. If you don't like the mod pack idea I would still like to suggest maybe making a map for the mod to help players better enjoy your mod. I look forward to seeing how this finishes. Good luck.
Can you expand on this idea a bit? I get part of what you mean but not all of it.
The idea of making a mod for part of what we want, and having a specific map set up to play out the rest, that much is interesting, and something I never considered. I will think that over.
I haven't looked at TerraFirmaCraft, but in general I find that the mods that have enough breadth to cover the elements I want also have way too much extra stuff, and having huge mods is a turn-off for my Minecraft experience. I've thought before that getting Harvest Moon out of Minecraft, if minus the NPCs and story/plot, would be as simple as Metallurgy + HarvestCraft.

I like the NPC and story/plot idea and to do that you might need to still make your own mod, but for raising animals and crops as well as collecting supplies can be done with other mods with extra unwanted content disabled. Doing so could save stress and time, and could allow for others to deiced from different mods to cover those areas.
Just an idea I got while reading this and thought I would bring it up.
That is true, and the existence of good mods like HarvestCraft and Runecraftory do make it less likely that this mod will get finished (since the niche it has been planned to fill isn't exactly empty). It would be possible to turn the plot elements and the NPCs into their own mod designed to work with HarvestCraft, or perhaps a somewhat modified version of HarvestCraft, and maybe Metallurgy as well.
Still, I kind of wanted to see the particular watering mechanics, and tool upgrades, and such, to make it feel a lot more like Back to Nature itself, to waken that nostalgic feeling like I'm walking around a 3d version of the game with full manipulation of the world and full camera control. Not sure how I feel about giving up on that dream and just accepting a quasi-acceptable hodge-podge in its place.
I mean, I love HarvestCraft so much that when I found out that Pam had gotten a Patreon account, I weighed my meager finances and added "support Pam's work" to my tiny games budget. That doesn't mean it hits at everything I'd like to do with Minecraft and the potential for its crops. And a major part of that is that the Harvest-Moon-via-Minecraft that I want to play has a tightly controlled set of crops and foods that don't break my immersion, whereas HarvestCraft has... yogurt, and ice cream, and smoothies of just about every fruit in the game (come to think of it, why not just one "smoothie" item that is made using any fruit you like? hmm), and tons of other stuff that I can't see existing in the Middle Ages, and Medieval Fantasy really is the sort of headspace I use while playing Minecraft.
So yeah, it's more than likely that the combination of "skilled enough to make this mod" and "interested enough to follow this Harvest Moon dream to the final product" aren't going to combine in the same person, and this mod won't ever see real development. But I guess that's just something that time will prove, one way or the other.

I actually think apple should be the normal berry thing that you randomly find Cant remember its name, and the golden apples should be power berrys.
Plus you guy need to keep up the good work I would love to see this as A mod. I am a harvest moon fan
That much would be doable via texture pack and maybe some small mod to give a sort of level-up upon consumption of a golden apple. Or like, maybe Hardcore Questing Mode, since you can get additional lives by consuming hearts, so that might work.
As for this mod... it's dead, it really is. Maybe there will be a zombie version someday, but I wouldn't count on it. It was a good idea while it lasted and I'm glad for the experience, and I don't blame anyone who was involved (life happens, and distractions happen), but they're not around anymore and unless someone else comes by to claim this project, it's just not going to happen.

Right now it's still a private pack that I'm troubleshooting, and I could really use someone skilled in mod packs and/or config files to help me go over the details, because I'm having a fair number of troubling errors even though the base set does seem to work together without crashing (much). I'd like to get rid of the errors and then tweak recipes but I can't even get a replacement Waypoint recipe working (I managed to erase the original recipe, which no longer works, but still shows up in NEI, but it didn't add my replacement recipe, so now there's no way to get them at all).
