Is this going to be the next Aether? Hopefully. Looks stinkin' awesome. Totally watching this thread.

If you'd like to help me out, I think the best thing you could do is check out my YouTube channel, even more than voting up my reputation, though that'd be nice too.
I was thinking that perhaps a herochat variant can be used for ship intercoms and local comm nets. Any thoughts?

Sir, you may be able to blow up the world twenty times over, but I... I know the physics to tear this universe apart in a heartbeat. I think I win this argument.
I'd like to watch the development (and maybe help a little bit) of this mod. I have very little experience with Java, but I could possibly fix some errors.
I'd like to watch the development (and maybe help a little bit) of this mod. I have very little experience with Java, but I could possibly fix some errors. I'd just like to look at the current source code.
Traveling in space should be a bit like a birds eye view of sailing. its just that the rendering and constant moving of so many huge objects would crash-if not explode-most computers.
If the inter-stellar travel does this, then you could replace the giant ship with a small sprite that lacks much detail to save on memory and power. This would make the hyperspace server not need very much power, and could be a parasite off of another server, decreasing the cost of running this mod for those of us that rent servers.
So we are clear that the space block will spread like Classic lava or water but in all directions? It should only spread if it has an unbroken path to a space spawn block, which would be placed randomly in space and would look the same as the flowing space. This would be so that when there is a hole in your ship, space would flow in freely like reality. The reason it would need a path to the space spawner blocks in space is because if you closed the hole in your ship, space shouldn't be able to enter your ship, so it won't spread. The space that is already in your ship will stay in place unless to replace it with air. Air spawn blocks will be in the atmosphere and work like space spawn blocks. If you are in space, you can use compressed air tanks to refill the room because it will act like an air spawn block until the amount of air it holds runs out. To remove the need for tanks in every room, an air duct would go to every room. This leads in to my idea that we have a space detector block. Similar to the water detector block in the finite liquid mod, it puts out a redstone signal when it is in contact from any side with space. This would be used so that if every room has one, you can have it connected to pistons so that when space gets in the room, pistons would quickly slam every door and air vent shut so that a single breach in the hull of a ship wouldn't instantly kill everyone inside. The space detector block would be able to tell if it is connected to a space spawner block just like the space block, so that it will know when the hole in the wall is patched so that it can reopen the doors and air vents to let air fill the room again.

People can be whatever they want on the internet. I wonder why so many of them chose to be stupid.

First off; use the "enter" key occassionally so that I don't have uber block of text to read through; I read it all, others would skip over.
Second, if a rooms been vented to space, filling it full of O2 is stupid unless you've plugged the breach or closed the door that's CAUSED the breech in the first place.
The idea has merit though, if we can come up with a way to plug the hole automatically (either through some sort of self sealing hull or through emergency force fields like in Star Trek).
The thing about a breech tripping doors also has merit, but it'd be a pain in the ass to code. Also, if a single breech seals off a entire section of the ship, not just the compartment thats been holed, its gonna be a little easy for a attacker to cripple a large ship; you'd merely need to punch holes in certain areas, and then the ships crew is stuck behind doors and bulkheads.
furthermore, how are you supposed to patch the hole if the detector block has sealed off the room in the first place, except through doing a EVE that during a battle is akin to suicide anyway? And face it, some rooms up against the pressure hull of a ship you WANT access to, even if its open to space; Weapons batteries come to mind. Sensor Bays, Shield Generators, Torpedo Bays, hell, even Life pods.
If the inter-stellar travel does this, then you could replace the giant ship with a small sprite that lacks much detail to save on memory and power. This would make the hyperspace server not need very much power, and could be a parasite off of another server, decreasing the cost of running this mod for those of us that rent servers.
Server? Server??? SERVER?!?!?!
No. Last time I checked (and as this is my mod, I check a lot [not to mention that I have the final say on how the mod goes]) we were going to have ships transfer to the server where they are going to as soon as they enter hyperspace, then wait in hyperspace until the "travel time" is up.
Also, a question directed to Creator4 if he is reading: I really like the sounds from Spore; do you think that you could use some of their ideas for INSPIRATION?
Also, as we have some debate about the space block: Near space (within 10,000 km or so of a planet) will use whatever block you guys eventually come up with, allowing you to build space stations (you can still build them in space, but will need a station core block for it to hold air).
Deep space (everything between near space on different planets) is like the "blue void", there is nothing to render except empty space. Although this means that you can't build in space, it will also make it infinite (not completely, just hundreds of IRL years to travel from server to server [obviously this couldn't happen, but for programming reasons, you will enter the server's space when you enter their "near space”). Ships that are on different servers or SSP worlds and are in the deep space region will be unable to see each other, or interact in any way AS THEY DON"T EXIST ON THAT WORLD.
What I was trying to explain in my wall of text up there was I was basically suggesting that we add a block that sends out a redstone signal when any side of it is in contact with space. There would be many uses, but the one I thought of on the top of my head was an automatic breach containment system of just connecting the detector to redstone and pistons to seal the compartments. If you needed to get into the room to fix the holes, you could either maunally disengage the pistons some how, you could repair it from outside the ship, or you could just break into the room when you were sure that the space was sealed and wouldn't spread further.
If your ship was leaking air, you wouldn't really care if it took a little longer to fix as long as the areas were sealed.
Important rooms that you might need to enter even if they are filled with space could have air-lock hallways so that you can still get in to retrieve weapons or escape pods. The thing you would want to prevent at all costs is having a single hole in the ship making half the ship both uninhabitable and inaccessible.
2 things I've gotta say.
1. SAD STORY :sad.gif:
2. Get the zeppelin mod when (and if) its updated. You actually make the shape of your vehicle, then put the controller (im not sure if thats where you got the idea) and the whole thing flies!

It would probably be better if the space detector block emitted a redstone signal, except for when there is space. That way instead of having complicated redstone being built into the walls that could fail, you could simply place the space detector block into the wall next to the door. The doors would have to remain open during normal times, but once the space detector block detects space in either room, the door would shut.
To prevent having to use ventilation ducts throughout the ship, you could make it so that you put an air cylinder into the space detector block and it would automatically start pumping air out of whatever side is exposed to space.
Another thought; Send a sattelite into space. A space station (or one on the ground) would recieve the signal, then you could remotely activate the orbit function.
A satellite would be good, could be used as an inter server comm-boue where one can send a message to someone or another comm station in a different server.
Or the satellite could be a weapons platform for ground war ( links to my idea below)
Each server has a single spawn point at first, where everyone on that one server will spawn and build and grow, but after a while if someone decides to leave the community and make their own then they can make their own "server spawn" (server - 192.168.1.10.x = x is the new spawn, 0 is homespawn) and with these communities, wars can ensue to "dominate the server" thats where the platforms come in, so they can launch it into the atmosphere and launch their payload at a location when the signal is given.( signal could be a laser guide, which was an idea before but promptly declined from ship bombardment, but for this, it could be a good idea. Sir, you may be able to blow up the world twenty times over, but I... I know the physics to tear this universe apart in a heartbeat. I think I win this argument.
first of how about no blocks at all? because you sitting in your piloting chair and it would be hard to check all these blocks constantly-so how about a helmet that is connected to the ship that has a HUD that warns you about anything ie
Simon and Lewis(in cruiser):: O MFG its Israphel in his Dreadnought
(Israphel fires Ion cannon)
HUD says:: *WARNING* hull breach detected in=crgo hold *Warning* airlock destroyed *Warning* remaining air 80%...70%... *please eject*
Lewis:: RUN SIMON!!!!!
Simon(already in escape pod)::huurry Lewis
Israphel::
ive got you now yogscast!!!!
(Simon launcches escape pod but flies into Israphel's cabin!)
HUD:: *Ownage detected*
Israphel doesn't talk he just shoots arrows at you
robot idea: sentry/sentinel mech: A sentry/sentinel mech is a humanoid mech that santries and sentinels can pilot, just put one in your hand and right click the mech. The sentry or sentinel can still shoot lasers but it has hands and feet, allowing to do things like pilot machines and activate machines.
-gigamettalix
P.S. I'll post the sentinel add-ons as soon as possible...
EPIC.
I'm personally a Trekkie. This would be great for me. I could build scale models of the Enterprise and crap, and fly it too.
Anyway, one small problem: You can't build a block on air, so how in the WORLD will you start building in space if it's plain empty? There needs to be a space station or something that is generated at the start as a base for all the stuff.
Idea: Turrets
Can be mounted on ships, and can rotate but cannot move from the place it is mounted on. I would suggest a "Hinge" block that the turret can stand on. The hinge block, when someone is at the turret control panel and presses [key] or [key], can rotate the turret left or right. Pressing [key] while at the Turret Control Panel will fire a shot out of all of the Cannon blocks on the turret. More on the hinge block: The hinge block will only move objects that it is connected to AND ARE ON TOP OF IT. The hinge block's top side should face toward the player that placed it - similar to furnaces, but the TOP SIDE - not the front side. This does mean the turret will need a "floor" that stands on the hinge. The hinge would preferably be in the middle of the "floor" (to rotate the turret correctly).
Turret Control Panel block: When a player is standing within 2 blocks of it (in any direction except for up and down), they can press [key] or [key] to rotate the turret and [key] to fire all Cannon blocks on the turret (connected to the hinge).
Cannon block: Comes in various types (phaser, laser, plasma, etc. stuff like that). This is the turret's weapon. When [key] is pressed by someone who is at the Turret Control Panel, all of these blocks will fire one shot of [insert weapon here].
Idea: Keep the phasers original.
This is something I'd like to see in this mod that almost nobody else has ever done in a phaser mod. Keep them original - I believe the people who developed Star Trek had the first idea of phasers. In Star Trek, phasers, when fired, were a straight line of energy going from Point A (Phaser cannon/launcher) to Point B (Target). If there was no target, they'd just go on for a very long distance. I'd like this distance, in the mod, to be something like 100 blocks (that's not too far. Shouldn't cause lag or anything).
Idea: Weapon "effects" on blocks
Each ship should have a "Shield" value, right? I think that once this shield value has reached 0 (due to weapon fire from other ships), weapons should start dealing damage to blocks, then blowing them up. Starting at a very low amount (20 damage to block hit per shot for the highest damaging weapon, excluding superlasers or stuff like torpedoes. Superlasers and stuff would blow up blocks in a radius when the shield value is 0, no matter what. Torpedoes would blow up a smaller radius, and would not affect shields greatly), and increasing as the ship integrity value goes down (due to more weapon hits - did I mention I would like to see a ship integrity value, too?).
That's pretty much it. I have little experience with java, but I can code. If you want me to, I can help with this (But I know you'll probably reject this request and I don't mind that at all).
Edit: I forgot to mention - I'm really psyched about this mod. Finally, a good mod request! I love space stuff. ... [portal 2 space core mode activated] SPAAACE! I'm in space! Space! I'm in SPAAAAAAACEEEEE! [portal 2 space core mode deactivated] Oh, another idea I forgot to add in my gigantic wall of text:
I'd like the moving of ships and turrets to be smooth - like in the Zeppelin mod. I know this does cause lots of stuff to not function, but I can come up with ways to fix that if I find out why it's not working.
A satellite would be good, could be used as an inter server comm-boue where one can send a message to someone or another comm station in a different server.
