( I apologise in advance for odd words being in the middle of sentences, I am writing this on an iPhone and autocorrect is known to cause such things to happen )
Anway, to business.
Greetings to all potential moders out there! I have thought up an idea for a mod which, if executed properly, will possibly be the greatest (but hopefully not the hardest) mod ever. If it is successful enough Notch might even add the main idea of this mod to Minecraft.
By know you are ( hopefully ) wondering what could possibly be so good, and not falling asleep or closing the tab. So I shall tell you:
This mod has three main parts to it:
- Firstly, a way to travel between servers, while still keeping your inventory. It would also allow other entities ( including spaceships ) to travel, allowing for trade, alliances, colonies, and wars.
I will post the rest tomorrow morning (EST) ( just incase anyone ( at all ) is watching)
Already in the works. CHeck out the bukkit mods and plugins sometime.
omfgthisissoooossumiwantthisrightnow this. is. ossum. just ossum. i could make a texpack, i think i alrdy have done one (workin on it) http://crafttrek.wordpress.com its based on a painterly pack with tons of modifications.
Okay, this could work, I was thinking textures more from Stargate, the base idea will definitely work, but several changes would have to be made. Thanks for the offer, and good work! ( Do you have any images which I can see, it's hard to find out information on a texture pack with out being able to see the textures )
Bravo, bravo! I wish this mod were already available. Instead of portals between servers (do exist), have massive spacecraft and some sort of nav-map to get you where you want to go! Add in a new ore (uranium or such for nuclear reactor) r solar panels or fusion reactors and some way to get He3, allowing there to be a limit on how far a ship can travel before needing refuel, and presto! Orbital bombardments, air strikes (can already do that, planes mod)... man, call it the Starship Troopers mod. (screw the movie, talking about the book)
Edit: Ideas for Spacecraft classes.
Freighters for ammunition, goods-carrying services, can be refitted to be troop transports
Fighters... duh.
Landing Craft: Big enough to carry... what, 8 people?
Frigate: Smallest warship, fast, long range, little firepower.
Cruiser: Midsize mainline warship, medium speed, long range, good firepower.
BattleCruiser: Larger, but not as big as a BB, slower, mid-range, great firepower...
Battleship/Dreadnought: Second-largest, slow, short-range, immense firepower...
Superdreadnought: It'll take a whole clan four days IRL to build one properly - shortest refuel-range, can crack planet crust.
Already in the works. CHeck out the bukkit mods and plugins sometime.
No plugin can close to this mod when done, plugins can only change existing features, not add completely new ones, while mods can, and do. If actual mods are swing developed for bukkit, then I say let them come, because this mod is bigger and acts as a total futuristic wraparound for Minecraft, affecting all areas of the game and ganeplay.

More ideas later!
It is a rare occurrence when someone can improve on my plans ( I planed out this mod for months in advance ), but it appears you have. It is a good thing you got me before I wrote the kinds of ships available, I will add the dreadonaught as a type of ship, as well as the frigate. The main difference between the ships is there size, but I suppose that I could have a difference in firepower that each ships could support. I will explain the energy supply for the ships ( the main one is from Stargate, but I think that nuclear fusion is also a good idea ) ; and the travel through space to different servers ( two ways; stargates and hyperspace ) in the main post ( no need to write my ideas twice ).
I am already building an ship, called the "Alteran". Drawing a box around it shows that it takes up about 400,000 blocks of space. Today I had a Minecraft meet with some friends ( this is the reason I didn't respond quicker ) , we built a frigate, like you said; with several cannon blocks from SDK's mod. I hope that these ships will one day be able to fly.
My main point about the warship sizes was to differentiate better between size classes, instead of just "cruiser" to "mother" ship. Ships within a certain size range are x and require y amount of propulsion and thus z amount of power/fuel to move x2 distance within the connectorverse (i.e., hyperspace, realspace).
That also serves to dictate the amount of sheer industrial power required to build each construction. A frigate almost any decent clan could put together and supply, but a super/dreadnought only the largest clans or best-connected alliances could afford. The reason for my fusion suggestion and such is to add an element of realism to it - giving the freighters a tanker role, requiring support for any long-range strike mission, just like a carrier taskgroup needs a fleet train to handle its' duties.
That would also allow there to be different size-classes of weapons, but that's not precisely necessary... you can confine how many/how powerful a ship can carry just by dictating a limit on the number/size of power cores available. I would say, however, to add missiles into the suggestion - as any conflict in space would likely take place at ranges which would make energy weapons inefficient, to say the least.
I, additionally, had another idea. Find a way to turn the entire cloudlimit into an enormous portal.
Why do this? It provides the "space boundary" and could perhaps integrate some sort of physics that makes it so that any ship above, say, frigate size would lack the power to boost its' mass out of the atmosphere. Instead of needing a ground-based portal, you simply build yourself into the heavens (preferably with a way to get down). Additionally, it allows you to create space elevators to supply your orbiting fleet efficiently and effortlessly... However, that's simply an idea that buzzed around in my head last night.
What are your thoughts on Ori-style Supergates?
Oh, and I volunteer for tester, and working on a banner right now.
Edit: I have a banner now. The stupid board won't let me post it, though. Look in my signature.

Yes, very good ideas. How I was planning to do the travel between worlds is complex, and I will explain it in the main post. (Although not as complex as my idea for Minecraft time travel). The idea of the "space boundary" was what I had in mind, although I did not think about having some ships unable to leave the atmosphere unless carried. What I original was thinking was to go directly from in the atmosphere to hyper space, but I realize that normal space should be added, to allow for:
1- Infinite (empty) building space for ships and buildings
2- A place for large groups of ships to assemble before heading into hyper-space
3- Great views of Minecraft worlds (a view of the world you are currently orbiting might be hard to code/design)
4- Possible 0-gravity (although this wouldn't be on spaceships)
As for space elevators? They are an interesting idea. I am assuming that it disappear once it reaches the top of the world and reappear at the "bottom" of space (i.e. as close to the world as you can be without starting to re-enter)
I was planning to have two main ways to travel between severs (worlds)
- Through a stargate (this includes supergates for large entities, such as ships)
- Through hyper space (this is for the first time you travel to another world and don't have a working supergate or stargate)
The banner needs to be on the internet, if it is give me the URL so I can add it to my signature. If it’s not, then create a web page using a HTML editor, and just put the image on it. (I think that's how banners work)

And perhaps it wouldn't be hard to code. After all, there are a number of fantastic map generators - perhaps take an "aerial" of the current world and simply paste the picture over a default orb? And then presto.
The space boundary would have a counterpart, of course - when attempting to transition from space to atmosphere, you would have to cross the "atmosphere boundary". Perhaps code a size-check so that on re-entry, the server/system knows "you're too large" or "Coming in too fast" and bounces you back into space, preventing some future joker from landing his alliance's dreadnought on a planet and power-conquering.

Thank you soooooo much for the banner! I will put in my signature right away!
The idea for the orbital view should work, although if the explored area of the world is an odd shape (like most are), it might be hard to super-impose over a sphere. I think there are three ways to solve this:
1- Crop the world so that it is a shape that can be layered over a sphere
2- Use a generic Minecraft world for every planet
3- Use a randomly generated orbital view for every planet
To prevent people driving off with spaceships and declaring war on other servers, I thought of several things:
1- Only an op or admin can pilot large vessels (Anything bigger than a cargo ship), so normal players can only use escape pods, fighters, landing ships, frigates, cargo ships and diplomatic ships; nothing that poses any threat. This is similar to how Ori mother ships need a prior to fly them (remember the control chair?)
2- Like you said, some ships must be built in space and must stay in space, so you can't come in and land your dreadnought in the middle of someone's castle, crushing it flat in the process.
3- Most ships require more than one person to pilot.

Indeed. For number 2, that was how I was figuring to keep such vessels in space - with a size-check. If you're in the "cruiser" or above size-range, you can't enter atmosphere.
But then consider the consequences to powerful single individuals. If I, Mrs. Wannabe Gates, feel that I need a cruiser-sized space-yacht, and have one built, but cannot fly it, I might get... angry. And you can't have a bunch of ops running around... so I think number three would be the best flying-option for large vehicles. You'd need a captain, an engineer, and a weapons officer. (at least) And larger ships require larger crews - a Dreadnought, for instance, would require six people to make run.
As to the orbital view, option 1 or 2 would probably be simplest to code.

My signature doesn't appear to be working...
Use this one, without the / in front of the first "URL" and the \ in front of the IMG. Should work.
[/URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/694/bannersketchk.png/][IMG\]http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/418/bannersketchk.png[/IMG][/URL]
Not working right, says that it doesn't allow image extension.
Put it in your signature thing exactly like this:
[URL\=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/694/bannersketchk.png/][IMG\]http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/418/bannersketchk.png[/IMG][/URL]
just remove the \ after the first URL and IMG tag so that they look like [URL and [IMG].
Well, okay. Either way, I'll put what consumable energy is in the main post momentarily
[URL\=http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/400606-futurecraft-command-your-fleet-originaly-galactic-travel/page__gopid__5751627#entry5751627][IMG\]http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/418/bannersketchk.png[/IMG][/URL]
Just remember to take the \ off the first URL and IMG tags.
Right, let's see if this works...
No, sorry it doesn't. It comes up with this error:
[#10211] You may only use up to 1 urls in your signature.
