I accept the fact that hundreds of 'WOLF IDEAS!' topics have spawned here in this subforum for the past few days, but thought I'd let you know of some more that could be added anyways ;P
I'll keep this short and to the point, for those experienced modders looking for a task ;
Feel free to code any one of these, or - well - just leave the list alone.
- Color / Size Variations (Perhaps the most common idea) : It'd be nice to find a large black wolf, or a snow-white arctic wolf -- maybe even a rare cave wolf, with glowing purple eyes. Imagine finding one on a SMP server too - you'de be 'that crazy explorer guy' who has an epic wolf. Unique wolves would be much rarer than regular wolves too, and each would have its own unique attributes. For example - a large, black wolf would have much more HP, and a cave wolf would hit much harder than any other wolf. (I'm thinking more of 'breeds' than 'color variations' for those wondering)
- Legit Collars + Names : Players, by crafting a ring of leather, would be given a collar. Feeding a wolf bones will get it to 'like you', but not tame it ; a single heart will appear above it's head at the moment it first 'likes' you, and it'll follow you around for a short amount of time -- all until you right-click it with a collar and tame it.
When the player first places the collar on a wolf, a text-box appears allowing him to name it (Wolfy, Max, Rex ; whatever) - these names appear above the wolf's head, like the guinea pig mod from 'More Creeps and Weirdos', and are visible on SMP.
This would help players tell wolf from wolf, and which one belongs to who. Collars, I suppose, could be color-customizeable.
- Hostile Wolves : I was first expecting wild wolves to be hostile at night, but was disappointed when I found that they weren't - A simple addition / not much to explain. Like many have suggested, wild wolves (or tamed ones) could howl when the moon first rises - something that would enhance the minecraft experience even more.
- Pack Leaders : The black wolves I was talking about earlier could spawn as 'Pack Leaders' that other wild wolves follow. (Not so sure about that though). Pack leaders would be feirce, and difficult to take down.
- Stick Retreiving and/or Frisbees : Not much to explain here either : Right clicking with a stick in hand will, like the chicken egg, cause it to launch. Your wolf will run after the stick, pick it up, and return to its master and sit (unless the master walks away, in which case it'll stand back up and follow you). Right clicking a wolf with a stick in its mouth will retreive the stick, and make it stand up. Frisbees of some sort could be a nice addition too
- Early Creeper Warn : (suggested by mr01sam) Wolves, with as few abilities as they currently have, could growl (or bark) when a creeper enters within a range of 15-30 blocks to warn the player in advance (of its explosive goodness ;D).
- Bones to Pork : Feeding a wolf bones just doesn't seem right : raw pork or something would be the ideal taming food. Expanding on what I said before, giving a wolf pork will make it 'like' you faster than bones will - though the collar should still be used to tame.
- Wolf Commands : (Very complex - not likely to be added) By typing commands like '/Rex dig', '/Rex find 264', '/Rex kill Phanes', '/Rex Sit', '/Rex Goodboy!', '/Rex Bad!', players would be given the opportunity to perform a variety of actions with their pet wolves. I think you'll get the gist of what I'm saying
- Wolf Training : (Not so sure about this one though) An expansion on the 'color variations' I was talking about earlier : to keep it short and to the point - the longer you have your wolf, and the more combat experience it earns, the bigger and fiercer it looks. It's like training a pokemon or something - 'Mr.Guy20310' would have a gigantic, feirce looking cave wolf, while Phanes, the newbie on the server, would have two, weak, default wolves.

I'm not checking up on this topic, or the forums themselves either, so this topic is bound not to change.
I have a great solution. Wolves should bark when a creeper is near (like 10-15 blocks within range). Because people have been saying that creepers are too overpowered, this way wolves would also have more purpose. This would still make creepers scary because you may not always have a dog, you have little time to react, you don't know what direction its coming from, and you simply might not pay attention to him growling.
I like your ideas, although I'd honestly prefer multiple wolf breeds, each with different stats and attributes. This way, you could even add the ability to crossbreed them, just like the mo'creatures horses and dolphins. I can't be the only one who wants to see little viscous puppies.
Also, this is vitally important, have wolves howl at the moon!
ILOVE these idea's!! i really dont care for it now though... mostly cuz its a lot of work for something that dies in 5 seconds...... now, if you could make a dog house for it to respawn in id really like that... as it is, why bother.
however, if i know he'll be around then i'd LOVE to see all these mods...

Eh, I think you could use a little doggy bed to respawn. Assuming you have the option to name them, you could set each doggy bed for a specific dog.
If we have different breeds I still want the option to breed them, to breed the ultimate wolf.
Really awesome Idea man! One thing I wouldn't add is the /find command since that would unbalance the game. I have another Idea... Maybe the pack leader can sniff out mobs! The way this works is by getting lets say a wool block and right clicking the wool block on the pack leader. The pack leader takes 1-5 seconds before it recognizes the scent and it goes to work trying to find the animal. So if wool would = sheep...

wow thats a lot of ideas its kinda like the gunie pigs from more creeps and the fairy's from kodiachi exept both applied to wolves and then a whole bunch more i really hope somebody uses this mod idea

If you don't know how to make mods, then ask someone else to make this. Naming them would be great. And you should be able to dye leather for different collar colors!
