I have a decent computer, but no matter what, explosions = lag. I would like a mod that takes away all particle effects from everything - e.g. torches, lava, and especially other mods. If anyone has a few minutes to help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if there's an easy way to do it myself that DOESN'T require Java coding knowledge, let me know how and I'll be glad to do it myself and save you the trouble.
EDIT: Kinda figured out part of it, replaced particle.png in the minecraft.jar with a blank one, slightly less leag but still quite a bit.

My first map, Ubermob Arena! Endless hordes of mobs come to kill you and steal your diamonds! Sound like fun? Go here: viewtopic.php?f=1034&t=212665
An alternative is you can download and install the mod 'Optimine' which was made by Scaevolus, basically it is an FPS booster. It's also compatible with version 1.3_01. It can be found here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=132717
(I'm not saying it will get rid of the lag, it will help though)
Thirdly, as said before, (again...), you could change your texture pack. I recommend one texture pack for performance boosts, it does look quite plain though. Albeit, it can help with those lag issues during explosions. The one I recommend is SimpleCraft, which can be found here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=132717">viewtopic.php
All I can do, hope it helps slightly. (Sorry if you already knew all of that)
Edit:: Oops, it was a mod request, I thought it was needing help for boosting performance during explosions.
If you are having problems with framerate drops, you should turn down the rendering before blowing stuff up, and also this is a nifty program that shuts down background programs, and boosts game performance: http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html
I have an idea on lagging:
1st: Open Minecraft
2nd: Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and select Start Task Manager
3rd: Right-click Minecraft and click Go To Process
4th: Right-click the process selected and go down to Set Priority and select High
5th: This has been proven to work. I'm not sure how though.
