If Optifine isn't working when in the mods folders alongside your mods get either one for 'THAT' Minecraft version and put it into the mods folder or extract it if you have to (mostly recommend for 1.13/1.13.2 Rift modloader situations not likely Forge).
Get a 1.8.9 Optifine not ones from the top of the list:
Just remember that you need Optifine for "that Minecraft version", as you have a 1.8.9 setup you need an Optifine 1.8.9 download not a 1.14.4 I assume since that is the latest Minecraft version and Optifine you'd be seeing when appearing on the downloads page, so you need to find a legacy 1.8.9 Optifine on their download page here, just scroll down until you find that 1.8.9 ones like I did in this image here:
If the Optifine for 1.8.9 doesn't work in the mods folder on it's own there resort to this:
Install creates a profile so you can run Optifine alongside Vanilla. Extracting Optifine makes it into a mod so it can run alongside modded instances with Forge, Rift or Fabric. Just extract Optifine so it's a MOD.jar and put it into the mods folder (extracting into the mods folder is fine) and if it works it works.
If you having issues with your mods though then separate them into folders in your .minecraft/mods folder by just putting them into a 1.8.9 folder and say your 1.12.2 into a 1.12.2 folder.
Optifine 1.8.9 with scroll bar on purpose
