Hey everyone so i was wondering if someone could help me. I have forge installed and im trying to get mods working but when i start the game is loads with a screen that says for my mod to work i need mod versions forge 14.23.5.2768. i downloaded that version of forge but its not changing the forge version i already have :/ someone able to help ? thanks !
Could you start the game up until that screen appears then post the log from your launcher here (in a spoiler)? It would be odd for Forge to say that you need to download an updated version if you already have it.
My guess is your running the prior Forge since you haven't change it in the Launch Options (assuming your using the regular Minecraft Launcher and not a third party one like MultiMC). Go to Launch Options and select your Forge/Modded 1.12.2 profile. Change the Forge version, it should be before Release 1.0 if I remember like all Forge's do (unlike Forge 1.13.2, Rift or Fabric which appear above 1.13/1.14 snapshot versions of the game instead). Then save the changes and load up the game and see what happens.

Forge version change, ignore that it's Forge 1.13.2, was just quick to view
I've been trying to download and install java so I can run mods on minecraft for hours now, but it's not working. I've already installed forge as well, but it's still not working. I'm not really sure what to do since I'm not really good with stuff like this. I've been trying to watch tutorials on how to do it, but it's not helping.
Either way though I'll put it step by step like so.
1.Java - You download java pretty simply. I myself go for the '64bit offline' version since I'm used to local files being easier for it. You install it by running it/double clicking it and following the steps. Java is important but tricky. It can depend on your computer, many support 64bit these days, but some older computers use 32bit. If you know how much RAM your device came with you know what your after. You can tell how much from the 'search bar' in Windows 10 and go 'system information' then look for Physical RAM. If you have move than 4GB then you have 64bit, if you have less than 4GB you'd likely have 32bit and go with that java version. While Minecraft has it's own Java 'in a way' Forge and mods require Java properly to run compared to what Minecraft does with it's environment of Java.
2.Forge Downloading - Once you have Java setup after following the steps, you will install Forge by going to the correct, not fake, Forge site. Look for the Minecraft version you want to install Forge for though, since Minecraft having versions like 1.12 and 1.12.2 act differently. Forge/modded environments like this compared to other modded games is a bit deal. 1.12 and 1.12.2 are not the same thing and are two separate versions of the game, and can be two different modded versions of the game with completely different mods out for it.
Since this thread is about 1.12.2 I'll put the link for the 1.12.2 versions of Forge:
Unlike third party launchers (third party launchers download it safer and allow for more but I'll stick with the standard launcher for this example), you have to download Forge through an ad site. It's not as 'aggressive' or infamous as adfly, but Chrome 'the web browser' is known for being particular about this way of getting Forge from this site. So you might have to work out something on that. I know a video that solves this though.
Otherwise, click the skip ad button, download it and exit the ad site since it will download in the background and when it done downloading it will end up in your downloads folder/equivalent location.
3.Installing Forge - You install Forge by running it/double clicking it. You want to 'install to client', server is for server, extract is for other purposes I'm not sure of honestly.
Once it's 'installed' itself, go to 'versions' in your .Minecraft and a Forge version will be setup for you. Launch the Launcher. If Forge created a new profile. Run it and see what happens. If 3 Mods are loaded it was successful. If Forge didn't create a profile, go to Launch Options and create a new one. Forge versions appear below Release 1.0 for 'whatever' reason I don't know. Select the Forge version and click save to save the Forge. Then load up the game and check for '3' mod loaded.
4.Mod installing - Now that Forge is setup, add mods related to the version of Forge and Minecraft you have setup. if 1.12.2, only 1.12.2 mods work, if 1.7.10, 1.10, 1.10.2 or 1.13.2. They are all their own separate version no matter the .1, or .2. It's just the way it is.
Mods are best to be downloaded from:
minecraft.curseforge.com/mc-mods
Here is the 1.12.2 mod filtering to make it easier to tell:
Mod Repost sites exist though and their are hundreds and they are basically mod/community content stealers. Avoid them no matter the results in Google, Bing and other search engines. Curseforge is a Curse platform like the MCForums and are safe and the volume of content is great. Planetminecraft 'can' be but I'd avoid it due to the content creators redirecting to ad sites sometimes (not always but happens and it turns me away from their content rather than me caring to try it out, same with many other Modded Minecraft Players that are vocal about it) while Curse has none of that and it's less confusing to users so it's the best to recommend.
If all mods are successful (say only adding 1 to the mods folder in your .minecraft, it will say 4 mods loaded, you can also add folders for 1.12.2 to separate mods per version if you use many. Not a thing with 1.13.2 Forge but is with 1.12.2 and prior versions) when loading then yay, you have a modded environment setup to play! If not and you get a crash/crash report. Ask people that know about these. I myself know little about how to read them and am trying to understand little things over time. The common ones are E = Errored so search for that if mods conflict. If a mod needs a core/library/api, its best to get them. Twitch Launcher is a great third party launcher to download mods easily, but the standard launcher you have to manual download mods. Otherwise other crash reports can be awkward, so if you don't know get someone else to read it on the forums. Other disable/remove mods. Disabling mods is just renaming the mod. Like so: 'modname-1.12.2-1.2.3.jar.disabled' you put the .disabled after the .jar part of the file name. Twitch does the same thing and I've done it since when I test mods.
That about does it, if you need help or want a video to be recommended then... yeah. Hopefully this helped out and sorry it's long, wanted to get whatever details I could of course. I tried to word it as best I can and as typical as I know that a Java/Forge/Mod Install/Modded Minecraft setup is these days.

Thank you so much! I've been successful with everything up until mod installing. I checked what version my minecraft is, and in the bottom right corner of the title screen, it says v1.9.0. I'm not really sure what to do now. I've tried downloading the fairy lights mod multiple times. I've downloaded a version to fit 1.9.0 and just the latest download.
@theotherhannah Your welcome. Now the bottom left of the title screen is what your looking for, the Forge version number is fine to know and all but the other number is what your after. I will try to stick with 1.12.2 since this thread is related to 1.12.2 after all because I did in my above explanation. But it should say 1.12.2 in the bottom left corner of the title screen. So obviously you have Forge for 1.12.2 and you'd pick the 1.12.2 version of Fairly Lights. The latest isn't a bad thing usually but if you have difficulties ask the creator and put a crash report or go back a version and see what works. Just put mods into the mods folder (Forge either creates one or you might have to create one yourself if it didn't) as Fairy Lights doesn't need any cores/other requirements for it to work. If you do come across mods like that, that are cores, libraries or APIs. Put those in the mods folder too or else those mods won't work.
Check the files and check the dependency on the download page under the changelog section too if mods do require something to get them running. Your instance will tell you if you missing something sometimes but not always.
