Hello everyone. I was hoping someone can help me out. My son just got Minecraft for his PC last week. He has been playing on Xbox for a long time and has been wanting to use mods for a while so I finally started looking into it now that he has the PC version (1.12 i believe). I downloaded Forge 1.12 and everything worked great running a couple mods. The problem is that the majority of mods he wants are for 1.7. I went and downloaded 1.7 and it shows that as a new profile on the Minecraft launcher. As soon as you tried to run 1.7 the game crashes but Forge 1.12 profile works perfect.
I tried a few different versions of 1.7 with the same result so I know I'm doing something wrong. Do I have to actually have a 1.7 Minecraft game installed for the 1.7 Forge to work? If so, how do I downgrade the game back to 1.7? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks everyone!
Could you add some more information, like screenshots?
If you could add some crash info, that would be great.
You should also download 1.7 mods. 1.8, 1.9, 1.10 and 1.11 have small differences that does make it non cross-compatible. And some major versions (like 1.7.xx, and 1.8.x) also have small differences that can make them non cross-compatible.
Thanks for the reply. He didn't find many 1.12 mods he is interested in, he seems to like all the mods that say 1.7 so I downloaded a few and they dont work on the Forge 1.12 launcher profile. I then downloaded forge 1.7xx so that became another profile name 1.7xx forge. 1.12 Vanilla profile opens fine, 1.12 Forge profile launches fine too but the 1.7 Forge profile just crashes. I can take some screenshots this evening.
2 questions I can think of as of now are...
1) am I correct in thinking 1.7xx mods will not work with 1.12 Forge? Do I need forge 1.7xx to run 1.7xx mods?
2) If I do need to run Forge 1.7xx for 1.7xx mods... do I need to have the Vanilla MC I bought downgraded to 1.7 also?
Edit: I just saw a video that basically said to use 1.7xx Forge, you need to make that profile use MC version 1.7 and you do this by editing the profile and selecting version 1.7 and running the game once so the game actually downloads MC 1.7 Does that sound right? I never changed anything in the profile so I must be trying to open the 1.7xx Forge profile on MC version 1.12
Well I made a custom profile with 1.7 vanilla version and ran it once and it loaded. I then redid the 1.7 forge and added it to a profile also. When I try to run the 1.7 forge profile it still crashes. I even followed a youtube video to the T and theirs loaded fine... Ugh!!!!

That is correct

No, but you need to have installed the 1.7.xx files first. You can download them by launcing 1.7.xx in vanilla mode first.
You have to first download the files for 1.7.xx. Every single version make a folder that is used when you install Minecraft Forge, if you do not have the 1.7.xx folder forge won't load because it has no resources to load.
Note: Make sure to not have any mods for other versions in the mod folder.
Note: Make sure that the "xx" number is the same for all major versions.
Edit: Do what majestyc2k1 said, you can post the crash report by locating the log file. Run the forge 1.7.xx version, wait till it crashes. Go into "C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\logs" if you're using windows. Find "latest.txt" and copy the contents of the "txt" file.
Thanks to you both! I will post the crash report this evening. I did see the vanilla 1.7 folder that was created and a 1.7 forge folder as well but i DO still have the 1.12 mods in the mod folder. I guess that may be the whole problem LOL. I'll try taking the 1.12 mods out of the mod folder first and report back. Thanks again!

Post the crash report.
Are you also making separate Game Directory folders for each Profile?

Please make your own thread, there are plenty of Youtube tutorials on how to download mods.
Sorry I didn't update yet, had to work a double but i'll try again tonight, thanks all.
Taking the 1.12 out of the folder fixed everything, thanks everyone for their help !!!!
I'm glad I could help
