I just downloaded modloader and rei's minimap. Copied the files for 1.7.2 into a new folder, renamed each file to folder name, copied contents of mod into jar, edited profile to new folder name. I feel like i did everything right - but every time I click play, the game never loads. I noticed the jar file I made disappears every time I click play. This is the message i get on the log:
[22:11:03 INFO]: Attempting to download C:\Users\buy me\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\versions\Rei's minimap\Rei's minimap.jar for job 'Version & Libraries'... (try 1)

..... So I'm not sure what to do at this point. This is the only mod i plan on using so i would rather not download forge unless I have to.
Where did you get Rei's Minimap for 1.7.2 from? As far as I can find, the only official source for that is his Twitter account, which has a beta for 1.7.2, and it installs as a jar mod, not using modloader or Forge. The MCF Modlist mentions an unofficial port by Harry_baggs which is a Forge mod, but the link leads to the official forum thread for ReiFNSK's 1.6.2 version of the mod.
The method that I am attempting to mod my minecraft with is the same method i have always used. The only difference is that it's 2 years later and I'm using a different computer. I have always had to use modloader with rei's minimap. Is there another way you are suggesting that mods are now installed? Care to help me out with that? All of the guides I have used and am now using again follow the same directions.
That's a repost site, so it's not a trustworthy place to get mods from. Also, if you'd looked carefully at the linked modloader page, you'd notice it was for Minecraft up to version 1.4.5. According to http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1272333-risugamis-mods-updated it was updated to Minecraft 1.6.2, but not beyond. Mods for newer versions of Minecraft generally use Forge or sometimes LiteLoader, not modloader. There are some weird exceptions like Optifine that have their own installers.
The beta version for 1.7.2 from ReiFNSK's Twitter page indicates it should be manually added to the Minecraft jar, though that's rather tricky - certain launchers like MultiMC or Magic Launcher have special handling for jar mods to make it easier.
However, since that's only a beta, and there's no official full version of Rei's Minimap for 1.7.2 or newer, you might be better off with a different minimap mod. The only one I find for 1.7.2 is MapWriter. If you're willing to consider Minecraft 1.7.10 or newer instead, I suggest JourneyMap (though VoxelMap and Xaero's Minimap are alternatives)
I cannot play any newer versions other than 1.7.2 because of my graphics card.
Rei's minimap aside, I have tried zan's minimap as well and it does the exact same thing. I put all the files in the correct place, launch minecraft, and it never goes past play. When i go back to my .minecraft folder in versions, the jar file disappears.
It practically did everything for me, installed everything in the correct place and all i had to do was move the zan's minimap files into the jar file liteloader created for me and deleted the META-inf folder. Minimap is now working - All is well. Thanks for the tips.
How does your video card prevent you from using newer versions? My mother has a laptop with a Core i3-4005U igpu, and is still able to play 1.10.2 with PureBDCraft 64x textures, so the newer versions are hardly graphically intensive.
Also, that's another repost site (there are lots of them, which is why I use the plugin from the StopModReposts thread linked in my sig to help me avoid them), and Liteloader mods should not involve adding files to the jar or deleting meta-inf - the proper way to install a liteloader mod is to drop the litemod file in the "mods" folder. I recommend you download Liteloader from here instead: http://www.liteloader.com/download#old
Silly me. Sometimes I have trouble remembering that other players use hardware that obsolete. Intel 965 motherboard, huh? That would make it about 10 years old, right? I would not have guessed that could even run Windows 7, let alone Minecraft 1.7.2.

Zan's Minimap has been renamed to VoxelMap, but http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/2261180-voxelmap-1-10-1-9-4-1-8-9-1-7-10-1-6-4-a-minimap doesn't list a 1.7.2 version. There is one at http://www.planetminecraft.com/mod/zans-minimap/ which might be legit. I'm not 100% certain of that, though.
