I plan on creating a mod called "The Zombie Show" mod. It includes elements from original things, Mario, PvZ, Star Wars and other. I need coders to help me create this mod. I plan on creating this mod in 1.6.4. Tell me if you want to help or have any suggestions I don't have any modding experience so...
I have a lot of modding/programing experience so I have to ask whyyyy do you want to make it for 1.6.4? It does not make any sense! None will play with it because I think there is in total 2 active 1.6.4 player in the world and the 1.6.4 mc code is cringe worthy when compared to 1.8.9!
Well ok, that's your mod. But not much people will be able to help you with 1.6 because either they are like me and they started when 1.7 forge came out or they did mod in 1.6 and now they do not remember half of the stuff. Sooo yeah... I strongly recommend to switch to the newer versions.

Not doing mc modding that much anymore because I am making a full blown game that does not have limitations that mc has. (rip Magiology for now)
I may come back if MC fixes it's rendering pipeline.
Why 1.7.2? Most mods are on 1.7.10 at the moment, though a lot of mods are starting to update to 1.8.9.

Please don't PM me to ask for help or to join your mod development team. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future. I'm not interested in developing mods with people.

Wow.... I will stick to 1.8 first, seeing as I started modding on 1.8. Once I got it functional and the ways around it, will I then try to upgrade it. Is there any difference between 1.8 & 1.8.9?

They're fairly similar, except that 1.8.9 adds generics to vanilla code and a whole bunch of Forge features.
This is what I had to do to update from 1.8 to 1.8.8 (1.8.8 to 1.8.9 didn't require any code changes). Pretty much every change is just adding generics or removing unnecessary casts and @SuppressWarning("unchecked") annotations.
Some methods have been deprecated and replaced, like ModelBakery.addVariantName being replaced by ModelBakery.registerItemVariants.

1.8.9? That fast? I thought they were upgrading to 1.8....
There's not much point in updating to 1.8 now, since you'll just have to update to 1.8.9 later. You may as well do it all at once.
Plus 1.8.9 has all the shiny new features like generics in vanilla code, the capability system, IItemHandler, animated models and bucket models.

I actually plan on releasing development versions, the first one having some Koopas, Goombas and Roombas
