I know this is likely buried deep in the forums but perhaps there should be a sticky thread for noobs or those of us who have been messing around with vanilla MC for a while.
I have been playing around with vanilla Minecraft for a while now and I decided to finally play around with playing with some of the different MC mods. The problem is that there are several loaders out there and countless mods to play with. I think it would be nice if the more experienced players would be kind enough to offer advice on the best ways to delve into changing your MC experience.
For instance, I'm trying out the Technic launcher--installing it right now--but I know the original launcher supports mods--which is the "better" way to go?
I essentially looking for a good launchpad to allow me to understand how to enjoy some of the cool and strange mods without getting too frustrated and saying "fudge it" to modding my game. I am sure that this could also be helpful to many others as well.
Thank you guys ahead of time for any help you can offer.
The Technic Launcher, along with other third party launchers such as Feed the Beast and the ATLauncher, are meant to be launching points for pre-constructed modpacks. Simply start the launcher and pick your pack, no complicated installation method needed. Modpacks are probably the best choice to get you exposed to the variety of mods available, though the large selection of packs and the number of mods they involve can be overwhelming. I'd advise starting with an older pack such as Tekkit or Hexxit, both have fewer mods then most newer packs, clear and instructive wiki's, most of the mods used are fairly simple to understand and offer a good representation of mods in general. If your looking for something newer I'd suggest Resonant Rise 3 on the ATLauncher, not only does it have a wide selection of mods, including new versions of mods from Tekkit and Hexxit, but it comes with Hardcore Questing. Hardcore Questing adds in a guide book that modpack makers can use to create quests which are normally based around teaching the player how to use many of the mods. Do keep in mind however that RR3 is a much larger, heavier, and harder pack then the others I suggested and could be very frustrating.

The Curse Voice program includes a Minecraft launcher. It allows you to install mod packs but also easily make you own by picking and choosing what mods you want. Plus it will show when mods have been updated. The only thing it works best with mods that have been submitted to Curse. Its also still in Beta.

If you don't want to install forge and get mods manually, get the Technic launcher, and you also get Vanilla minecraft and you can install other modpacks.
