So, I want to install Forge for mods To make the game smoother Before I do, I would like to know some quick things about mods. All I have on my computer is the latest 1.8 launcher and Java. I already know how to download it, but before I download, I want to know if any of you use it for mods such as Optifine or Shaders and if it works fine. Another thing is if I accidentally do something wrong with the setup or anything if it'd cause any problems with other parts of the game or whatnot.
The other things are pretty straight forward though. So, if Minecraft has an update, all I need to do to prevent corrupting my worlds from mods is to run a profile with the next version of Minecraft, and wait for a new forge version to come out, without running that world if the world had changes to the games items and what not. I would then uninstall the old forge and use the new one right? And my final question is simply fair. If Minecraft has 1.8 on, then say 1.8.X is released, does it still work or do I need a new Forge version for compatibility?
Thanks, and sorry if there are too many questions. I just don't want to install this stuff without any problems occurring and me being unaware of them.
Then set up as many worlds as you need. I have for example a profile with the current latest snapshot in vanilla, few various forge modded profiles for different game versions and then i create new test profiles as needed when I want to try something new.
This is good practice cause if anything goes wrong with the files, you can just toss that particular profile's subfolder, delete the profile off the launcher list, and that's it.
As for optifine and shaders, for optifine you can have them in one of your profiles but I'm not entirely sure if shaders are per profile or if they're applied to all profiles/game versions. You'll have to read up on that when you're installing shaders.
Make sure you read first post for shaders as it'll tell you about compatibilities with graphic cards/drivers. Shaders are extremely graphic intensive so if you don't have a really good setup, don't bother with them.
If new versions of forge come out, you can just install the new forge while the launcher is shut off, then when you start it up, edit your current profile you want to update, and for game version select the new installed forge. Keep in mind that each optifine version is tested for certain forge version. Updating forge version past recommended by optifine author (if you're running optifine) is likely going to crash you.

Now, the launcher, allows you to create as many worlds as you want, and each can have different game version, different set of mods, or just be vanilla (unmodified). To take full advantage of this feature, read a guide like this:
