Supposedly official sources, but extremely outdated.
Absolutely BS "features" list.
VERY misleading installation instructions, telling people to use the old way of installing mods (modifying the jar files).
No word on whether there is any hostile software yet.
Even Vazkii herself said to avoid that site when it was called to her attention (someone was attempting to install Botania from that, using those instructions).
Unfortunately, there are people out there who don`t want to be honest so they can make money. They don`t know how much hard work goes into these mods. If the people are actual developers, ask them some basic programming knowledge like what is a variable. also ask them some basic info from the mod. This is also why I look for mods that have the developers name in the mods title. If you download off the minecraft forum, you can be guaranteed that the mod is posted by its developers. but you can`t get 100 percent of a guarantee if you don`t download from the devs website, it could be the wrong version and your computer will crash because the version was actually 1.2 and it was listed at 1.8.

I support heavy equipment 100 percent. When life gives you lemons, make floor cleaner and use artificial flavours to make lemonade.
I think the mods that are the "Biggest victims" of this issue are probably orespawn and lucky blocks.
There'd likely be any parents gullible enough to fall for this trap when their 11 year old with a low IQ starts crying about them installing mods for them. They then download the two mods off of the pseudo sites and fall for it. This happens alot until the pseudo-download owner gets truckloads of dosh.
i feel that it is necessary to mention that orespawn isn't quite the mod for kids, it is quite rage-inducing. but that is indeed true, parents are easily tricked by the internet.
Thank you for posting this. We need to spread the word. I know there's an armada of kids at my school who use a depressingly large number of the websites on the list. I personally know better, but I agree with Zbrainy that the main demographic using these types of websites is un-tech-savvy children and their even less tech-savvy parents. We need to post more information on legitimate modding websites such as this one, so we can help alleviate the losses that mod authors have from ripoff websites.
Quick question, how would mods put under copyleft licenses be handled under this campaign? Licenses such as the GNU GPL freely allow redistribution, but mods under that license also get 'stolen'.

I think in those cases we'd have to decide whether the mods are being distributed fairly. i.e they mustn't be making money off it or packaging malware with the mod.
So pretty much just like in any other case.

I'm not active on these forums, so forgive me if I don't respond!
If you want to contact me, try going through Discord or you can find me on GitHub where I am still updating the below mods (and more):
GPL allows for-profit distribution, the only requirement is that source must be available at no additional cost. However, packaging malware would constitute a derivative work, so unless the malware is licensed under the GPL (or a compatible license) and the full source is available they would be violating the GPL.

all those numbered sites... I bet they use the numbers to get around other websites with that name already. And I really hate the fact that people take other people's mods, stick malware in them and then say "download my mod! :D"
Is the malware downloaded when you browse or when you download the mod? I think I will get that blocking extension XD
i have browsed minecraft-forum before, it made me laugh at so hard they were trying to be this forum and that "-" XD :I
i have accidentally gone to minecraft-forums thinking its this forum! I defiantly need that extension XD
i don't use mods except for optifine, but I support you!
I applaud you, many people complain about issues like this but never actually do something about it... You look like you've done your research and you know lots about this! I am not personally a mod creator BUT I am a writer/author and although minecraft and books are two different things I get frustrated when people steal my ideas. Thank you for not just talking about how we are going to fix the problem, but actually starting to fix it. xxx -Birdy
i hate downloading mods from Copycat websites! i.e Decocraft is the most CPU intnsive mod! downloaded from illegal creator:my computer nearly blew up because ithey put garbage files there!
^ This one is not on the list however, and labeled as 1.8.
Well for the first site, you can try contacting the author to take down the mod. It works most of the time
The second site doesn't seem to be redistributing mods, so it's perfectly fine
trust me when i say if someone reposted my mod i would hire a hitman to...well... lets say END THEM
Found another site. http://www.minecraft-db.com/
Using this specific page as an example: http://www.minecraft-db.com/botania/

Hm, well it's hosting a bunch of mod installers. I don't know whether they are actually redistributing the mods though. Can someone confirm this?
minecraftresource actually links back to the original downloads (Curse & here), so it's not redistributing the mods.

Hello I'm you're friendly neighborhood Piggy! I'm not very active on the forums but when i'm on i like to help people and look at suggestions.
minecraft420blazeit.net when
.............mcf isnt gone???????????????
True on that, other part is that voidswrath modpacks are sorta... dead.
They broke their own packs due to the server updates removing donor abilities and java issues disallowing you to play at all.

Well, I see at least one mod reposted on that site, so I added it to the list.
Thanks for contributing!
