I'm trying to decide whether websites on the last page of Google should be on the list. I feel like the list can get a bit unorganized if we include sites like "repostsites.website.freewebsites.com/mods". Any input?

It was not on the last page of Google. I tried to search for my Minecraft Weebly site that I made, and that came up along with other mod repost sites. Also, the site did not give any images of the files, did not link to the original threads, did not give credit to the original creators, and the files are hosted on the site itself.
Heres a website that reposts mod but dont get permission from the authors to add it
Skydaz.com
I had a look and that site at least seems legit. In it's footer are visible two badges that claim the site to be secure, the first authority being sitelock.com and the second being seal.godaddy.com. Looking at one of the mods they have a link to the original topic, credit to the author, as well as a link to download it from the original thread.
The main feature on the site is that they provide automated installers for the mods, not the mods themselves. In addition to this they also provide a checksum hash alongside the download link for anyone who wishes to verify the validity of the file.
That said I still do not see anywhere that explicit permission was given by the modder to have their mod listed on this site which is something I think should be brought up with the maintainer of Skydaz.com

I've jotted down a few ideas I've had, and asked a few friends about it. Should I post them here, or should we set up another thread for the Modder's guild? Also, are we championing an existing distribution system, or are we going to create our own?
These are all good questions. If we discuss here, we'll already have an audience of people who might care, but we might annoy people who don't care. If we move to another thread, we won't annoy people who don't care, but might lose people who do care. Although, people who do care can just pay attention to the new thread. It's a tradeoff, but I think I might prefer a new thread.
Championing an existing system or not depends if there's an existing system that meets our needs. It depends on what's on that list you made. =)
One time I was installing a mod from a website that I wasn't really sure of, (and I mean this happened a few days ago), and my mac started blaring off about a trojan virus, which scared the crap out of me because I just bought this computer and got rid of the last one for the same reason. And I thought it would have been fine, because all I did was download a mod from project red, which led me to the site. I talked to the owner, and he said that he had been using a safe downloading site the whole time. It was very strange, but now I know that you have to be careful where you get your downloads.
You got rid of your computer because of a Trojan? Couldn't you have just gotten rid of the Trojan?

do you know that they wont manage to shutdown the site right?
i think the maximum they can do is like remove the mods as that site serves for way more than only minecraft
The only reason I can tolerate these sites is because I can find versions of dead mods for old versions where the author has either deleted the thread links or mediafire/github deleted the files.
This week I found a lot of the mods I was looking for for 1.2.5 and 1.4.7 that i couldn't find anywhere else.
A good way to fix this is to create a mod repository for all mods available in a central location where everyone can find them with ease. (I am aware that this is what curse is attempting)
I also came across a youtube channel that during a few days uploaded dozens and dozens of "mod reviews" (automated scripts?), and then they slapped the mod download behind adf.ly links. I only watched one video, which was a "review" of my mod. The video had an utterly crappy screenshot as the picture, and a speech synthesized audio that read more or less my description of the mod. And then the download link was behind TWO adf.ly links which lead to a 3rd party download site. Surprisingly though, at least the md5sum of the actual file matched that of the original, so it was probably at least free of malware that time.
I tried to report that video to youtube, but got a possibly automated reply a few days later and nothing came of it, I don't understand all that legal stuff and frankly I don't care to and don't want to deal with it. So that is another form of crap some people are doing with the work of other people. (the channel is this one: youtube /channel/UCcM0u7xoMCoJUrmgFBteCSw/videos)
Edit: obfuscate the url some more so that it hopefully doesn't get picked up by search engines.
there seems to be a youtuber with an average amount of subscribers who is reviewing mods and leaving the download links in the discription which lead to 9minecraft. here is the channel link: https://www.youtube.com/user/Thetruegingershadow. hope i helped

I think if you see any videos that do that just leave a comment or message the youtuber saying he shouldn't link to those sites. It's possible he just doesn't realise it's an illegal site.

I suppose I'll make a new thread. Hang on.
EDIT: new thread:

Feel free to migrate to that thread if you're interested in discussing how to work towards a better mod distribution system.
