I own and operate a Cauldron Pixelmon server and I have a question regarding modded clients. ATM, the only approved mods on my server are Pixelmon, Optifine, and Voxelmap. However, because I run a forge server, I am able to see what Forge mods people have installed when they login via the console. I see a lot of stuff going through my server and I question a lot of players and tell them to uninstall their mods. At what point am I being too overbearing?
I just banned two players for having the mods shown in the attached image and they denied they had them.
Should I have? Are these harmless? They claim it was part of a modpack and they didn't know how to install Pixelmon through technic without them. Are they cheating?
Are there any mods I should ignore? A lot of players have stuff like inventory tweaks and toomanyitems but my understanding is that these don't really work in SMP so I've been ignoring them. What should I do?
PS Those same two players kept using /we cui. Why would they do that???
Well, All But NotEnough Items And NBTEdit Can Be Ignored.
(Actually If Someone In My Server Were Using At Least 1 Of These 2 Even If Them Didn't Work, I Would Give Him A Ban For At Least 50 Years :º )
PSD: If They Denied And Said After That It Was A Part Of Modpack It's Because They Were Trying To Cheat On You :1
So I'm guessing NBTEdit lets them modify their stats and NotEnoughItems lets them get unlimited items then. Do you have any idea why they kept using /we cui? Can they worldedit my server without worldedit perms? Also I just caught guy using the /give command repeatedly and the console said he was denied access to command and I checked his mods and he had NotEnoughItems. So was the /give command working then for him?
If someone had Pixelmon, Optifine and VoxelMap. But they included something like Bibliocraft or another mod that isnt included in the server. It wont affect the server. The player will see the items/recipes in NotEnoughItems but they cannot be created or used. Most of these mods that are shown arent considered cheating unless you count inventory tweaks which lets you auto equip the best armor.
And as a side note the command "/we cui" is for WorldEditCui which provides a client-side user interface for the WorldEdit plugin allowing you to see your selected region in-game in real time. It allows you to work more quickly and accurately with your WorldEdit selection and is especially useful when working with Polygon, Convex Hull and Cylinder selections. So basically you shouldn't worry if anyone has extra mods because they don't effect the server
The /give command will not work unless the player is opped/admin or was given permission to. If WorldEdit is not installed into the server the player cannot use it.

Well, Seems That I Learnt Something New Today
If That It's What /we cui Does Seems That These Two Were Really Trying To Cheat :1
Ok but what about NBTEdit? I saw there were YouTube videos titled "How to cheat in SMP with NBTEdit". Also worldedit is installed on my server, but only ops have permissions to use it. And I really don't care if they autoequip armor since the focus of my server is not PVP. So should I just not worry about any mods then?
Also the two guys I banned were throwing flags with AntiCheat for "Fast Inventory Clicking: 50 times in 1 ms"
If they've got inventory tweaks that might happen but it's not really a cheat. Like if you open a chest, inv tweaks may sort it for you which is technically super fast to do manually but doesn't pander to anything but your desire for ordered chests. It could be considered a cheat since it lets you auto equip armor and tools when it breaks but that's really minor all in all unless you're having a pvp server with some sort of disarm being a significant tactic.
NBTEdit I'm not sure why they'd use for as it's more of a developer tool. In fact I think NEI uses the edits so it may have just come with NEI. Like with WorldEdit, I don't think NBTEdit allows you much of anything unless you give the user permissions.
Voxelmap is a minimap mod and you may consider it a cheat but it's really just a more useful presentation of Fn+F3. It gives you graphical display of what you already have available in vanilla game as text. Again it could be made for teleporting for example, if the user had OP permissions. Waila is a tooltip mod and the rest just seem like a part of his private modpack.
The fact is, what likely happened is the user did not create a separate profile and a separate folder for this multiplayer game so it's trying to load his default settings from whatever single player game he has into the multiplayer one. I'm a little surprised it's letting him log on at all to be honest, as if you have a mod mismatch with the server (other than exception mods that are about the UI like NEI, Voxelmap, Damage Indicators), it should automatically boot him off.
So should I unban the four players that I banned for having that modpack then? I feel bad because I thought they were playing dumb when in actuality they were just dumb.

I think you just reacted impulsively... which I would have done and have done too.... MY understanding with forge and bukkit (with my experience resiliency testing servers I run virtually) is that it doesn't matter what mods are installed client side...BukkitForge will allow any clients to connect regardless of the extra mods... idk why.. but it does... the only mods that will work are the ones installed on the server... the rest will just be ignored and will be useless.. NEI is used by most people just to find recipes.. I haven't experienced NBTEdit to work SMP and inv/mouse tweaks are just nice things to have... Keep in mind that a lot of the players are just young kids usually 8+yrs old and will try getting 'hack' clients which they really aren't hack clients or they don't know how to use anything but technic launcher and just use that for any modded servers...
In conclusion I would unban them until you find them exploiting anything or using hacks or the like
Thanks guys you've been a big help. Now the only one I have to worry about is Gameshark, and it shows up as [email protected] in the list of mods. It seems the developer has made it clear that he intends to make it impossible for server admins to detect. What a pain.
Because the [email protected] seems inconspicuous I'm reluctant to ban anyone that has it simply because what if its something else? I guess I'll have to find other ways to detect it.
Gameshark seems to be pixelmon specific and yes I can see how it could be considered a cheat since it gets a lot easier to locate the mobs when it's doing it automatically for you as it's loading chunks when you walk around then to have to search through the foliage and terrain to find it. The remembering part is no different than writing down its FnF3 coords on a piece of paper and then coming back to it later so that part's not really gamebreaking. If you don't like the function of the first portion of the mod though, you can ban the player that runs it.
If you ever played wow, this mod is a Minecraft version of NPCScan.
I unbanned those players I originally mentioned and they are back on my server and continue to do /we cui all the time. I have we on my server but I don't have we cui. Its obviously doing something for them. I'd like to know what.
I might quickly code a custom plugin that kicks anyone that uses that command with the message "you don't need to use that command." Lol

Maybe They Know How To Bypass The Lock Or Maybe They Are Just Retarded :1
Anyways It's A Good Idea To Do That Plugin -I Would Add A /Kill PlayerName After The Message -

Can you see in the console logs what it is doing? Like is it registering blocks breaking...? I could create a quick little mod for you that logs all block breaks in the world to the console if you would like?
Lol I could do that to but it would make the console unusable if you had more than 10 people online lol
AntiCheat should register fast or excessive block breaks I would think
I just coded a plugin that kicks anyone that uses it from my cellphone using Chrome Remote Desktop to my laptop and MCMyAdmin mobile. Lol I'm at work
but while it may make a pretty structure that only they can see with the light lines, unless you enable them, they shouldn't be able to do anything with it. Are you seeing them actually complete any worldedit basic commands? Like replace or add etc? Have you configured your worldedit to not function for anyone but the administrator?
I never see any other commands being used by them when I moniter the console. At one point they were killing each other and every time they died they would do it again. Is it possible they are able to use the command for highlighting other things on the map like the terrain or caves? Maybe they hacked and configured it somehow? I can't think of any other use it might have.
I wish I knew what modpack they had so I could download it and try it out myself.
