So I was thinking with the release of 1.8 I should come back and check things out.
Now I didn't expect for forge or mcpc+ or bukkit to be updated yet... but I did think there might be some sort of progress report. I see that various projects have completely closed down? What has happened. o.o
With these projects just sort of gone, what does that mean for using mods server side? If I still can, where should I start? What version of what should I be looking into?

The only real project that has shut down (if you can call that, it's all up in the air, they're saying they've quit, but Mojang and members within Mojang are saying the opposite) is Bukkit. Forge, and all the rest, is still going strong.
In terms of a replacement for Bukkit, try Sponge, it's a server-side modding API I've been hearing about quite a bit recently.
Cauldron is just the new name for MCPC+, so it's gone along with bukkit, and all of it's derivatives, like spigot.
A new server modding API, designed from the ground up to work in concert with Forge (unlike Cauldron), is in the works for 1.8 and maybe 1.7.10: Sponge. Still a ways off.
@Ayria
If you want real progress updates (and not just glorified guesswork), go stalk SeargeDP or LexManos twitters, like everybody else.
That's what I meant, Sponge, not Bukkit! Sorry for the mistake, I'll correct it now.

Ha, twitter.. I have one, but I don't really know who to follow or what anything means. Everything feels like hearing one side of a fragmented conversation. I'll follow them though and try to get use to twitter. Thanks for your replies. ^^
Latest news gathered from various Twitter and forum posts:
Forge 1.8 will be delayed. Probably till January.
So maybe if we want mods 1.8 is not going to be a viable option for a good while... 1.7.10 is probably going to be my best option then? In your opinion how are the options mod wise? Plenty of people updating to it?
