My son plays Minecraft on our PC. We just installed 1.7.10 a few months ago. Since then I have followed tutorials on installing several mods. everything has worked fine until last weekend. He noticed his mods weren't there and his skin was a girl. Upon further inspetion the launcher shows 1.8 instead of the normal 1.7.10.
Did 1.8 just come out? How can he get his mods back??
When you open the launcher, click "Edit Profile" in the bottom left-hand corner. In the "User version:" menu, select "version 1.7.10". "Save profile" and then click Play. You do not have to do this every time.
Any installed mods are probably incompatible with 1.8, and one of the default skins is now a girl. Reverting back should fix these problems.
Well, I did what you suggested and it does launch 1.7.10 but there are no mods and no worlds. I'm not really sure what to do next. I do have a lot of the .jar files that I downloaded but I am not sure what to do with them. It took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to google/youtube and get these installed for him. All I've had to do on the last few was to drop the .jar file in the mod folder in side a minecraft folder. Got to it by %appdata% folder.
I did back up his "worlds". I foget where I read this but I did so. Still have the copy on the desktop.
Any other guess on what might have happened or what I can try next?
You need to be on the forge profile and then select "Edit Profile", then click versions and then change it to release 1.7.10, then save changes. I have tested this and I have found out for mac it works but not windows. For windows I think you might have to switch both versions to 1.7.10, but I have not tested this. Linux, I have no clue.
