I'm a Dad who grew up in the golden age of Dungeons and Dragons. My son is now 8 and plays Minecraft. He also wants to play Dungeons and Dragons. I figure that there should be someone out there who has mixed the two in the past. I don't play Minecraft and am not familiar with all the specific programs to load mods, etc, but I am a computer guy and not an idiot.
I've searched via Google on things like 'minecraft dungeons and dragons' to come up with some things, but I'm just not sure. I've also found HEXXIT and installed that. So, my son has that mod pack now. It's the only one I've dealt with.
I would LOVE to show him the old modules and adventures that I played as a kid. Things like Keep on the Borderlands or the Isle of Dread. I've looked for things like that online and found that maybe some people have made maps that match these. So....I am thinking that I can download the map and make it a local instance that my son can play? Or even make it a server and have his neighborhood friends to join in. Is that correct? I'm also assuming that there would be specific mod packs that people would need to install to make some of these maps work (if they used specific mod packs to build it -- see...I'm not a complete idiot!).
Minecraft is so huge, it's hard to find all the variants and things I need. I am hoping some experts out there might be able to help me. Maybe even someone who has already looked these things up?
What would be the best way to find these maps and such so that I could load them up for him?
What about mods? Which would be the best mods? It doesn't have to be one that has classes or spells or such, but I wouldn't necessarily say no to such a thing. It would be great to find a mod pack like the Tekkit one that has everything already loaded and easy to use in a .exe. Is the Hexxit one the best? Are there others? Recommendations?
I would REALLY appreciate some help. I've posted on the Hexxit forums and had over 100 views without a single post. PLEASE don't be one of those people that just reads this and doesn't post anything. If you have any bit of advice or suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. I know I'm a n00b, but we all have to start somewhere.
Off the top of my head I can suggest a few mods that would suit the Dungeons and Dragons premise you're shooting for.
Mine and Blade Battlegear 2: Adds things like shields, knives, and ability to dual wield to simulate equipment choices a few of the classes would ordinarily use.
Tinkers' Construct: Lets you make assorted goodies like hammers, scythes, hatchets, among others things that are all highly customizable (also compatible with Mine and Blade Battlegear 2 in some versions).
Lycanite's Mobs: Adds in a few various mobs like ghoul zombies, manticores, ettins, and trent/ents, among other things.
Grimoire of Gaia: Adds in assorted mobs like harpies, centaurs, nagas, spriggans, werecats, among other things.
Ruins: This generates structures randomly through the world based on templates. You can make your own custom templates (based on old d&d module dungeon maps or whatever else you want) for structures or even towns/cities if you feel frisky enough to build them as templates.
Better Dungeons 2: Adds some pretty neat default dungeons (you can make custom ones as well if memory serves me), and some cool items.
Ars Magica 2: Magic mod, lets you create customized spells and has its own leveling system for magi. Could be used to emulate wizard/cleric development.
Agriculture: Adds in new foods, and expands upon minecrafts farming/cooking aspect.
Pam's Harvestcraft: Adds in new foods, items, and expands upon minecrafts farming/cooking aspect.
Small Boats: Adds in actual "boat" boats.
Goblins and Giants: Adds in giants, vampires, goblins, and dwarves among other things as well as a new dimension.
Project Zulu: Adds in Minotaurs, mimics, haunted armor, and mummys among other things.
Better Archery: Expands upon bow usage and archery for minecraft (for ranger types).
This isn't really a comprehensive list of things that would in my opinion work, but should at least give you a few ideas to get started out.

This honestly depends on how in depth you want to get about it. And is highly dependent on how much free time you have.
If you're looking to re-create specific D&D modules, you can either spend time in creating them in Minecraft as you see fit, and then using one of the multiple Mob mods to add in the desired creatures, or you could try to find a map that re-creates it, as you suggested.
As far as Mob mods go, BanditKeith gave some of the better suggestions as far as D&D creatures go; Mo' Creatures is one that could add ambient creatures, Lycanite's is extremely good for this, Grimoire of Gaia is good as well. Custom NPCs is one that I would not pass up on, however, especially if you're looking to re-create the module entirely. You can add custom quests, dialogues, factions, etc with it.
I would definitely suggest getting a server set up for this, as you can actually act as the DM in that case, with your kid and the rest of his friends as the adventurers.
Other than that, my best suggestion would be to simply browse through the pages in the Released and WIP Mods section, and look for things that spark an interest.
If you want to make a old time feel of playing on a board in dungeons and dragons you could always just use minecraft as a board for dnd. Give the old time feel of giveing time to make choices and the board would be same way besides everything would be like blocks. You could also decorate the board as much as you want or how ever you need for one specific dungeons run or what ever kind of quest the day calls for. Also since it in world of minecraft people can goof off with blocks when it not thier turn outside the board area and still have fun so it could work. Me and my friends play tabletop style dnd on my server and we have a blast with it and best part is we set it up way that we all like it so we feel connected with the surrounding of the board and it is fun to see the map for once which is easy to make on a wall or somthing. We use a honest system with dice and put or charater sheets in front of the computer. It not the same as being in person and all but it is still a lot of fun and I hopeing you would think about using old stlye dnd board to play tabletop dungeons and dragons.

I am actually surprised there are no dnd mods that add the dnd dragons into the game.
Have you tried minecraft dungeons?
it’s a fun dungeon crawler 10+ though
good substitute and I have made a dnd campaign set in the minecraft dungeons universe
try ice and fire mod it add like dragons and other monsters that all have drops and special weapons
