Hi! My son just got his computer and installed Minecraft 1.6.2 version.
We are using Windows 8
He really wants the mod where you build water portal that goes to heaven and you can walk on clouds.
We thought that was aether 2 so we attempted to dl it and it turned out to be aether 2 resource pack which just changes textures in the game.
I used 7zip and forget how I got it to work or show up in resource packs.
I got help with geek squad Sat night trying to figure out how to get aether 2 after installing the aether.rar file and not knowing where to go after extracting the file and it was .minecraft with a bunch of folders inside..
I let him know that the .minecraft folder was the same as the aether.rar file. He used the .minecraft folder t try to first dl forge the player api and last player render api Minecraft just crashed because aether 2 is for an older version and not for 1.6.2.
We need help finding some cool mods that work in 1.6.2 and step by step instructions. He is interested in Elemental Arrows Mod he saw on youtube top 5 mods for 1.6.2. I may have spelled it wrong there was no info or links provided.
I've tried watching youtube videos and it is hard for me to follow along. Also many claim at first the mod works for 1.6.2 and when you get to the end of the video they state it is for 1.5.2 or 1.5.1
One last thing. Since my .minecraft folder is from aether.rar shouldn't I delete it before trying to manipulate it and start fresh. How can I do that. I don't want it to effect his game. (I think I hit control key + R and type in %appdata% to bring up files so I can start with a fresh .minecraft that has a mods folder in it or create one) I have no previous gaming experience but with your help. I would like to teach my son so eventually he can install mods on his own and even learn how to create a few.
i can and if you want i can make an installer for the mod. but if you want a manual installation i can help him out.
so first things first tell me what mods you son wants and put him on this forum so i can teach him.
Hi, I'm a dad and I'm also trying to get my daughter some mods. Minecraft Forge seems like a solid way to do it, but I'm at a loss trying to find any mods that works with it.
PlanetMinecraft.com has a mods section, and then you can filter just the mods for 1.6.2. Most of them use forge. More than 100, to be a little more specific.

I think the easiest way for a new mod enthusiast to start is with Feed The Beast. They are a modding community that put together a launcher, and it will install all the mods for you. There are plenty of mods and they have all been configured to work together seamlessly. Just google "feed the beast" and you will be there in no time.
As a side note, it will install a different version of minecraft, specifically the 1.4.7 for the most popular packs, but very recently they got out new versions for 1.5.2, which you can obtain with a code that has been posted on their forums.
For kids, I would very much recommend the Direwolf20 packs, and also watch his lets play series in youtube that are very entertaining, child friendly and above all, very informative.
Alternatively, for a personalized installation, I can help by providing a list of mods (you'll have to download them) and my own config files, arranged for 1.5.2 with no ID conflicts (this took a lot of work )
Edit: As for Aether 2, which I think the OP is refferring to, it is still a WIP mod ( I strongly believe) so I don't think it is available yet.
Edit 3: 1.6.2 is a relatively new vesion of minecraft, so there's not many mods yet for it. In any case, take a look here: http://modlist.mcf.li/list/1.6/1.6.2.php
If a mod says it need "Forge compatible/required" there's a procedure you must do before installing the mods. Doing so is as easy as copying the zip or jar file you downloaded into a specific folder in your minecraft installation. No need to extract stuff.
if you go to www.skydaz.com they have installers for a lot of mods for every version of minecraft and one or two new installers are put on the site every day and its all safe and free.

Do not go to this website as they have installers for mods that are not allowed to be redistributed at explicit permission of the mod author. Therefore making them illegal.
However, for your predicament, I would also suggest Feed The Beast. You can find their website here: www.feed-the-beast.com. Click on "Download" at the top of the page then click on "Download exe" on the left hand side of the page. Once it's downloaded, you need to drag it to your desktop and run it. It will do everything else for you. Just select the mod pack you wish to play and play. Very simple! If you need more help, don't be afraid to send me a private message on these forums. I will be more than happy to help!
This is probably going to be very long... Don't let it intimidate you though, it is mostly just a bunch of file copying.. With a set of specific mods, a step by step tutorial can be written, and anything that is confusing should all make sense through practical application.
How to start with a fresh minecraft install:
Press Windows Key + R to open run dialogue.
Type %appdata% to open the folder.
Back up existing save files (optional)
Open .minecraft folder.
Copy the folder saves to a location of your choosing. These are the current worlds your son has already created.
Return to %appdata% and delete the .minecraft folder.
Run minecraft.exe. The game will re-download the game files and minecraft will have returned to 100% original.
Now to installing mods. I can tell you the basics of how it works here, but I you provide a list of mods that your son is interested in, we can give exact instructions. First you must understand that there are two types of mods, and the steps to install them are different.
Standalone Mods: These mods are installed directly into minecraft, and each one must be done manually. Third party software such as 7zip is required. Mod Loaders are included in this category. Aside from mod loaders, these are becoming less common. Mod Loader Dependent Mods: These mods are packaged with a “drag and drop” mentality, and are not manually installed. They require 1 standalone mod called a Mod Loader to be installed first, the most common/supported of which is called Forge. The mod loader dependent mods are simply placed into a folder called mods and the mod loader takes care of the rest.
Second, some mods may not be compatible, aka can't be used together, while others may require a small amount of simple text file editing to take care of any conflicts. I can't say anything further about compatibility without specific mods or testing, so we can delv deeper into that when it comes around.
Preparing minecraft for mod installation:
Start with a fresh minecraft install.
Start Minecraft and log in.
Click the Play button and wait for the game to start. It is downloading all the necessary files for minecraft 1.6.2.
Exit the game.
Prepare a profile for modding -
Open your .minecraft folder.
Open the versions folder. Here you will see a folder named 1.6.2
Copy the folder 1.6.2 and name it 1.6.2_modded.
Open the folder 1.6.2_modded and rename the files.
Rename 1.6.2.jar to 1.6.2_modded.jar.
Rename 1.6.2.json to 1.6.2_modded.json.
Press Windows Key + R and type notepad.
Drag the 1.6.2_modded.json file into the notepad window to edit.
Find the line "id": "1.6.2" at the very top, and replace with "id": "1.6.2_modded". Save the file and close notepad.
Start Minecraft again and login if necessary.
Click the New Profile button on the bottom left of the window.
Name the profile whatever you wish. I recommend 1.6.2_modded simply to coincide with the existing files.
There will be a box containing the text Use Latest Version. Click it. Find and select release 1.6.2_modded. Click Save Profile.
The bottom left will have a box labeled profiles. Select 1.6.2_modded. This is the profile you will use to play minecraft with mods. Exit Minecraft as you are now ready to install mods.
The basic principles of installing standalone mods:
Download the 1.6.2 compatible version from the mod authors thread. Generally they are packaged as .zip files.
Extract the files from the compressed (.zip) mod folder.
Open 1.6.2_modded.jar with 7zip.
Copy the extracted mod files into 1.6.2_modded.jar by dragging them into the 7zip window.
Delete the folder META-INF.
Close 7zip. The mod is installed.
NOTE: These are generic steps. The mod may have slightly more specific instructions. Again we can help you with that.
How to install mod loader dependent mods:
Install a modloader (most likely Forge, which now has an auto installer).
Download the 1.6.2 Forge compatible version from the mod authors thread. Generally they are packaged as .zip folders.
Place the .zip folder into .minecraft\mods.
The mod is installed.
That is it. If something doesn't make sense feel free to ask.
I followed the Aether II on facebook, and they do have a 1.6.2 version for it. And it's really easy to use!
Download this file (http://aether.craftnode.me/launcher/launcher-start.jar) and put it in a new folder called "Aether" in your C drive. just run the file and all your son needs to do is login. Then done! Whenever you want to run the Aether, just run this file again.
Another mom here who knows just enough Minecraft to set things up for her 8 yo son.
What is the best way to manage multiple 1.6 mods? (I used to use MultiMC, but they haven't updated to 1.6 yet.) For instance, my son wants to play the Star Wars mod one day, and Lord of the Rings another day. Putting them both in the mods folder results in Forge loading them both, and that can't be good.
I can't figure out how to have multiple, separate instances of minecraft 1.6.2, each with its own mods.

OK I am going to preface this with a bit of a warning, I have not tried to play minecraft like this, just a quick test to see if it works.
I am going to assume you alreday have requirements (eg Minecraft Forge) installed or at least know how to install them.
Go to the folder that the ".minecraft" directory is loacted
In windows press the windows key + R, type "%AppData%" (without the quotation marks) in the run dialog and press enter.
Sorry i do not no the location on mac.
Copy the entire ".minecraft" directory and call it something different eg ".minecraft-StarWars".
Install the StarWars mod normally inside the new ".minecraft-StarWars" folder.
Open up the normal Minecraft launcher.
Press "New Profile" in the bottom left corner.
Type in a profile name (eg "Star Wars Mod")
Press the checkbox for "Game Directory" and replace ".minecraft" with ".minecraft-StarWars" (or whatever you called it in step 2)
Select the Forge version required in the "use version" drop down box.
Hit save profile, select the new profile and play.
This should run minecraft from the location specified. You can then repete the process for the Lord of The Rings mod. You should then have 2 new profiles, one will start the star wars mod, the other the LOTR mod.
Like I said, I havn't personaly done this other than a quick 3 minute test.
Good luck and let us know how it goes
P.s. has the Mum from the original post solved her problem? If she still needs help please post back and I would be more than happy to help.

Step #2 didn't work -- I couldn't get Windows to allow me to make a copy of .minecraft. (I tried a couple of different ways, and there's something weird about the AppData folder, as well as the system not letting me start a folder name with a period.)
Instead, I was successful with the following:
0. Download the mod file.
1. Open the 1.6 launcher.
2. Click "New Profile"
3. Set the Profile Name (I used the name of the mod, in this case "Gravestone")
4. Check "Game Directory", and add the name of the mod to the end "\.minecraft_Gravestone"
5. Set "Use Version" to the latest Forge version. (Set to "Use Latest" if not using Forge).
6. Click "Save Profile"
7. Click "Play". This creates all the directories.
8. Close the minecraft window.
9. Copy the mod file to the \.minecraft_Gravestone\mods directory
10. Select the profile and click "Play". After Minecraft starts, click on "Mods" to verify the mod loaded ok.
Great that you got it working. To tell you the truth, I dont use windowd too often anymore so didnt realise that you cannot start a directory name with a period. My method should have in theory worked with any directory name (starting with a period just hides the folder on some operating systems)
The only real advantage to my way is that you wouldnt have had to redownload everytgin (I probably should have realised that the launcher would hqve redownloaded for you)
Glad you fot it all working though, and feel free to post any further questions. Most people are relativly polite and helpful.
