I was messing with the grass sound. I know it's quite simple - all I did was open the sound in Audacity, mess with it, replace it as a Vorbis Ogg with the same name, and set it to read-only - but when I opened Minecraft and did the correct action to elicit that sound, there was no sound. I did it to all six of the sounds of that type, and it just played silence when I punched grass. I tried with the sound3\step\grass# sounds too, and then I could just walk all around with no sound. Hmm, that rhymes...
You need to create a backup of your .minecraft
Then force update.
Then go in the resources folder and copy everything in it.
Finaly paste the stuff in the resources folder of your backup.
(To go in .minecraft you go in the start menu and type run and enter and type %appdata% and enter and there should be your .minecraft)

That's how you keep your defaults separate. I had done that.
Anyone else?
